Description

(No Model.)
J MILNE FUEL EGONOMIZBR.
No. 519,023. Patented May 1, 1894.
Y Yi/Zzwiaed/ 62W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MILNE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FUEL-ECONOMIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent NO. 519,023, dated May 1, 1894. Application filed February 26,1894. Serial No. 501,561- (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MILNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Fuel-Economizers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fuel economizers for steam boilers, and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for heating water preliminary to its being pumped into a boiler; further to so construct the device that it may be placed in the fines of boilers, and the heat and gases from passing through the uptakes into the chimney may be utilized for heating the water.
' In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1. is a sectional plan view of a set of boilers showing my improved heater in the uptake thereof; Fig. 2. a vertical section of same on the line 00. w. of Fig. 1; Fig. 3. a detail end view of one of the heaters.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A, designates the boilers, B, the fiues, and O the chimney thereof all of the usual well known construction.
In constructing my improved heater, I employ two steel drums D. D of a suitable di-. ameter and depth, and provide each drum in its head with a man hole G of the usual well known construction, so that access to the interior of ,said drum may be had when it is desired to clean it, or make repairs.
E. E. E designate tubes or pipes of a suitable length and diameter and have their ends expanded in suitable openings formed in the shells of the drumsD and D as shown plainly in Figs. 1 and 3. These tubes are placed at suitable distances apart and run the entire length of the drums and fora little less than their circumference, thus making a nest of pipes between which the heat and gases may freely passand to allow of a greater number of tubes being used, I prefer to bind them at their ends, and allow them to extend over a greater surface so as to present a greater heating space.
The letter F designates a supply pipe whlch leads from a suitable pump (not shown) and enters one head of the drum D, and the letter F designates the discharge pipe which leads from one head of the drum D, and enters the feed water pipes of the boilers.
I do not desire to confine myself to the precise construction herein shown and described as many minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as for instance, the drum may be made elliptical or rectangular in cross section, and the tubes, may be made spirally again the location of the heater, maybe changed from the fines, to the back boxes, or it may be attached to a small auxiliary boiler, for heating the feedwater where a great many boilers are used.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fuel economizer, the combination with a boiler and the tines thereof, a pair of drums D and D placed parallel one above the other in the fines B of said boiler, a manhole G for each drum located in the end thereof, a series of tubes having their upper and lower ends bent or curved thereby presenting a greater heating surface, a supply pipe F entering the lower drum D and discharge F leading from the upper drum D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
J OHN MILNE.
