Description

W. SCHEELE.
ADJUSTABLE DRAFT ATTACHMENT FOR PLUWS.
APPLICATION FILED 0CT.29, 1915.
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
OF CARSON CITY,
WILLIAM SCI-IEELE,
NEVADA.
ADJUSTABLE DRAFT ATTACHMENT FOR FLOWS.
Application filed October 29, 1915.
L7 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1. WILLIAM SOHEELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garson City, in thecounty of Ormsby and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Draft Attachments for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to draft attachments for plows having both vertical and lateral adjustment relative to the plow beam in order to modify the furrow vertically and laterally as may be desired; and the present invention consists in certain novel details in the construction of such a device, as will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow having my improvements embodied therein; Fig. 2- is a bottom plan view with the shank in section; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clevis and the adjustable attaching parts, and Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional view through the clevis in the plane of the adjusting holes.
1 represents the beam, 2 the shank, 3 the handles, and 4 the share of a plow, which may be of any suitable construction.
According to the present invention, the clevis 5 is employed not for transmitting draft to the plow, but for positioning the draft connections vertically and laterally with relation to the beam 1, and to these ends, the clevis has its loop 6 reduced in the longitudinal direction of the beam but extended laterally on both sides thereof, and thereby adapted to provide bearings for a vertically adjustable hanger 7 and a diagonal brace 8 employed for sustaining the hanger laterally. lhe hanger 7 has an eye 9 to receive and afford vertical as well as lateral support to a draft rod 10, which may be provided with any suitable clip or loop 11 to receive the double tree or other suitable appliance through which the animals are hitched to the plow. The brace 8 is likewise provided with an eye 12, through which the draft rod 10 passes, whereby said brace is adapted to relieve the hanger 7 from lateral strains, particularly in turning the plow as at the end of a furrow. To adapt the hanger 7 for lateral adjustment in the clevis 5, the latter is provided with a series of holes 13 to receive the pin 14 which holds the hanger in place, and in order that the hanger may be adjusted vertically at any one of the hori- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial no. 58,705.
zontally arranged positions, said hanger is provided with holes 15 to receive said pin 14. The holes 18 also serve to receive. the pin 16 which secures the diagonal brace 8, which may be shifted within desired limits in a lateral direction, occupying a position on either side of the hanger 7 as may be most advantageous for each particular adjustment. To thus adapt the diagonal brace 8 to assume different positions and also to compensate for vertical adjustment of the hanger 7, said diagonal brace is provided with a series of openings 17.
The draft rod 10 imparts its pull directly to the shank 2 of the plow, and in order to hold the draft rod up out of contact with the ground and afford convenient means for at tachment to an existing plow, the draft rod terminates in an eye 18 engaged by an eye bolt 19 introduced vertically through the plow beam 1, and also receiving a clip 20 which is securely anchored by plate 21 and nuts 22 at its rear end to the shank 2 of the low.
If desired, the hanger 7 may be fitted in the guide block 23, the jaws of which lie above and below the clevis 5 and have 0penings through which the hanger 7 extends; this guide block being adapted to slide laterally upon the clevis in the lateral adjust ment of the hanger. But with the improved means of laterally sustaining the hanger 7, namely through means of the diagonal brace 8, this guide block may be dispensed with, if desired.
To adjust the hanger, its securing pin 14; and the pin 16 which secured the brace, are both removed until the hanger is brought to the desired position, after which the pins are replaced in the appropriate openings and the hanger will thus rigidly position the draft rod 10. If it be desired to place the hanger at the left hand end of the clevis, the hanger will first be lowered sufliciently to entirely release the brace 8 from the clevis, and the brace will. then be swung downward and up on the opposite side of the hanger and introduced into the right hand end of the clevis, where it will be secured, after adjustment of the hanger, in the manner already described. The pins 1 and 16 and the holes in the front wall of the clevis made to receive them, will be suitably threaded so as to hold them in place, as by so doing, it will not be necessary to extend the pins through the rear wall of the clevis. Any
other means of securing the pins, however, may be employed if desired.
Obviously, to apply the new attachement to an existing plow, it Will merely be neces sary to bore the beam to receive the eye bolt 19 and the bolts which secure the clevis, the plow being otherwise left in its original condition.
I claim:
1. A draft attachment for plows comprising a draft member and means for positioning the draft attachment on the plow comprising a hanger, a lateral brace for said hanger, a clevis for attachment to the plow beam, and means for adjustably securing said hanger and brace in said clevis.
2. In a draft attachment for plows, a clevis constructed to extend laterally in relation to the plow beam and having a series of openings therein, ahanger having a longitudinal series of openings and adapted to assume a vertical position in said clevis, a pin adapted to pass through the openings in the clevis and hanger, a brace suitably connected at one end with the hanger, adapted to extend through the clevis and provided with a longitudinal series of openings, and a pin adapted to pass through the openings in the clevis and in said brace.
3. In a draft attachment for plows, the combination with a laterally extended clevis, a hanger vertically and laterally adjustable in said clevis, a diagonal brace having a pivoted connection with the hanger, and longitudinally adjustable in the clevis, means for fixing the adjustments of the hanger and diagonal brace in the clevis, and a draft member positioned by said hanger and diagonal brace; said draft member extending rearwardly and having draft connection with the plow.
The foregoing specification signed at Carson City, Nevada, this th day of October, 1915.
WILLIAM SCHEELE.
