Specification of Letters fatent.
Patented Apr. 118, 1916.
Application filed April 1, 1914. Serial No. 828,786.
To all whom it may concern Beitknown that I, WILLIAM D. MrronnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Staunton, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brushing machines, and has particular reference to a machine for brushing the hat and garments of a person and being desirable for use in barber shops and other places where such a machine would prove useful and desirable.
The main object of my invention is the provision of a machine which can be operated by hand, electric or other power, and which will efficiently and rapidly brush the hat or clothes and which will be compact and small in size to occupy a small amount of space in its place of installation.
Another object of my invention is the provison of a machine of the character and for the purpose stated, which will be of simple and durable construction, and be capable of production at a small price, and which will be thoroughly efficient and practical in every particular.
With these objects in View, my invention consists of a brushing machine embodying novel features of construction and co1nbination of parts for service, substantially as shown, described and claimed.
In order that the construction in detail and the operation of my machine may be fully understood and its many advantages be appreciated, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a brushing machine constructed in accordance with my invention, it being understood that I reserve the right to make any changes in the improvement which come within the scope of my claim.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a brushing machine embodying my inven tion. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view on an enlarged scale of one of the brush carriers and a portion of the endless chain or carrier, showing the construction of the brush carrier and manner of connection with the chain. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of one of the brush carriers with the brush head or strip in place, the bristles of the brush being omitted to more clearly show how the brush fits in the holder, and Fig. 5, is a detail view showing the preferred form of spring clip for securmg the brush.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, in whlch similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, the numeral 1 designates a pair of bars, formed with supports 2, for connection with the wall 3, and braced and secured in proper parallel relation by the connecting bars l. Disposed upon the rear faces of the bars 1, flCl]1CBI1t their upper and lower ends are the brackets 5 having bearings 6 for the shafts 7 upon which are secured sprocket wheels 8, and the lower of these shafts 7, being connected with the shaft 9 of a suitable motor, 10. If desired, the lower shaft 8 may be formed with an extension connected directly with the motor or dynamo, or the motor may be disposed or arranged in any des1red location with reference to the lower shaft, it only being necessary to receive power from the motor. If desired, the lower shaft may be driven by hand power through the medium of a crank 11, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. From this construction, it will be observed that I provide an open supporting structure or frame which is connected to the wall or structure and has mounted near its upper and lower end shafts which carry sprocket wheels, and over these sprocket wheels pass the endless sprocket chains 12, which are caused to travel through the medium of the lower motor driven shaft, and to the sprocket chains at regular intervals are secured the brush carriers 13, which are in the form of plates secured to the chain by means of fastenings 14, and are provided with guiding and retaining flanges 15, and at one end each is provided with a stop or abutment 16, and at its other end with a spring brush retainer 17, and fitting in said brush holder andretained by the flanges 15, are the brush heads 18, carrying the bristles 19, the brushes when in use being retained by the stops 16 and spring holders 17, which permit the ready and instant removal of the brushes when desired.
The operation of my machine will be readily understood from the drawings and description, and I would simply state that the lower shaft when driven imparts travel to the endless chains, which carrying the brushes cause the brushes to move rapidly the brushes to said holders, the construction permitting the application and removal of the brushes for the insertion of new brushes, or for cleaning or repairing of said brushes when found necessary, and thegeneral simple, durable and practical coiistruction of the machine.
I claim:
A brushingmachine of the character and for the purpose stated, consisting of a frame,
copies of this patent may be obtained for a pair of shafts mounted in said frame, 20
sprocket wheels on said shafts, sprocket chains engaging said wheels, a series of brush carriers fastened at their ends to certain of the links of said chains, said carriers each consisting of a fiat plate having 25 a pair of side flanges to engage the sides of the brush heads and having at one end an integral stop and at the other end a spring brush retaining clip, and brush heads fitting the side flanges and retained by said 30 stops and clips.
In testimony whereof I afiix my slgnature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM D. MITCHELL.
