Description

o-FFI' PATRICK OCONNOIR, OF ABERDEEN, WASHINGTON.
OFFSETTING.ATTACI-I1VIENT FOR OF SAWMILL-GARRIAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
Application filed September 29, 1914. Serial No. 864,031.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aberdeen, in the county of Chehalis and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Offsetting Attachments for Knees of Sawmill- Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in saw-mill log-carriage devices; and its object is the provision of ofisetting attachments for head-block knees which will afiord sup ports for logs of a tapering form and which may be adjusted without disturbing the knees.
With devices at present in use, it is gen erally requisite to insert blocks of wood or an equivalent between the smaller end of a tapering log and the knee adjacent to such end, while the other end of the log is brought against another knee in order that the outer side of the log will be disposed approximately parallel to the plane of the saw and afford a substantially straight slab at the first out. In consequence of the inconvenience in getting such filler blocks of suitable thicknesses and introducing them between the log and the knee near its small end, there ensues a considerable delay which I aim to dispense with by providing adjustable devices upon the knees which may be conveniently regulated with but a small consumption of time. To this end I provide a device which is connected to a knee so as to be readily protruded therefrom to a predetermined distance, a lever for controlling the movements of the device, and means for securing the same in an adjusted position, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a headblock and a knee therefor, with my invention applied and shown in operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar View from the side opposite that in which it is illustrated in Fig. 1, and with my improved extensionpiece in its retracted position. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the knee extension-piece shown detached.
The saw-carriage head-block 5, the knee 6 and the knee-setting devices including screw 7, may be of usual or suitable construction. As illustrated, the knee is provided at its top with two spaced ears 8 and a slot 9 therebetween.
In the form of my invention adapted to the referred to knee, I provide a bar 10 of a T-shape in transverse section. The flanges 11 and 11 or the bar are seated on the knee-ears 8 and the stem or tongue element 12 extends into the slot 9. The tongue element 12 is provided with spaced holes 13 which may be successively brought into register with alined holes 14 provided in the ears 8 to receive a locking pin 15 whereby the bar is secured to have its front end 10 at a selected distance from the front face 6 of the knee. The rear end of the bar is connected through a hole 16 by a bolt 17 with a lever 18 which is fulcrumed by a bolt 19 to a lug 20 formed or provided on the base of the knee.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, I provide for one of the bar flanges 11 a depending arm 21 whose office is to provide an abutment for logs of less diameter than would reach the tongue element or the bar proper. The arm 2-1 is spaced from the tongue element 12 so as to clear the knee when the bar 10 is moved to have its front face in a plane with, or to the rear of, the knee-face 6 22 represents a dog such as oftentimes employed with knees of the type illustrated in the drawings, and is operated by a lever, such as 23, to protrude the same to penetrate a log and prevent it from rolling, or it may be retracted into a chamber provided therefor in the knee.
The dog 22, it may be said, would not be used on a particular knee during the time my device is employed with that knee, although it would be used with another knee against which the log touches.
L and L in Fig. 1, indicate large and small sizes of logs in juxtaposition with the knee attachment.
The operation of the invention, it is thought, will be understood from the foregoing description.
What I claim, is-
In apparatus of the class described, the combination of a knee having a slot in its upper end, an extensionpiece slidably mounted upon the top of said knee for substantially horizontal movements, and having a depending tongue received in said slot, said extension-piece having an arm depending upon one side of said knee with an outer face in a parallel plane to the front face of Signed at Aberdeen, Vvash this 3rd day said knee, a lever connected to the rear of of September, 1914:. said extension-piece for adjusting the same with respect to the knee, and a locking pin PATRICK OCONNOR. engageable With apertures provided in the Witnesses:
knee and extension-piece for securing the E. PETERSON,
latter in adjusted positions. CHARLES L. REYNOLDS.
