10 all whom it may concern Be it known that wefNIorioLAs Sermonmm and J oH'N SUT'rEn, citizens of the United State, residing at Monohan and Issaquah,
respectively, in the county of King and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Imprm'ements in Automatic Draft-Controllers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention'relates to improvementsin dampers for stoves, furnaces and the like, and'the object of our improvements is to provide adamper of cheap, and simple construction that is automatic in its operation a view in front elevation of the same to a reduced scale; and Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section on broken line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 5 designates the cylindrical wall of a shell or casing having at one end a peripheral flange 6 and is desirably constructed of sheet metal. The flange 6 is aperturedl to receive bolts which serve to sewall and constitutes a part of the casing.
The plate 10-is provided with a plurality of symmetrically disposed sector-shaped openings 12, indicated by broken lines in Fig. 2, which are adapted to register with the similar shaped openings 13 in a damper or regulating plate 14 when the same is suitably rotated about a pivotal pin 15 by which the regulating plate is secured to the casing plate 10.
The-regulating plate 14: is advantageously provided with a protuberance 16 whereby it may be turned to open or close the openings 12, such turning movements being limited by the length of a slot 17 on the regulating plate and a pin 18 protruding therethrough from the casing end 10.
The casing wall 5 is provided in proximity to the flange 6 with a plurality of circumferentially disposed air inlet openings l9.
Within the shell 5 is provided a disk 20 of preferably a concavo-convex form and of somewhat less diameter than the inner-diameter of the casing. Said disk is rigidly secured to a horizontal channel bar 21 which is suspended by vibratory parallel links 29. and 23 from a channel bar 24 fixedly secured to the top of the casing wall 5. Said links are pivotally connected with the respective channel bars by pins 21 and 24 whereby the disk 20 is movable lengthwise of the casing and maintained rectangular to the axis thereof.
The position'of the disk 20 is governed bya weight 25.adjustably disposed onthe horizontal limb 26 of a weight arm 27 that is connected with one of the links, as 22, and extends upwardly through a slot 28 in the top of thecasing'wall 5.
To prevent fuel, ashes and the like, from entering the casing through the opening 8 we have provided an ash shield 30 to be secured tothednside-of the furnace wall 8., as by br'ahliets 31, to cover the opening 8". The inner end of this ash shield 30 is provided with perforations 32 of sizes toprevent coarse material from entering and at the bottom the shield is provided with a cutaway p'ortion or opening 33 whereby ashes or other material may escape without entering the casing. I
The operation of the invention is as follows: The device is applied as shown in Fig. 1 and the weight 25 is adjusted so as to e normally hold the disk 20'from the seat provided by washer 9 and into substantially the position in which it is shown by full lines in Fig. 1. The regulator plate 14; is then turned to close the openings 12 in the front wall of the casing until the fire is lighted and is burning briskly. With. the opening 12 closed, air for combustion pur poses, will ,be drawn in through the openings' 19, as indicated by arrows A. hen the fire is burning briskly under a strong draft through the openings 19 and-regulator plate a Edi disk 20 is thus permitting 14 is turned to' open more or less the holes 12 and permit air to be drawn in through such holes to flow around the periphery of the disk 20, as indicated by arrows B, a current is created longitudinally through the casing that tends to move the disk 20 forwardly into the position shown by broken lines in Fig. l-to thereby temporarily shut ofl the draftand accordingly check the fire. As
the fireis thus affected, the current of air through the casing is interrupted and the moved from'its seat on washer 9, a' new current of air to be established which, upon becoming unduly strong, will influence the disk 20 the same, and so on. The damper thus operates automatically and may becontrolled to regulate the current for the maintenance of either a hot or a moderate fire by moving the weight 25 on the arm 26 to increase or diminish "the suction necessary to move the disk 20, but subject to the effective sizes of opening 12, asdetermined by the adjustment of the regulator plate. v What we claim, is-
1.-A device of the class described, comprising a cylindrical casing having an inner open end, and air inlet perforations adjacent the inner end thereof, an apertured plate for the outer end of said casing, a damper plate having its periphery spaced from the peripheral Wall of said casing, yieldable means supporting said damper plate for movement longitudinally of said casing whereby said damper plate may be moved to blose the open end of the casing when subjected to a relatively strong current of to arrest v air admitted into the casing through the apertures of said plate, and means for closmg such apertures whereby said yielding means is capable of retaining the damper plate in open position with respect to the open end of the casing and thereupoair for combustion purposes is supplied through the medium of said perforations irrespective of the demand. a
2."A device of the class described, comprising a casing having an air-intake open: ing at its outer end, anair-outlet openir at its inner end and an intake opening in its periphery in proximity to its inner en'd,ja
damper-plate of less diameter than the inner diameter of said casing, means for supporting said damper-plate for movements longitudinally within the casing, a weight operatively connected to said damper-plate for yieldingly retaining the latter in posi- NICHOLAS SCHROEDER. JOHN SUTTER. 1
