HYDRANT.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
Application filed September 19, 1913. Serial No. 790,724.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICK J. MAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Andale, in the county of Sedgwick, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrants; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in hydrants, and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that one or more hose. may be easily and quickly connected thereto and the discharge of water controlled by a single valve cylinder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is exceedingly simple in construction and especially adapted for use in connection with fire hose.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on line 3.3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is'a plan view of the wrench or tool for operating the hydrant.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the main casing having formed interiorly thereof an annular shoulder 2 and upon which rests the lower edge of the valve cylinder 3, said valve cylinder having its upper end closed by a dome 4, said dome having rising from its center a squared lug 5 which is provided with a central bore 6 in which is engaged the stem 7, said stem being adapted to operate the usual valve, and has its upper end projected above the upper end of the lug 5 and is squared.
To hold the valve cylinder 3 in place a cap 8 is provided and has a central opening 9 for engaging the lug 5, said cap being further provided with a threaded flange 10 for engaging the threaded upper end of the main casing 1. y
The main casing 1 is provided near its upper end with plug openings 11, all of which are normally closed by thecaps 12, said plug openings being arranged in horizontal alinement.
The valve cylinder 3 is provided near its upper end with a horizontally disposed slot -13, which is of such length that upon rotation of the valve. cylinder 3, said slot will register with one or both of the plug openings 11, as desired.
The main casing 1 is further provided with a plug opening 1%, the same being normally closed by the cap 15, said plug being designed to have attached thereto the suction hose of a fire engine.
The cylinder valve 3 is provided with a slot 16, which is designed to register with the plug opening 14 when both of the plug openings 11 are out of registry with the slot 13 and when the hydrant is being used for supplying water to the pump of a fire engine.
In Fig. 4 there is illustrated a tool, which compresses a head 17, and an operating handle 18, said head being provided with squared sockets 19' and 20, the latter being greater in size than the former and is adapted to engage the lug 5 so as to rotate the cylinder valve 3, while the socket 19 is designed to operate the valve stem to turn on the water supply when desired.
.What is claimed is A hydrant of the class described comprising a main casing, a valve cylinder rotatably mounted in the casing, said casing having plug openings formed therein and disposed in horizontal alinement, a plug opening formed in the casing and arranged in triangular relation with the other plug open ings, said cylinder having a slot formed therein adapted to register with the first named plug openings, said valve cylinder also having a second slot formed therein adapted to register with the last named plug opening when the first named slot is out of registry with the first named plug openings, and means for rotating the valve cylinder.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
