Description
LQQQQQS,
H. P. BRUNK.-
- VALVE. I APPLICATION FILED JUNE 3.1915- Patented Sept. 11, 1917.
I RQK HUGH P. BRUNK, OF SYLVIA, WEST VIRGINIA.
VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. llll, 191% Application filed June 3, 1915. Serial No. 32,021.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH P. BRUNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sylvia, in the county of Raleigh, State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in valves, and has for its objcct to so construct a device of this charactcr that the flow of fluid may be discharged from a pair of spaced ports, or the valve may be regulated to discharge from a single port, said valve being operable to cut off the flow from all ports.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for indicating the discharge ports.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the valve.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the device.
Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the casing, having the seat 2 formed therein and communicating with the seat 2 are ports 3, 4 and 5, any one of which may be used as the inlet port.
The top of the casing 1 is provided with an opening 6 in which is engaged the stem 7 of the plug 8, said plug being rotatably associated with the seat 2 and is provided with radial communicating passages 9, 10 and 11.
A cap 12 is provided and serves to close the lower end of the seatfZ, said cap having a flange 18, and by which the cap is attached to the casing.
Mounted on the stem 7 is a head 14:, said head having a vertical bore 15 formed therein which is provided with an annular shoul der 16, which is engaged by the upper end of the coil spring 17. The coil spring 17 encircles the stem 7 and has its lower end resting upon the top of the casing 1, said spring serving to hold the top of the plug 8 in binding engagement with the inner surface of the top of the casing, thereby eliminating the necessity of using a packing or stufiing box.
The head 15% is so fashioned as to provide points 18, which serve as means to indicate that the desired ports are in communication with the desired passages. It will be noted that when a point 18 is alined with each port that all passages will then be in registry with the ports.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a valve casing has been provided so constructed that the use of threaded con-- nections are eliminated.
What is claimed is A valve comprising a casing, a seat in the casing, a plug rotatable in the seat and having radial communicating passages, ports formed in the casing and adapted tocommunicate with the passages upon rotation of the plug, a stem carried by the plug and eX- tending through the top of the casing, a head fixed to the stem, said head having an annular shoulder formed therein and its outer face provided with a plurality of angular surfaces, certain adjacent edges of which intersect to form pointers movable on the upper surface of said casing, a coil spring encircling the stem and having its upper end engaged with the shoulder and its lower end engaged with the top of the cars ing, said head having a plurality of points thereon which are adapted to aline with the ports to indicate which passages are in registry with the ports, said spring serving to hold the top of the plug in yieldable engage ment with the inner surface of the top of the casing, and thehead in yielding adjusted position.
In testimony whereof, I ailix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
HUGH P. BRUNK.
