The ook 47 is formed with an elongated body formed from'ia-.at b ar, and the rear en'd 'of this bodyis bent to form a rudimentary e `e 57. This eyev is attached to the end of t e chain formin the., loop 46, as indicated 7 most clearly in igs.A 1 and 7. At the Aend o posite the rudimentary eye 57 the body 7 5` o the hook 47 is bent laterally and formed into a curved spur 58, which spur is disposed `in a plane substantiall at right :ang-lesto the body l of vthe hook. his.construction enables the hook to. be ap lied -to a straight `taut chain, 'as indicated 'y the dotted lines' 59 v in Fig. 7. In this'connection7 it will be i understood that the bod offthe hook lies f substantiall parallel wit the direction-M Whichthe. c am'extends, and the spur '58 of '85 the hook is illustrated.
The arran einentfof the parts illustrated in Fig. 1, is tlgiatwhich arises when thewinch is to operate to screw to ether two drill sec- .tions connected by Va rig t-hand thread, and the mode of operation with this arrangement Will now be described: The lever 33 is rotated so as to close the cock l14;v in this Way, the"v` outlet from the barrelbecomes' closed. The'l` suita vle fluid, such as oil or glycerin, from` the rear endof the' barrel, forcing the same into the Aforward vend of the barrel throu h the valves 18 and 2 2, andthrou h the et duct 32. "'The'aceumulatingflui in the v for'- Ward end of thev4 barrel forces the'head' 10' the .ston-rod. 9.. ,I n thi s way/the chaine? f is ta. en up, so that the wrench 42 is operated, rotating the upperfdrillsection 41 toward Y the'ig'ht. The-anchor chain 45 operatesto tion Ythrough the medium of thezwrench 43. After the' wrench 42 'is moved' so farA as t o prevent the Winch from o erating upon -1t applied further back and the operation rel peated. In order'to allow the piston rod- 9 to. returnto its extended condition, it is only necessary-5to openthecock 14, whereupon Y free communication will be; opened between i the ends ofthe I t shouldlbe understood thatthe winchis' v not attachedto ilneflioor, butis 'simpl an-V chored. to the oor by the .chain 40. ith f this arrangement, the'f'winchj vcan evidentlyg shift its Pesion Se@ to. Suit the'changesin position. of. "the hook..'f. fin a horizontal Tdi-l The im; that the bm r..1z.of.l the' V passed into the eye of the linlgas.
pum lever 28 is then rocked so as'to drawja toward the rear ofthe. barrel, and draws inVv 'i prevent the-rotation Aof the lower drill seceffectively, this wrench wi 'be removed and i ist nder 'circumstances such-as those operating While the `Winch is intended kto describe be used for the purpose suggested, it is evidently capablevof being-used in many other connections.
Attention inolso oollod to the foot that tho I vpower which'drives the pump is exerted in a -vertical plane Which'does not tendto deflect the chains from a straight line.
Having thus described my' invention,. I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent:
