APPLICATION FILED 1AN.20.19 14.
Patented A 11,1916.
GLENN W. WILLARD, OF ALBANY, OREGON.
CARRIER.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
Application filed January 20, 1914. Serial No. 813,265.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GLENN W. WILLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Linn and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a carrier, and more particularly to the class of cases for use by mail carriers in rural districts.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a case wherein the equipment ordinarily required by a mail carrier in a rural district can be conveniently held so as to be readily accessible for use, the case being novel in form to render it compact, handy and useful.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a case which is simple in construction, strong, durable, reliable and efiicient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointedout in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the case open. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the case comprises an oblong body 5 preferably constructed from leather, although it may be made from any other suitable material, formed in one side and at the top thereof with an opening 6 so that access may be had to the interior thereof. The open side of the body 5 is extended to form a swinging closure section 7 for the opening 6, and this section is provided with end flap 8 and a securing flap 9 so that the said opening 6 can be completely closed. Mounted on the opposite side of the body 5 is a catch device 10 which engages a loop 11 carried on the flap 9 to fasten the swinging section had to the pockets 14L so that the equipment or the contents thereof can be readily removed for use.
Fixed to opposite end walls of the body 5 are the ends of a hand strap 15 so that the case can be conveniently carried by the user. This strap 15 is of a length so as not to interfere with the opening of the swinging section 7 or the closing thereof.
In constructing the body 5 with the opening 6 in the top and side thereof the upper portion of the said body is tapered as shown, thus giving a neat appearance thereto and avoiding it being rendered bulky.
What is claimed is A carrier of the class described comprising a body having an opening extended throughout the top and for substantially one-half of the length of the side diagonally of the same, a cover hinged to the body for closing the opening and adapted to rest against the remaining portion of said side when swung in a position for uncovering the opening, a pocket book confined within the cover and adapted to be brought to inverted position when the said cover is at rest against theside of the body, a plurality of partitions within the body and forming compartments therebetween, said partitions being of varying heights with respect to each other, and a flap on the cover.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
