Description

J. OUTLAND.
Press.
A jmxenor PATENT OFFICE.
J OSIAH OUTLAlD, OF BABNESVILLE, 0H10.
IMPRVEMENT IN LEVER-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,919, dated August 8, 1871.
T0 all whom z't may concem:
Re 113 known that I, J OSIAH OUTLAND, of Barnesville, in the eonnty of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and nsefnl Improvements in Lever-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, elear, and exaet description thereof, referenee beingl1ad to the aceompanying drawing and to the letters ofreference marked thereon Whieh form a part of this speeifieation.
lhe nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a press, as will be hereinafter more fnlly set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art t0 whieh my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proeeed t0 deseribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, whieh represents a side view of my press.
A represents the frame of my machine, in the upper part of Whieh is pivoted the lever B. On eaeh side of the pivot point is a metallie loop or journal, (L, and from the same are snspended the ratohets 0 0 In said ratehets works the head 1) of the wedge D, whieh is held in position by means of the guides E .E. G G2 are windlasses, from whieh ropes d d? pass upward around pul- 1eys 6 (2 on the ends of the lever B. Said ropes then pass downward aronnd pnlleys attached to the weights H H, and the ends of the rope are attached to the extreme ends of the lever B. f f are ratehets attached to the windlasses G G The operation of my press is as follows: Disengage the ratehet f ctached to the windlass G and turn the crank of the windlass G so as to elevate the weight H then the leverB on the same side descends and the ratehet 0 presses clown on the head of the wedge D nntil the ratehet C drops over the opposite side of the head b. Now, by detaehing the ratehetf and winding np the weight H by the windlass G2 the same process of forcing the wedge D down is continued until it passes clown to the last ngteh in the ratehets 0 O thus fi1rnishin gby means of the lever B, weights 1P H ratchets 0 (3 and wedge D, in eombination with the windlasses Gr G a simple yet powerful press, adapted to the wants of eheese-makers cider-makers, tobaeeonists, and others, at a comparatively insignifieant eost.
Havingthns fnlly deseribed my invention, what I daim as new, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of the pivoted lever B, loops a a, ratchets 0 0 and wedge D provided with head b, all snbstantially as shown and described, and for the pnrposes Ire-rein set fort-h.
2. The eombination of the leverB, ratchets C 0 wedge D, windlasses G G ropes d (F, and weights H H all constrneted and arranged snbstantially as and for the pnrposes herein set fortl1.
In testimony that I elaim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OSIAH OUTLAND. VVtnesses:
M. D. KING,
ABEL WILSON.
