Description
A. O. REMINGTON AND V. R. STEWART, OF WEEDSPORT, NEWT YORK.
IMPROVEIVI NT IN WATER-ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,888,
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, A. O.,REMINGTON and V. R. STEWART, of Veedsport, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have i11- vented a new and Improved Tater-Elevator; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specicatiomin which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of our invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of our invention, takenin the line mx, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved device for elevating water for domestic purposes, and of that class which are composed of a bucket and windlass, and the latter provided with a bucket-releasin g mechanism, to admit of the empty bucket descending without the necessity of reversing the motion of the windlass.
A represents a well-curb, which may be of rectangular or any suitable form 5 and B is a shaft, placed horizontally on the curb A, and having a crank, G, on one end of it, said shaft having on its opposite end a ratchet, D, into which a pawl, E, attached to the curb, gears, the ratchet and pawl preventing a reversemovement of the shaft B.
On the shaft B there is placed loosely apulley, F, to which the bucket rope, chain, or strap G is attached. This pulley F has a circular concentric flange, H, at one side of it, as shown in both figures. This pulley has no lateral motion, and thus the bucket will be elevated or lowered in a line vertical to the pulley.
On the shaft B there is also placed a sliding collar, I, which, while being allowed to slide freely on the shaft, is always made to turn with it by means of the ordinary feather and groove. This sliding collar I has a cir` cular iiange, J, upon it, the use of which will presently be shown; and the inner end of the colla-r I has ratchet-teeth a upon it, correy sponding to similar teeth a in the side of the flange H. (See Fig. l.)
On the shaft B there is placed a spiral dated October 16, 1866.
spring', K, which has a tendency to keep the teeth a of the collar I engaged with the teeth a' of the flange H.
L represents a lever, the fulcrum D of which is on a cross-bar, M, on the upper part of the weltcurb. This lever L has two pendent wedge-shaped arms, N N, at such a distance apart as to admitof being pressed down over the collar I, between the flanges J and H. The taper of these arms L is in a transverse direction, and when they are pressed down between the iiange J of collar I and the flange H of pulley F force the collar I outward from flange H, and disengage the teeth a of collar I from the teeth a of the flange H, the pulley F and iiange H being prevented from moving laterally under the action of the arms N by a shoulder, ax, on shaft B.
On the lever L, at the junction of the arms N N with it, there is formed a lateral curved iiange, O, the curvature of the flange corresponding with the curvature of the periphery of the iiange H of the pulley F.
The operation is as follows: In raising the filled bucket the crank O is turned from left to right, as indicated by the arrow, and the collar I, in consequence of being' engaged with the flange H, causes the pulley F to turn and draw up the bucket P, attached to strap G.
Then the filled bucket is elevated and its contents discharged, the operator presses down the lever L, and the arms N N, by their pressure against the flange J, force outward the collar I-and disconnect the teeth a from the teeth a', thereby releasing the pulley F and admitting of the bucket P descending by its own gravity.
The descent of the bucket P is regulated by the pressure of the curved flange H of pulley F, said flange operating as a brake, the pressure of the same being regulated as desired by manipulating the lever L.
This device is extremely simple, and there are no parts liable to get out of repair or become deranged by use. A
The raising and lowering of the bucket may be performed with the greatest facility, the parts being under the complete control ot' the operator.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters vertical to the pulley F, in the manner sub- Patenb- Y stentially as und for the purpose specified.
