BUST-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
Application filed May 23, 1914. Serial N 0. 840,526.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ESTELLA S. ORR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of-Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bust-Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices adapted to be worn by ladies to maintain the bust in proper position and to accentuate the natural lines of the figure.
It is the object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which can be readily adjusted to the form and which is cool and comfortable. This object is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device before it is adjusted ready for use, and Fig. 2
is a perspective view showing the device adjusted ready for wear.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a sheet of suitabletextile fabric having a length greater than twice its width and composed of two layers which are sewed together with a border of lace. The ends of the sheet are rounded. At the edge of the sheet, is a pocket 7 to receive draw strings 8, said pocket being formed by two parallel rows of stitchings. The pocket opens to one side of the sheet, midway between its ends, at the top and bottom, at which points the draw strings project so that they may be tied. The sheet also has two spaced, longitudinal pockets 9 for draw strings l0, and a transverse pocket 11 for a draw string 12, said pocket 11 being midway between the ends of the sheet and extending between the top and bottom portions of the pocket 7 and crossing the pockets 9. The pockets 9 open at the middle of the sheet at which points the draw strings 10 project, and the pocket 11 opens at each end where it joins the pocket 7, at which ends the draw string 12 projects. The openings of the pockets 7 and 9 are on one side of the sheet, and the opening of the pocket 11 on the other side; or the openings may be all on one side of the sheet. If the article is made of silk, the strings may be made of ribbon which would add to its attractiveness if tied on the outside, while in the cheaper grades they would be of tape and might tie on the inner side. Upon drawing the strings 8, 10
and 12, the sheet 5 assumes the outline 7 shown in Fig. 2, and it is held in this shape by tying the ends of the strings. The string 12, when it is drawn, gathers the sheet in the middle so that it assumes the shape of two substantially circular sections, which sections are given a concavo-convex form by drawing the other strings. can be readily adjusted to conform to and accentuate the natural lines of the figure. Upon untying and loosening the draw strings, the sheet can be straightened out flat, as shown in Fig. 1, so that it may be easily washed.
By the herein described construction the device permits perfect freedom of movement, and as it has no stiffening devices, it is cool and comfortable. It may be made of cotton, silk or other textile fabric. The device will be fastened to the undergarment by safety pins or other suitable fasteners and it extends well under the arms.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and eflicient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purpose for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within .its purview such changes as may be made within 7 the scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
I claim:
A bust form comprising a unitary elongated sheet of flexible material having a length greater than twice its breadth whereby to cover the entire bust of the wearer, a draw-string pocket extending across the sheet intermediate its ends and open at both ends, a pair of draw-string pockets extend- Thus, the sheet ing around the periphery of the sheet at strings in said pockets and arranged for each end thereof, the ends of the pair of connection of their opposed ends. 10
ockets opening opposite each other adj a- In testimony whereof I affix my signature cent to the ends of the first pocket, a pluralin presence of tWo Witnesses.
ity of pairs of draw-string pockets extend- ESTELLA S. ORR.
ing longitudinally of the sheet and spaced Witnesses:
transversely thereof, the pockets of each GERTRUDE HOBAN,
pair having opposed openings, and draW- C. V. HULL.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Eatents, Washington, D. (3.
