Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
Application filed August 16, 1915. Serial No. 45,637.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MARTINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Fullers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention consists of certain 1mprovements in stump pullers and relates particularly to a manually operated stump puller.
The object is to produce a simple and practical device of this character.
Another object is to produce such a device which may be conveniently transported from place to place.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings forming part of this applicat1on, and in which like reference characters indicate like parts: Figure l is aside elevation of my improved stump puller. top plan view of the pulling mechanism, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the front end of the stump puller frame.
1 represents a stone or masons wheelbarrow upon which is securely fixed a frame comprising the side walls 2 and 3, end wall 4, and intermediate walls 5 and 6. This frame may be of any desired construction or material, preferably of fabricated metal construction. lVithin the side walls 2 and 3 is journaled the cross shaft 7, which carries a winding spool 8 securely fixed thereto and upon the outer end of the shaft 7 adjacent the side wall 3 is fixed the spur gear 9 and by which the shaft 7 is revolved. A second shaft 10 is journaled within the side walls 2 and 3 and parallel with the shaft 7. Fixed upon one end of this latter shaft and meshing with the gear 9 is a small pinion 11 which imparts motion to the gear 9. Upon each extreme end of the shaft 10 is removably mounted a hand crank 12, and by which the shaft 10 is operated.
The intermediate wall 5 is securely fastened to the side walls 2 and 3 and has attached thereto in any convenient manner as at 13 the intermediate wall 6 which extends beyond the extreme end of the full width of the frame and united with the inwardly curved ends 14: and 15 of the side walls 2 and 3 making a secure holdfast means for the rear end of the puller and Fig. 2 is a.
to which the clevis 16 is attached to the bolt 17.
lVithin' the (two spaces 18 and 19 formed intermediate the wall 6 and the Walls 2 and 3 is loosely mounted upon the through shaft 20, the rope sheaves 21 and 21, there being one sheave in each space.
I Ablock 22 of any suitable construction, carrying a pair of rope sheaves 23 and 23 having ahook 24 upon its outer extremity and an eye 25 upon its inner extremity, forms an operative part of the pulling mechanism through connection made by means of the rope tackle reeved therethrough. One end 26 of the rope tackle is securely fixed to the eye 25 in the block 22, passes through the hole 27 in the end wall 4 of the frame, thence through the intermediate wall 5, below and around the sheave 21, thence back through'the intermediate wall 5, the hole 28 in the wall 4 and thence around the sheave 23 in the block 22,'back through the hole 29 in the endv wall 4 of the frame, through the intermediate wall 5, above and around the sheave 21, back through the intermediate wall 5, thence through the hole 30 in the end wall 4 and around the sheave 23 in the block 22, thence through the horizontally elongated opening 31,,t0 and around the spool 8 from which it derives its tractive stress, by the revolving thereof. Thus I have formed a compact portable block and tackle, having incorporated therein a hand winch for operating same.
The operation of the device is as follows: The barrow puller is wheeled to a position intermediate a stump to be pulled and suitable anchorage, such as another stump, or the like, with the wheel of the barrow headed toward the stump to be pulled, and the handles of the barrow toward the anchorage, and preferably within near proximity to the latter. instance by chain, is made between the anchorage and the clevis 16, the barrow advanced until such connection is taut, the block 22 carried forward a suitable distance toward the stump to be pulled and proper chain or other connection made between the latter and the hook 24 of the block. Then by means'of the hand cranks 12, the shaft 10 is revolved, imparting motion to the spool 8, thus applying draft to the fall of the rope wound thereupon, which will read- Suitable connection, as for ily dislodge the stump, provided it is Within the capacity of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is j 1. In a stump puller, the combination with a- Wheel barrow having a rectangular shaped frame fixed thereupon, of a winding drum mounted within and adjacent one end of the frame, a sheave shaft mounted within the frame and adjacent the opposite end thereof, a double tackle block extending beyond the frame, tackle reeved through the block, around the sheaves within the frame and passing both sides of the drum, the fall wound around the drum and means at the sheave end of the frame whereby it may be anchored.
2. In a portable stump puller, a rectangular shaped frame having a winding drum mounted adjacent one end thereof, a sheave shaft mounted adjacent the opposite end, a sheave block apart from the frame, tackle reeved through said block, around the sheaves in the frame and passing either side of the drum, the fall of the tackle being wound around the drum, and hold fast means at the sheave end of the frame.
3. A portable stump puller, comprising a frame having two parallel side walls, a right angular front end wall and the two opposite ends of the side walls converging into holdfast means, a winding drum, mounted within the side walls adjacent the front end of the frame, a manually operated power transmittingshaft adjacent the winding drum and geared with the shaft thereof, two freely revoluble sheaves mount ed adjacent the opposite end of the frame, a double sheaved tackle block free from the frame and tackle reeved through the sheaves in the block, through the front end of the frame, around the sheaves in the frame and upon either side of the drum, and the fall of the tackle wormed around the drum as and for the purpose described.
4. In a portable stump puller, the combination With a wheel barrow having a substantially rectangular shaped frame mounted thereupon, of a winding drum adjacent the front end of the frame, tackle engaging sheaves adjacent the rear end of the frame, a block and tackle in engagement with the drum and sheaves, and a plurality of tackle guiding holes through the front end of the frame whereby the tackle is kept in alinement with its various operating parts and entanglement of the tackle prevented.
1n testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
