I E. L. WHITE.
HANGER FOR LIGHT REFLECTING BOWLS.

EDWIN L. WHITE, OF NEW YORK. N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO 3'. H. WHITE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, Av CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
HANGER For; msnr-nnrnncrme.BowLs.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
' Application filed December 9, 1915. Serial No. 65,959.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN L. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, county of- Kings,
- city and State of New York, have invented shades or bowls, particularly for bowls of transparent material such as are employed in fixtures for producing a semi-indirect lighting effect. Hangers for such purpose now in general use, consist of an ornamen r tal part having a bent arm projecting rearwardly therefrom with a stud upon its free end to receive a lamp socket, there being a hook at the upper end of the hanger to receive a suspending chain. The bowl is clamped between the bent arm, which 'is within the bowl, and the ornamental part, which is outside the bowl and which must be provided with an inturned portion or shoulder upon which the rim'of the bowl can rest. These parts are generally cast in one piece.
The object of my present invention is to construct a hanger of the character described in such manner, that the ornamental 7 outside portion may be changed at pleasure allowing for the employment of any style, shape or ornamental design of such outside part that may be desired, without the necessity or expense of purchasing a socket supporting arm and chain hook for each dif ferent design; while the means for connecting the two members also forms a seat for the rim of a bowl.
The details of my invention are hereinafter particularly described.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1, is a side elevation of the socket supporting arm with the hook for the suspending chain integral therewith. Fig. 2, is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3, is a rear view of a rear view of another design of front I piece. Fig. 6, is a view looking down upon a 5 the top of the front piece illustrated in Fig,
5, and Fig. 7, is a side elevation showing a modification.
10, indicates the front piece, or that portion of the hanger which is outside the bowl when in' use. This piece is preferably of ornamental design. Y
11, indicates the socket supporting arm provided with a stud 12 at its free end to receive a lamp socket within the bowl.
In the preferred form, a hook 14 is formed integral with the socket supporting arm 11 to receive a suspending chain 15 although if desired the hook may be formed on the front piece was shown in Fig. 7.
The front piece 1 0, may be of any suitable shape or configuration, and its front surface may be ornamented in any desired manner. This front piece is provided on its back with two spaced lugs '16, which project uniformly a predetermined distance, from which point their free ends are curved downwardly in approximately hook form. These lugs are preferably formed integral with the front piece 10, but they may be soldered thereto, or secured in any suitable manner.
The socket supporting arm 11, has a front downward and lnwardly curved portion 17 provided with corresponding recesses 18, on its opposite sides. The end of this curved portion 17 is rounded and the metal cut away on each side on a line with the respective side walls of the recesses 18, forming lugs 19 with flat upper surfaces and rounded under surfaces.
The hook-ended lugs 16, on the front piece 10, are so spaced as to fit over the portion 17 0f the arm 11, between the recesses 18, and in connecting the socket supporting arm with the front piece, the lugs 16 on the piece 10, are passed through the recesses 18, in the arm 11, the under surfaces of said lugs resting upon the fiat top surfaces of the lugs 19, while the hook-ends of. said lugs 16, fit
over and against the rounded under portions 1 of said lugs 19; the rim of the bowl 520 when placed in position rests upon the top of the lugs 16, and against their hook-shaped ends, as shown in Fig. 4:.
21, indicates a set screw passing through 105 a screw-threaded hole in the socket supporting arm, the end of said screw contacting with the inner surface of the bowl when the hanger is in use.
,My invention provldes a means or con- 0 necting the socket supporting arm and front piece with great facility; it dispenses with the necessity of forming an inturned portion on the front piece to receive the rim of the bowl, as the connecting means answer this requirement in an efficient manner. Furthermore it lessens the cost of material and manufacture, also the expense to purchasers, as it is not necessary to purchase a socket supporting arm for each different design of ornamental front piece.
I claim as my invention:
l. A device of the character described consisting of an arm provided at one end with a stud for receiving a lamp socket and at its other end with a hook for receiving a chain, and a front-piece, both said arm and front-piece being provided with co-acting interlocking means forming a seat for the rim of a bowl.
2. A device of the character described consisting of a socket supporting arm provided with lugs upon opposite sides thereof, a front-piece having spaced hook-ended lugs upon its back adapted to straddle the said arm and rest upon and interlock with the lugs on said arm.
4. A hanger for light reflecting bowls,
comprising an arm provided at one end with a hook for receiving a chain and a stud at the other end for receiving a lamp socket with an intermediate forwardlv and downwardly curved branch provided with lugs on opposite sides, a fr0nt-piece provided with spaced hook-ended lugs adapted to straddle said branch and rest upon and interlock with the side lugs on said branch, and a set screw passing through a threaded hole in said arm to contact with the inner surface of a bowl.
Signed by me this 1st day of December, 1915.
EDWIN L. WHITE.
