JACK.
Application filed June 5, 1915.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeffersonville, in the county of Fayette and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Jack, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to jacks of that type actuated by an oscillating lever, one of the objects of the invention being to provide means whereby the head of the jack can be either raised or lowered intermittently by the oscillation of the actuating lever, it being possible quickly to adjust the parts so that such oscillation will move the head in the desired direction.
A further object is to provide a jack of this character which is simple, durable and compact in construction and will not readily get out of order.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a jack embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is a section on line AB Fig. 1, a part of the standard being broken away. Fig. 3 is a section on line CD Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a base having a standard 2 made up of parallel side members connected at their upper ends by a cross member 3 in which is formed an opening 4. Formed along each edge of each of the side members of the standard is a longitudinal series of ratchet teeth 5 and a longitudinal slot 6 is also formed in each side of the standard. Slidably mounted between the side portions of the standard is a bar 7 provided with a head 8 at its upper end, while its lower end extends into a yoke 9 which straddles the standard 2, there being a pivot pin 10 connecting the yoke to the bar 7, said pivot pin extending through the slot 6. Pivotally mounted within the yoke 9 are Specification of Letters Patent.

spaced dogs 11 the lower ends of which are adapted to engage the teeth 5, said lower ends being limited in their movement away from the ratchet teeth 5 by stop pins 12 arranged within the yoke.
A slot 13 is formed in the bar 7 at a point above the pivot pin 10 and extending into this slot is one end of a lever 14 which is fulcrumedon an ear 15 upstanding from yoke 9. Pivotally connected to the lever 14 and movably mounted within the slot 13 is a spring strip 16 merging at its ends into shifting fingers 17 which extend downwardly to points between the dogs 11 and thestandard 2, the lower ends of these fingers being adapted to slide within grooves 18 formed longitudinally in the inner faces of the dogs and which grooves extend to points above and below the pivots 20 of the dogs. The fingers 17 are so mounted that when they are in their elevated positions, as shown in Fig. 1, their lower ends will be seated in the upper portions of the grooves 19 so as thus to press outwardly against the upper ends of the dogs and hold the lower ends of the dogs yieldingly in engagement with the ratchet teeth 5. However, when fingers 17 are moved downwardly by means of lever 14, the lower ends of said fingers assume positions within the lower end portions of the grooves 19 and thus operate to press the lower ends of the dogs outwardly toward the stop pins 12.
When it is desired to use the jack for the purpose of lifting an object, the lever 14 is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 1. Yoke 9 is then oscillated by means of a handle inserted into a socket 21 at one end of the yoke. When the socket 21 is moved upwardly, one of the dogs 11 will slip upwardly over certain of the teeth 5 adjacent thereto, while the other dog 11 will remain stationary. When the socket 21 is moved downwardly, the dog which has previously been elevated will remain stationary while the other dog is moved upwardly over certain of the teeth 5 adjacent thereto. This operation is continued as long as desired, yoke 9 moving upwardly as a result thereof and causing the bar 7 to slide upwardly within the standard 2. When'it is desired to lower the head 8, lever 14 is shifted so as to move the fingers 17 downwardly within the grooves 19. Consequently said fingers will tend to push the dogs 11 apart at their lower ends. However, one of the dogs will remain in engagement with the adjacent teeth 5 so that the load will thus be sup ported while the socket 21 is moved downwardly until the other dog 11 comes into engagement with a ratchet tooth. By then moving the socket 21 upwardly the yoke will swing upon said last named dog as a fulcrum until the opposed dog is lowered into engagement with certain of the teeth 5. As soon as this movement is effected, the upper most dog will swing outwardly under the action 01"- its finger 17 and by then moving the socket 521 downwardly this outwardly pressed dog will be brought downwardly into engagement with certain of the teeth 5. Thus by the oscillation of yoke 9 while the fingers 17 are in their lowered positions, the
said yoke and the head 8 and bar 7 will be intermittently lowered.
What is claimed is In a jack, the combination with a standard having opposed series of ratchet teeth, a member slidably mounted on the standard, and a yoke straddling the standard and pivotally connected to and movable with said member, of opposed dogs pivotally mounted within the yoke, a lever fulcrumed on the yoke and extending into the slidable member, springs supported by the lever and en gaging the dogs, said springs being slidable to one position to hold the dogs in engagement with the teeth. and to another position to hold the dogs out of engagement with the teeth, and means upon the dogs for limiting the sliding movement of the springs.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aifixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL LANE.
