MAX FRED MANGELSDORFF, 0! UNION HILL, NEW JERSEY. I
, i HUMIDIFIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
Application filed April 29', 1914. Serial No. 335,101.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MAX F. MANGELS- DORF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Union Hill, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Humidifiers, of which the follow ing is a description in suchfull, clear, and exact terms as will enable any person skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an apparatus for producing a humid atmosphere, generally known as a humidifier and it consists in its preferred embodiment in a casing. containing an evaporator surface above which is a fan or other means for drawing a current of air over the surface.
of water and allows it to'fiow back over the evaporator surface against the before mentio'ned current of air. In this manner the water is vaporized and the vapor is absorbed by the air which passes off in a humid state ing drawings represent the preferred em-.
bodiment.
In these drawings Figure 1 1s a vertical section of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 1s a sectional plan on the line 22 of Fig. 1' and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1. 7
As shown best in Fig. 1, the base of the machine has a pan 10, designed to: receive water which may be supplied from any source. I prefer, however, to employ one or more bottles 11, which are inverted on steps 12 and held thereby with their mouths at the designed water level, so that as soon as the water falls below this level additional water is supplied from the bottles. WVhen empty the bottles may be removed and filled ones again placed in position.
Supported on the pan by legs 14 is the casing or body 15 which is preferably formed of sheet metal and contains a perforated bottom 16 on which is placed the Below the casing .18 a pan deslgned to contaln water and a form of water elevator WhlCh ralses a stream evaporator plates 17 These are set on edge and extend longitudinally of the casing for the whole or the greater part ofthe length thereof so as to provide a surface of wide extent over which the water may flow in finely divided streams. Beyond the aforegoin'g, the prec ise construction of the evaporator 17 1s not material.
- Above the evaporator is located the cap or top 18 of the'casing which communicates with the interior thereof by a throat be of any form but is here shown as of the slrrocco type. The motor (not shown) for driving the fan may be located above the cap or top 19 of the casing.
21 indicates the outlet for the humid air.
The shaft 22 of the fan and motor is hollow below the fan and extends down to the bottom of the pan 10 where its lower end is mounted in a step bearing 23 of any desired kind. At its bottom the shaft 22 has water inlet openings-24 and above the evaporator the shaft has outlet openings 24. 25 indicates a screw or other form of water elevator which, according to the form here shown,'is located in the bottom of the hollow shaft 22 and by the rotation of the shaft causes the water'to flow upward from the pan 10 to the outletopenings 24 fromwhich 'lt passes in streams over the evaporator and then flows down through the evaporator in films or finely divided streams.
19. and which contains a fan 20. This may Ward from the bottom of the casing through the evaporator. the water flowing down the evaporator and the air takes hp the water in the manner described. The fan forces the air current "out-through the outlet 26 in the cap or top 18 fromwhich the humid air is conducted to the place of its use.
I desire it understood that my invention is not limited to the specific form of the various elements shown in the drawings but that these may be substituted by other forms of the instrumentalities shown. For example the fan and water elevator need not be of the particular character shown; any
This current of air meets other known type of fan and elevator may be employed in their stead The invention resides rather in the combination of elements than in their specific construction.
Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent of the United States is:
In apparatus of the class described, an evaporating surface comprising a sheet and a corrugated spacing strip wound into a l spiral whereby the successive turns of the sheet are held spaced by the strip, and means for supplying moisture to the surface. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two Wit-
