To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD K. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Brick-Machine, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements 1n brick machines. o
The object is to provide a compact andefficient mechanism for cutting a clay bar into required lengths.
The invention comprises an improved housing and support for the wire reel formed by two annular channel members supported on a connecting hub or hollow shaft, a fixed shaft for supporting the hub or hollow-shaft, which is adapted to reciprocate thereon, so that moving parts are removed and protected from clay particles.
The invention also comprises an improved friction gear for driving the reel including co6perating friction elements, and a brake, one friction element movable between the brake and the other friction element, into engagement with the one and out of; engagement with the other and vice versa, whereby the machine canbe run at relatively high speeds and the power thrown into the reel without shock tothe mechanism and without impairing the efficiency of operation. f
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate merely by way of example suitable means for the embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the cutter. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation and partial section of the mechanism for driving and stopping the reel on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4:I .of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale, with some of the'parts removed. Fig. 5 isavertical section on line 55 of Fig. 4c.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views. v
The wire reel comprises the gear wheels 6 mounted and adapted. to rotate inthe housings 7, and connected by the cross bars 8, which support the cutting wires 9 as to one end, the other ends being secured to the wire rings 10 rotatable about sleeve 11, whichconnects and supports the housings 7. Sleeve 11 is mounted on shaft 12'which is rigidly secured at each end to stationary supports. Sleeve 11, and consequently the housing structure forming the reel carriage, has a longitudinal movement on shaft 12, which movement is facilitated by suitably located friction reducing means, such for eX- ample, as rollers 13. The housing structure 11, is maintained against rotative movement by means of the channeled arms 14: rigidly'connected with housings 7 co6pervating with the rollers lt mounted onthe stationary framework. The rollers 13 are -or reel carriage comprising elements 7 and also provided and oppositely disposed to which causes the reciprocating movement I of the reel carriage. This operation itwill be understood is controlled by the speed of themoving clay bar. One element of the friction device 19. is mounted on shaft 21, the other element is mounted on the sleeve 22,which sleeve 22 is mounted on the shaft 21 and which operates the cam 20. The pulley of 'the regulating belt 23' is mounted on said'sleeve 22 As all this mechanism is old a more detailed description is thought to'be unnecessary in this application.
The cutting reel isgiven a rotative movement for cutting through the bar of clay by the following mechanism: On driving shaft 16 is'rigidly mounted the friction element 24. On shaft 16 is loosely mounted the sleeve '25. Upon the sleeve 25 are mounted the pinions 26. .These pinions 26 cooperate with the gear wheels 6 of the cutting reel. The pinions 26 as will be seen in Fig. 3, are
given suflicient longitudinal extension to,
permit of relative" longitudinal movement of the gears 6.
. On the same shaft 34lis mounted one end of lever 35provided at its other orfree end with the roller 36 adaptedto co-actuate with Sleev'e25 is provided with the o two collars 30and 31 between which is inthe'ca'm37 mounted on the sleeve shaft22,
which is the same shaft that carries 'cam 20 which operatesthe reel carriage. The ac.
tuation of roller 36 by cam 37 ca'uses' the" elevation of lever 35 and the consequent longitudinal movement to the right of sleeve 25, pinion 26 and of friction element 38 which is secured thereto. .This causes the engage ment of friction element 38 with the rotating friction element 24 and the consequent rotative actuation of sleeve 25, pinions 2C and the wire cutting reel geared therewith. The spring actuated latch 39 is adapted to engage with a contact piece 40 which is adjustably connected with said arm 35, whereby the engagement between said friction elements is maintained, after the outer extension of cam 37 releases the friction roller 26, and until the cutting reel has been given a sufficient rotative movement to carry the cutting wires through the bar of clay. It will be understood that the cam 37 is timed to engage roller 36, with respect to the actuation of the reel carriage by the cam 20, so that the cutting movement of the reel will be started when the required length of clay bar, has assumed proper position. As has already been stated, the carriage or housing supporting the cutting reel is actuated by mechanism controlled by the movement of the clay bar so. that the cutting reel hasa longitudinal movement corresponding to the longitudinal movement of the clay bar while the cutting wires are passing transversely through said bar.
Means for releasing the friction drive of the cutting reel and stopping the movement of same after the cutting operation: The latch arm 39 is mounted 011 the shaft 41.. Secured to shaft 41 are a pair of arms 42 carrying the parallel shaft 43 which shaft 43 is straddled by the bifurcated end of lever 44 which is pivotally mounted at 45 on the housing of the gear wheel 6. This memher or lever 44 which is pivoted at 45 has an extension 47 beyond the pivot 45 which is shown curved for engagement with the rollers 46 mounted onthe gear wheel 6. These rollers are so positioned that one will engage with the extension. 47 shortly after its adjacent set of cutting wires has passed through the bar, whereupon the latch .mem-.
What I claim is 1. The combination of a suitably supported fixed shaft, a reel carriage or housing having a central sleeve slidably mounted on the shaft and inclosing the bearing portions, a wire reel rotatably mounted in the housing and means controlled by the move ment of the clay bar for reciprocating the housing.
2. The combination of a suitably supported fixed shaft, a reel carriage or housing having a central sleeve slidably mounted on the shaft and inclosing the bearing portions, friction reducing means interposed between the shaft and the sleeve, a wire reel rotatably mounted in the housing and means controlled by the movement of the clay bar for reciprocating the housing.
3. The combination-of a suitably supported fixed shaft provided with a longitudinal recess and friction reducing rollers seated therein, a reel, carriage or housing having a central sleeve slidably mounted on the shaft and inclosing the rollers, a wire reel rotatably mounted in the housing and means controlled by the movement of the clay bar for reciprocating the housing.
4. The combination of a suitably supported fixed shaft, a reel carriage or housing having a central sleeve slidably mounted on the shaft and inclosing the bearing portions, said sleeve provided with rollers for engaging the opposite sides of the shaft to prevent lateral play between the sleeve and shaft, a wire reel rotatably mounted in the housing and means controlled by the movement of the clay bar for reciprocating the housing. 5. The combination .of a suitably supported fixed shaft, a reel carriage or housing having a central sleeve slidably mounted on the shaft and inclosing the bearing portions, means for maintaining the housing against rotative movement, a wire reel rotatably mounted in the housing and means controlled by the movement of the clay bar for reciprocating the housing.
6. The combination of a suitably supported fixed shaft, a reel carriage or housing having a central sleeve slidably mounted on the shaft and inclosing the bearing portions, means for maintaining the housing against rotative movement comprising a channel element and a cooperating roller element,one secured to the housing and the other to the stationary framework, a wire reel rotatably mounted in the housing, and means controlled by the movement of the clay bar for reciprocating the housing.
7. The combination of a suitably supported fixed shaft, a carriage comprising wheel housings and a connecting sleeve mounted on the shaft, a wire reel comprising wheels mounted in the housings and connecting cross bars, a plurality of platen elements mounted on the sleeve, wire rings rotatably mounted on the sleeve between the platen elements, cutting wires supported be tween the wire rings and the cross bars and means controlled by the movement of the clay bar for causing the reciprocation of the housing.
8. The combination of a suitably supported fixed shaft, a carriage comprisingwheel housings and a connecting sleeve mounted on the shaft, a wire reel comprising wheels mounted in the housings andeonnecting cross bars, a plurality of platen elements mounted on the sleeve, wire rings rotatably mounted on the sleeve between the platen elements, cutting wiressupported between the wire rings and the cross bars, means controlled by the movement of the clay bar for causing the reciprocation of the housing and means for causing the rotative movement of the reel.
9. The combination of a wire reel and means for controlling its rotative movement comprising cooperating friction elements, one in operative relationship with the reel and the other connected. with a source of power, means for moving one element into operative relationship with the other, controlled by the movement of the clay'bar, means for maintaining. said elements in operative relationship comprising a latch and a release therefor operated by the reel after its cutting movement.
10. The combination of a wire reel and means for controlling its rotative move ment, comprising cooperative friction elements, one in operative relationship with the reel and the other connected with a source of power, means for moving one element into operative relationship with the other, controlled by the movement of the clay bar, means for maintaining said elements in operative relationship comprising a latch, a release therefor operated by the reel, after its cutting movement and a brake for stopping the movement of the wire reel, becoming effective upon the release of the friction elements. 7
11. The combination of a wire reel, a supporting housing therefor, said housing pro vided with a central sleeve having a reciprocating movement on an inclosed axial support, and means for causing said reciprocating movement controlled by the movement of the clay bar.
12. The combination of a wire reel,a s upporting housing therefor, said housing provided with a central sleeve having a reciprocating movement on an inclosed axial support, and means for causing the rotative movement of the reel, controlled by the movement of the clay bar.
18. The combination of a wire reel, a supporting housing therefor, said housing hav ing a reciprocating movement on an axial support, means for causing said reciprocating movement, comprising a cam and actuating means therefor, controlled by the movement of the clay bar.

The combination of a wire reel, a supporting housing therefor, said housing having areciprocating movement on an axial support, means for causing said reciprocat ing movement controlled by the movement ofthe clay bar, means for causing the rotative movement of the wire reel comprising a constantly driven friction element and alatera-lly moving cooperating friction element ment with the other friction element, comprising a cam'and actuating means therefor controlled by the movement of the clay bar, means for maintaining said elements in operative relationship, comprising a latch, and
means connected with the reel for releasing the latch after a cutting movement.

17 Operating means for rotating cutting Wire reels comprising a constantly driven friction element and a cooperative friction element, a pinion connected thereto and geared With the Wire reel, said pinion being mounted so as to have rotative and also longitudinal movement, means for causing longitudinal movement thereof to bring the friction element connected therewith into contact with the constantly driven friction by the movement of the clay bar for reciprocating the housing.
