T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY T. SHEARER, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVaynesboro, Franklin county, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding-Nlachines, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to grinding machines and particularly to the mechanism for traversing the grinding wheel across the carriage, or to and from the work, its object being to provide such a mechanism which may be quickly and easily operated from a convenient point on the outside of the machine, and one by which said wheel may be rapidly moved to and from its operative position by power taken from the power-shaft of the machine.
A further object is to provide such a traversing mechanism which may be readily applied to any machine, it being located upon the outside of the machine casing so that practically no change in the machine structure is required inits application.
With these and other objects in view said invention as illustrated, comprises a shaft operated by a pulley from the belt which drives the grinding wheel, said shaft having mounted thereon a conical friction wheel adapted to engage either one of a pair of friction disks mounted upon a sleeve keyed to the shaft which controls the travel of the carriage which carries the grinding wheel. This mechanism is controlled by suitable levers within convenient reach of the operator. Modifications in details may be made without departing fro-m my invention which will be more clearly defined in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the grinding wheel carriage with my improved reversing mechanism applied thereto, Fig. 2 a sectional view looking in the direction of the arrow from the dotted line 2-2 in Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3 a detail section on the dotted line 33 in Fig. 2.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the grinding wheel, B the grinding wheel base, G the grinding wheel carriage, and D the grinding wheel driving belt.
The grinding wheel A is mounted upon the usual spindle a, which carries a pulley (61 around which passes the belt D. This belt passes over an idler pulley b and down around the driving drum (not shown) of the grinding machine and up over a second idler pulley b and thence around a tensioning pulley b and back over the pulley a upon the grinding wheel spindle a. This is the usual method of driving the grinding wheel and is illustrated and described as a means of operating the improved reversing mechanism.
The grinding wheel base B is mounted to slide transversely on carriage C, as usual and has a bracket 1 secured thereto. This bracket has an extended arm 2 in which is journaled one end of a short shaft 3. Upon this shaft is mounted a pulley 4 in such position as to contact and press downwardly upon the belt D so that a movement of this belt will transfer power to the said pulley 4. The opposite end of the shaft 3 is journaled at 5 in a cylindrical casing 6 mounted upon an upright shaft 7, journaled in the base B. The inner end of the shaft 3 has a conical friction wheel 8 mounted thereon adapted to contact with either of a pair of friction disks 9 and 10 carried by a sleeve 11 which is splined to the shaft 7. The disks 9 and 10 are adapted to be brought into a driving engagement with the friction wheel 8, the direction of rotation of the shaft 7 being governed by which of said disks is brought into such contact. The movement of the disks 9 and 10 is accomplished by means of an arm 12 whose yoked ends 13 engage a groove 14 formed in one end of sleeve 11. Said arm 12 is pivoted upon a shaft 15 having bearings in the casing 6 and the bracket 2, and upon the outer end of this shaft is rigidly secured an arm 16, the outer end of which is bifurcated to receive the end 17 of a push-rod 18 to form a hinge connection between said arm and push-rod for operating the reversing mechanism. The rod 18 normally holds the sleeve 11 in a central position with disks 9 and 10 equi-distant upon either side of the friction wheel 8, said position being sustained by means of a spring 20 interposed between one side of a support 21, and a collar 22 secured to said rod 18. The outer end of this rod has a handle 23 for convenience in operation.
