Coating webs.-In a machine for making boxes, for instance of the kind described in Specification 28,084/13, [Class 18, Boxes &c.], the glueing - rolls are continuously driven at a constant speed when not in contact with the material, but are rotated faster than their driving - shaft by contact with the material. The glueing-rolls 17 are mounted on a shaft 47 in movable bearings 48 in the sides of the glue-basin 50, the bearings being held downwards by a spring 51 so that the rolls will be out of contact with the material 18, which pases over a roller 21 under a roller 22 and between this and a third roller 23. All the moving parts of the machine, except the rolls 17, are operated from a shaft 5, the rolls 17 being driven from a small pulley 11 attached to the driving-pulley 8, which is connected by a clutch with the shaft 5, so that, when the machine is stopped by unclutching, the gluerolls 17 continue to rotate so long as the driving- pulley is driven. The material 18 receives a variable motion, which is transmitted to the shaft 27 of the roller 23 through a disk 31 having grooves engaged by a pin 32 on a gearwheel 33 driven by a gear-wheel 35 on the shaft 5. On the shaft 34 of the wheel 33 is a cam 55 preferably formed of two disks connected by pins and slots so that the length of the recessed part may be adjusted. The cam coacts with cam rollers 59 carried by levers 56, 53, the arms 56 being connected by a spring 57. When the rollers 59 reach the recessed part of the cam, the spring pulls the arms 56 together, thereby causing the arms 53 to raise pins 52, which lift the bearings of the glue-rolls 17 until the rolls contact with the material. The rolls 17 are then driven by the material at a greater speed than they receive from the pulley 11, this being allowed by a ratchet connexion 60, 61 between the shaft 47 and the shaft 62, which is driven from the pulley 11. To allow the glue-rolls to be disengaged from contact with the roller 22 at any time, a wedge-piece 64 is provided on a rod 65 connected by a rod 66 with a handle 10 which operates the clutch by the rod 9. On operating the clutch to stop the machine, the piece 64 thrusts the arms 56 apart, thus allowing the glue-rolls to fall out of engagement. Modifications are described in which, instead of the rolls 17 having movable bearings, the gluebasin is lifted at one end and pivots about a rib at the other end; and, alternately, the frame carrying the bearings of the rollers 21, 22 is lifted at one end about pivots at the other end ; in both cases, the engagement and disengagement is effected through levers operated by the cam 55.
