Description

SAMUEL B. JOHNSON.
Device for Extinguishing Fire.
"7,891. -Patented August 8, 1871.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-EXTINGUISHE RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,891, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. JOHNSON, of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Device for Extinguishing Fire 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my inven tion appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin drawing making part of this specification in which the figure is a view of acasing employed in connection with my invention.
This invention relates to a mode of extinguish ing fire, and consists of a suitable casing or receptacle, which may be termed a grenade, for a gas, acid, or other medium, which will extin guish fire, which casing or receptacle is to be thrown by hand or discharged as a projectile against or into the fire, so as to break, and there by liberate the contents of the casin g in order to act on the fire for the purpose. stated.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a casing or vessel, which may be of a globular, cylindrical, or other form, and constructed of metal, glass, or other material suitable for the purpose intended. This vessel is to be filled by compression with carbonic acid, chlorine gas, or any other gas or acid, or combination thereof, or any solid or liquid material, which, when united or mixed with water or otherwise, will produce a gas or acid to be capable of extinguishing fire.
In carrying out my invention the vessel A should be provided with an inside or outside chamber for an explosive material, suitable nipples, fuse-tubes, or caps, or other devices, and is to be thrown by hand or projected by means of gunpowder or other agent against or into the fire, whereby, by means of fulniinates, caps, fuses, or other mediums, the vessel will burst or be broken, thus liberating the gas or acid, and thereby causing the latter to come in contact with the fire, so as to extinguish the same.
It is preferable that the vessel be in the form of a grenade or bo1nb, and constructed of glass, that it can be easily thrown or discharged, and break when it strikes the spot against or toward which it is directed,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is- 1 1.. The mode of extinguishing fire by means of a vessel containing an extinguishing medium, to be thrown or projected into the fire, and by breaking to liberate said medium in order to act on the fire, substantially in the manner set forth.
2. A vessel to be thrown with the extinguishing medium into the firc, and 0pc ate substantially as and for the purpose described.
To the above I have signed my name this 17th day of July, 1871.
SAMUEL B. JOHNSON.
