I UM 11mm: 51 awvewtfi 1 49 7. g Q20. Ms m 4101b moi w V Tm; COLUMBIA EWOGRAPH 120., WASHINGTON, bar,-
ANDREW YUROW, or new Yoim, n. Y.
LocK.
To all wliom' itmay concern: i Be it known that LAN RE YURoW, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in locks and particularly to the type used in securing doors of buildings and the like with reference to their frames, commonly known as night latches. V n
One object is to provide an improved form of lock,'the bolt and'keeper of which are disengageable only by actuation of the -locking mechanism, but which may be engaged by bringing one part into intimate contact with another, as by closing the door.
A second object is-to'provide means combined with the lock whereby the door may be closed without causing locking engagement, that is to retain the bolt out of an engaging position when desired.
These and other objects such as simplicity of construction and operation, effectiveness and durability, are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts, hereafter described and shown in the annexed drawing, forming part of this specifica tion, and in which I Figure 1 is a general front elevation of a lock and its keeper, showing an application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear plan view of the lock, the back cover plate being removed. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view, taken on line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the keeper. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing amodified form of bolt, and Fig. 7 is a fragmental perspective view taken on line 74 of Fig. 5.
In the drawing the casing 10 is provided with openings 11 to receive screws or other securing means by which the lock is attached rigidly to the door in the customary Specification of Letters Patent.

covers the; lock mechanism, the plate being set within the edges of theca's ing and rigidly held bythe screw 16 enteringthe-iixed post i 17 near the center of the lock. v,
, At the front of the lockcas'ingis revolubly'mounted an elongated diamond shaped knob 18, the stem 19 of which passes through the shell into the interior where it is; rigidly connectedwiththe dog 20, the offset arms .21 of which impinge, like those of the. dog 14, against the oppositely, disposed plunger I plates 22, each bf which is rigidly seemed an the ends of rods 23.
A pater lu s 24 are formed with t e casing 10, at the side intherear of the post 17, and engaged .gwiththe lugs is a transverse bar 25 in the rods 23 are slidably mounted.
Spring *26:eneire1e the rods 23 ex' erting pressure between" the plates 22 and the bar 25 tending to keepi'the'plates normally in contact wlth the dogs, opposing their thrust and, returning the rods rearwardly after i The front ends of the rods 23 are rigidly engaged with a yoke 27, having onits opposite side a rigid bolt 28, of any preferred cross section, which passing through the front end of the lock casing is provided with an enlarged head 29. A'
second diamond shaped knob 30 of lesser size is also revolubly mounted on the face of the lock 'casing' 10 in the center and toward the front, its stem 31 engaging a cam 32 adapted to contact with the yoke M 27, holding it extended when turned in one dlrection and offering no impediment to its free action when turned reversely. Thus it may be seen that the bolt may be extended by either the movement of a key ,in the barrel 12 or the'knob 18 and held, if desired in such position by the knob 30'; when however, the latter is in an inoperative position and the key, barrel and knob not actually held by an operator in such manner as .to' force the bolt outward, it will be carried back by virtue of the springs 26, only a short portion of the bolt and its head extending in front of the lock, this being its normal position. 1
On the door frame or j amb contiguous to the lock is secured a keeper plate 35, rigidly secured by screws 36 and having on its front extending edge a pair of projections 37 formed with beveled hook shaped lugs 38.
The inner sides of these lugs are also beveled at 39 as they extend down into the sides of the recess 40, the latter being suited to receive the bolt 28 as it enters by closing the of the plate 35, the body of therbolt 28 lying in the recess 4E0 where it is securely 'maintained until a key in the barrel 12 or the bolt.
the actuating knob '18 be operated to'release Thus, it will be seen, that a secure fastening means is provided that can not be picked or forced and that the device presents no difficulties in manufacturing or application. JAlso that any of the several styles of high grade locks may be used in conjunction, the invention being in the bolt actuating and securing means rather than in the peculiarities of the key devices.
Having thus described my invention, what 7 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lock, the combination with a casing, a cylindrical bolt slidable therein and means for actuation thereof, of an enlarged circular head on said bolt exterior of said casing and a hooked'keeper plate Copies of this patent may be obtained for having means for engaging said bolt and head.
2. In a lock, the combination with a casing, a cylindrical bolt slidable' therein,
' means foryprojecting said bolt outwardly on one side of said casing, a key operated means for projecting said bolt on the other side of the casing, a head of enlarged sectional area formed on said bolt, means for normally retracting said bolt, a keeper plate having a recess'suited to receive said bolt and hooked. projections formed on said keeper plate adapted to engage and hold said head. 7
3. In a lock, the combination with a casing, a hollow bolt slidable therein, and actuating means therefor on each side of said casing, of means for keeping said bolt in normal engagement with said actuating means, means for holding said bolt extended, an annular head formed with said bolt, a fixed keeper plate and means combined with said keeper plate engageable with said bolt head when in an extended position.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and'State of New York, this 27th day of May, A. D. 1915.
