LEVI SHERMAN SKEL'ION, 0F OKMULGIEE, OKLAHOMA.
GLASS-POT DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 3, 1913. Serial No, 765,326.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,LEV I SHERMAN SKnL-v TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Okmulgee, in the. county of Okmulgee and State of Oklahoma, have .invented cer- .a hinge, whereby the pot that is inverted may be permitted to hang at an angle to the frame axis to facilitate cleaning or removal of refuse glass therefrom. Further, the arrangement is such that air may be supplied through-the pot in use to the interior of the article being drawn therefrom and automatically shut off from the other pot on. the frame. v
Generally, it is an object of the invention to simplify the construction of such devices, to enhance the ease and reliability of operation, and to provide a pot-carrying device particularly adapted for use separate from a furnace.
When read in connection with the description herein, the details of construction and arrangement of parts contemplated by the ,invention' will be apparent from the accompanying drawing, forming .part hereof,
, wherein an embodiment of the invention is disclosed, for purposes of illustrationJ While the embodiment shown and described herein now is considered a preferable one, it is to be-understood that it is not the intention to be limited necessarily to the exact delineation herein in interpretation of claims hereinafter, as it is obvious that modifications of structure can be made within the limits prescribed by the claims without departing from the nature and spirit of the invention. 4
Like reference-characters .refer to corresponding parts in the views of the drawing, of which 5 f Figure 1 is janelevation, partly in section; and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Referring more particularlyto the draw ing, 3 designates standards supported in a 'fixed position in any suitable manner.
These standards carry substantially horizon- PatentedApr. 11, 1916.
tal shafts l and 4 adjustably and removably held by set-screws 5 or the like. a Rotatably mounted- 0n shafts 4 and 4 is a frame 6, preferably circular in ,plan. The
frame is spaced from one ofthe' 'standards by the collar 7 and an outwardly-extending hub 8 jo-urnaled on shaft 4. On the other side the frame has an outwardly-extending hub 93ournaled on shaft 4 and terminating in an enlargement 10 in which there is a beveled recess 11 on each side of the shaft,
whereby there is formed a member of a.
clutch. Next on shaft 4 there is amember 12' (constituting the other member of the clutch) axially movable on the shaft and having a lug 13 arranged .to seat in recess '11. Member 12 is prevented from-turning on shaft 4' by a key 14:.
is disposed between member 12 and a collar'16 fast on the shaft. The arrangement is such that, when the frame is turned on the shafts, the lug 13 will ride out. of recess 11, and that, when the frame is turned onehalf of a complete rotation, the lug under action of spring 15 again will seat in the recess, restrain the frame from rotative movement, and maintain it in fixed position until suflicient force to makethe lug ride out of the recess again is applied to the frame. A turning member 17, adapted to be.
grasped by the hands, is fixed to one of the hubs.
therefrom flanges 18-.
The frame 6 has,,extending laterally- Each flange is dis posed on the opposite side of the frame from the other, and each lies in a single plane that is parallel, or substantially parallehto the other flange. The flanges are arranged to have molteneglass pots 19 seat thereon.
' Each pot has extending around its exterior a heat-insulating covering of asbestos .or other suitablernatenal 20, which 15 held in place by a metallicband 21 surrounding the pot and secured by a ring 22, which overlaps theband 21. The ring issecured to I the frame by a hinge 23 atone place on its I ,1
periphery, this hinge including a pivot-rod 24 that may be Withdrawn when it is desired to remove the pot entirely fronithe frame, and by bolts 25 passing through the flange 18 at other places on the periphery or by other suitable aeparablefastenings. When a pot is brouglflv to an inverted position by turning the Frame, the separable air entering through so )lV-')i )e l r l y fastenings may he removed and the pot per mitted to swing downwardly on the hinge to an angular position with respect to the frame axis. as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. to facilitate removal of refuse glass or other matter therefrom. 1
For the purpose of supplying air to the interior of an article being drawn. each pot has extending upwardly of its L'lHSSllOlK'llll' space a central hoss 21", and a passage or duct 27 extends from the bottom-of the pot througl'i. and to the top of. the central hoss. A pipe extends from the plane of one flange 18 to the plane of the other. and it is so positioned that its ends will register with the passage .47 when the pots are in place and then form a tight connection with the bottom of the pots. Near each end of pipe ".28 is a illlYQ-(ilzililbtfl' 28). within which is a gravity-valve Elli. of pipe between the two valves jourualed on the end of a supply-pi 'ie 32, which is disposed axially of and. fast in shaftl and extends outwardly thereol a sullicicnt distance for communication with any suit-- able source of air supply. The valves 30 are arranged so that the one that is ahove the coupling or adjacent to the upper pot from which glass is being drawn will be open and the one that is below the coupling or adjacent to the lower pot will he closed. whereby 32 will he discharged through the passage 27 of the upper pot and prevented from discharge from the passage of the lower pot. When the frame is turned over. the \'ll\". adjacent to the pot that was uppermost willclose and that adjacent to the pot that was lower most and now heconies the uppermost pot will open autoinatically. wherehy flow of air will he directed properly without the. necessity of attention on the part of the operator.
The shaft -lmay be adjusted on the supporting-stainlards by loosening and tightening set-screws 5. so that the upper pot always will he held in a substantially horizontal position when the lug 13 is seated in recess 1.1 of the clutch.
llaving thus described my invention,
.\ central T-coul'iling 2-31" what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A glass-pot device comprising a frame rotatable about a substantially horizontal axis and having thereon a plurality of glasspots each having a passage extending through the glass holding-space thereof. an air-supply pipe in communi :ation witlreach of said passages. and a valve for each pascon'trolling admission of air thereto and arranged to open when the pot containing its passage is up 'ierinost and to close whensaid pot is lowermost.
2. A glasspot device comprising a frame rotatable about a substantially horizontal axis and having thereon two omiositelyalis posed glass-pots each having a passage through the glass-holding-space thereof. a pipe in communication with each of said passages, an air-supply conduit leading into said pipe intermediate its ends. and in said pipe on each side of said conduit a valve arranged to open when it is above said conduit and to close when it is below said conduit.
3. A glass-pot device comprising a frame rotatable ahout a substantially horizontal axis and having thereon two oppositely-dis posed glasspots each having a passage through the glass holding-space thereofl a pipe extending from one of said passages'to the other, a centrally-positioned coupling in said pipe an air-sup dy conduit connected with said coupling. and in said pipe on each side of said coupling a valve arranged to open when it i. ihove said coupling and to close when it is below said coupling.
at. A glass-pot device, comprising a cylindrical frame rotatahle about a horizontal axis, pots oppositely mounted on said frame. a metallic hand around each pot and hingedly connected to the frame. and means secured to the fraun and engaging the hands to hold the pots in place.
In testimony whereof I allix my signaturo in presence of two witnesses.
