NURSERY-CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
Application led July 3, 1914. Serial No. 848,823. I
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, TILDA B. LEMAN,`of Rapid City, in the countyv of Pennington and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursery-Chairs; and. I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in nursery chairs, one object of the invention being to so construct the device that the sides and ends shall be of such height as to prevent the child from falling out even whenin a standing position.
A further object is to construct the de vice in such manner as to conne a child comfortably therein andso that it will not be liable to be accidentally overturned, and yet be easily movable from place to place.
A further object is to provide a double seat, one portion of which is padded and .movable with respect to the other portion,
the latter having a central opening, and to provide ready access to the space below said seat from the rear of the chair.
With these and'other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a nursery chair embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Y
The body 1 of the chair has a general rectangular shape comprising` front and back walls 2 3, sides 4-4'and a bottom 5,'-'all of which may be conveniently made of wood.
The back 3 is made of considerable height (approximately equal to the height of `a child who is beginning to stand) and is preferably made flaring toward its upper end.
The rear portions 6 of the sides 2 are made of a height approximating that of the back 3, while the .forward portions of said sides are yappreciably shorter in height and support a table 7 the latter being made partly circular in form and extending over theupper end of the front 2. The table 7 may project outwardly beyond the front 2 and sides 4 and be provided at its outer curved edge with an upwardly projecting flange 8,
while the inner edge of said table'is curved and provided with padding 9. The 'sides 4 are provided on their inner faces with padding 10 and the inner face .of the back is provided with padding 11. The bottom or floor 5 may also be padded if desired. The upper edges of the back 3 and the portions 6 ofthe sides 4 may be bound with soft material 12.v A box 14 is provided in the rear portion of the chair and affords a space 14a to which ready access may be had through a door 15 in the lower portion of the back. The box 14 is provided with a double seat, one member 15 of which is made with a central opening and the other member 16 of which may be padded and'hinged to or otherwisemovably connected with the member 15 or with the back 3 of the chair. Straps 17 (provided with suitable adjusting buckles) may be attached Within the chair to hold the child in the rear portion of the chair. Cross bars 18-19 are secured under the bottom 5 of the chair and disposed at right angles to each other, the cross bar 18 projecting appreciable distances beyond the front and back of the chair and the cross bar 19 projecting appreciable distances laterally beyond the sides thereof. These cross bars thus form arms which kproject well beyond the vertical planes of the walls of the chair and are provided at their ends with casters 20, and thus a broad supporting base is provided for the chair so as to4 prevent possibility of upsetting and yet permit the chair to be readily moved from place to place.
Various slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention Without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details here-4 in set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A nursery chair comprising a floor and closed side, front and back Walls suiicient in height to provide an inclo'sure for a child, a table mounted upon the top of the front Wall and the forward portions of the side Walls, a box seat within said inclosure, a door in the back Wall permitting access to the space within said box' seat, said box seat vhaving a top member provided with an opening, and a movable top member to normally cover the first-*mentioned top vmember of the box seat. j
2. A nursery chair comprislng a rectangular body having closed front, back and side Walls and a Hoor, forming an inclosure for a. child, arms secured to said floor and projecting forwardly, backwardly and laterally from the edges of the floor, and casters at the free ends of said arms.
3. A nursery chair having solid back, front and side Walls and e closed bottom, the back Wall and portions of the side Walls projecting above the plane of the end of the solid front Wall, padding on said side and back walls, a tray fixed to the upper end` of the :front Wall and portions of the side Walls, said tray having a Curved and padded inner edge, a commode compartment on the closed bottom and opening through the back Wall of the chair, :t door closing said compartment, a movable cover for said commode compartment, arms secured to the bottom of the chair und projecting outwardly beyond the vertical plane of the several walls thereof, and casters near the outer ends oic the several arms.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
