To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WARREN W. DoHER'rY, a citizen of the United. States, residing at New York, in the county of New York State of New York, have invented certain i new and useful Improvements in Mufiier Gut-Outs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as "will enable i others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
I This invention relates to improvements in muiiier cut-outs, and is adapted for use in connection with the exhaust pipes of explosive engines although the device is not reerence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the sevcral views, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a muflier cut-out with the parts in the position they would occupy when the exhaust gases are passing through the muflier; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 with the parts'in the position they would occupy when the cut-out has been operated to prevent the passage of gases through the muffler; Fig. 3, a

Referring to the drawings the improved cut-out is shown as comprising a tubular member A including cylindrical terminal portions 10 and 11 and an intermediate portion 13 of substantially square cross sections and having an opening 1 1 in one side and the opposite side arched longitudinally as at 15 for the purpose of permitting free pivotal movement of the valve member of the cutout to be hereinafter referred to. The cylindrical portions 10 and 11 have the outer'ends of their bores en- .large das at 17 and engaged in these enlarged portions of said bores are exhaust pipe sections 18 which are held in assembled relation to the member A through the medium of set screws 19 mounted in the portions 10 and 11 respectively.
The valve employed in the cut-out is formed of a tubular member B'having parallel opposite sides 20 and curved opposite sides 21 and 22, said sides 21 and 22 being oppositely curved as clearly shown in the drawing. The opposite sides 20 are connected by a tubular portion 23. The opposite sides 20 are provided respectively with flanges 2 1, while the free end of the side 21 is provided with an extension 25. Onewall of the opening 14 is provided with an'inwardly; directed stop flange 26 while the inner end of the tubular portion 11 is provided with a stop flange 27. In assembling the valve B within the member A the tubular portion 23 is alined with the bearings 16 and a shaft 28 inserted through the bearing and the tubular portion and secured to the latter by means of pins 29. An operating lever 30 is fixed on the shaft 28 exteriorly of. the
member A. Encircling the shaft 28 exteriorly of the member A is a helical spring 31 one end of which is anchored to the member A and the other end to the lever 3O. This spring constantly tends to hold the valve B in the position shown in Fig. 1. In this 30-.
sition one edge of the side 22 of the valve engages the stop flange 27 and the exhaust gases are free to pass through the cylindrical portion 17, through'th'e valve B and through the cylindrical portion 17 to the mufiier (not shown). It will be noted that when the valve Bis positioned to permit the passage of exhaust gases to the muffler the flanges 24: will engage the lower edges of the sides of the intermediate portion 13, while the flange 25 will engage the stop flange 26.
The valve 13 is operated to the position shown in Fig. 2 through the medium of suitable connections with a foot lever conven-- iently disposed for actuating by the driver. When the valve B is in the position shown in Fig. 2 the side 22 closes communication between the cylindrical portions 10 and 11 and engages the stop flange 26. In this position the exhaust gases will pass out through the opening 14 and will be directed by the side 21 of the valve so as to partake of a course substantially parallel to the roadway and thus do away with the unpleasantness of dust that would arise should the exhaust gases take a course directly downward.
What is claimed is In a muflier cut-out the combination of a tubular member having an opening in one side, and a valve pivoted in said member and adapted to move through said opening, said In testimony whereof I afiix my signa- 2 ture, in the presence of two witnesses.
