Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,834, dated August 8, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SUMNnn VAN HORN, of Chicopee, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented an Improvement in Pot and Kettle-Covers, of which the following is a specitication:

M y improvement consists in making such covers in the nature of two or more plates or disks,

arranged one above the other, the upper plate or main cover being connected with the stovepipe or iiue by means of a pipe or duct; the object thereofbeing,when applied to a kettle wherein victuals are cooking in boiling-water, to prevent the rapid evaporation of the water, to promote the cookingI of any part of such victuals not covered by the water, and to prevent the escape oi' steam and scent of the cooking into the room.

In the accompanying drawing making a part hereof, Figure l is a plan of my improved cover connected with the stove-pipe, and Fig. 2 a sectional side elevation of the same applied to a kettle.

The part marked A represents the upper plate or main cover, which, when applied to the kettle J ,rests on the rim thereof. B is the lower or supplementary cover, hanging within the kettle and some distance below the main cover. C and D are tubes projecting from plates A and B, respectively, one of which tubes, fitting snugly into the other, serves to connect such plates, and allows of their being readily sepa-rated, also of being adjusted at a greater or lesser distance apart 5 but any other convenient method of connecting such plates may be adopted, as a central hasp-like connection, or the arrangement of three or more elastic hooks near the outer edge ofthe main cover for the support of the supplement-ary cover. E is a short pipe or thimble, projecting i'rom the main cover A, through which communication is had with the kettle J. F, G, and H is the pipe or duct connecting the main cover with the stove-pipe or chimney I.

The results of my improvement are, that more steam being condensed by two covers than by one, the kettle is less liable to boil dry, that the main cover, acting as a jacket to the supplementary cover, keeps the space below the latter hot enough to insure the cooking of any part of the victuals not entirely covered by the water 5 that .all steam not condensed and the scent of the victuals are conveyed by pipe F G H into the stove-pipe or chimney I, and thus kept out of the room.

It is obvious that supplementary cover B may be dispensed with if rapid evaporation is desired, and more than one such cover employed if thought advisable.

What I claim as my invention is A pot or kettle-cover, composed of two or more plates or disks, A and B, connected substantially as described, in combination with pipe F G H,

as specified.
