To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KosLowsnY, a subject of the King of Hungary, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to sash locks and the object of this improvement is to provide a sash lock which has a portion adapted to lock the sashes of a window closed and a secnd portion adapted to lock the sashes of a window permitting one of said sashes to be opened slightly.
A further object is to provide a latch in a sash lock which will not become accidentally moved.
Other objects will. appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side view of a window equipped with a sash lock embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on line *22 in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is similar view taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 2, Fig. 41 is an enlarged fragmental section of the window and lock, Fig. 5 is a section of the same taken on line 55 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a similar view taken on line 66 of Fig. 4:.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises a base member 7 having a recess 8 in its upper wall and a shoulder 9 in one side of said recess. The upper wall of said base 7 is perforated and a headed pin 10 passed therethrough. At the lower end of pin 10 is a plate 11 which is also perforated and pin 10 passed therethrough and provided with a head to maintain plate 11 in position. Between the plate 11 and upper wall of base 7 is a compression spring 12. end of pin 10 on the top of base 7 is a locking latch 13 provided with an arcuate upwardly extending cam flange and having a lug 14 extending into recess 8 and adapted to engage the shoulder 9 to limit the pivotal movement of the latch 13. The compression spring 12 presses downwardly on plate 11 and frictionally locks the latch 13 against Specification of Letters Eatent.

accidental pivotal movement on the pin 10, as will be readily understood. The base 7 is secured to the lower sash 15 of a window by means of screws 16, or their equivalent.
On the upper sash 17 of the window is secured a base member 18 having ears 19 eX- tending upwardly therefrom and pivoted between the ears 19 is an upright member 20, pivoted as at 21. The member 20 is provided with two surfaces 22 and 23 disposed at an angle to each other and each adapted to alternately engage a spring 24. When the spring 2 1 engages surface 23, the member 20 is maintained in upright position, and when the spring 24 engages surface 22, the member 20 is maintained in horizontal position and frictionally locked in such positions, as will be readily understood. On the side of member 20 is a stop member 25 adapted, when member 20 is in horizontal position, to engage the locking edge of latch 13 to lock the window sashes 15 and 17 against relative movement.
The latch 13 is provided with a T-shaped slot 26 in its locking portion adapted to engage the upri ht portion of member 20. The member 20 is provided with ribs 27 which engage the edge portions of the recess 26 to prevent lateral movement of the upright portion of member 20 when engaged in said slot. At the upper end of member 20 is a stop head 28 adapted to engage the upper edge of the locking portion of latch 13 to limit the relative movement of said sashes. At the lower end ofribs 27 is a recess 29 adapted to permit the pivotal movement of latch 13' so that the locking edge of said member may be swung out of engaging position with the member 20 to permit moving one or the other of sashes 15 and 17 to open the window.
The base 18 is secured to sash 17 by means of screws 30 and further secured to said sash by means of an angular finger 31 which extends downwardly on the rail 17 between the inclined adjacent faces of the meeting rails, with the end thereof extending under said rail. The finger 31 is inset in the wood of said rail to provide a smooth outer surface for the same.
In operation, when it is desired to lock the window sashes against relative movement, the member 20 is moved to its horizontal position, as inclined in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to bring the catch 25 in engagement with the locking portion of latch 13. When it is desired to lock the window so that one or the other oi the sashes l and 17 may be opened slightly, the member 20 is raised to vertical position with the upright portion of said member engaging the recess 26 in latch 13. When the device is in this position, sashes and 17 may be moved relatively until the upper surface of the lock- IO ing portion of latch 13 engages the under side of stop head 28 which limits the relative movement of said sashes. When in this position, to prevent the member from being disengaged from recess 26, the ribs 27 is are provided and engaged in corresponding portions of the recess :26 to prevent the member 20 from being moved laterally from said recess. The lug 1-1- is provided on the under side of locking latch 13 to limit the move- 20 ment of said latch on its pivotal pin 10. The lug ll engages the shoulder 9 at both ends of the movement of said latch, thereby limiting the movement of said latch in both directions. The spring 12 frictionally locks the latch 13 in either of its positions in which it may be left.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of 30 variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A. sash lock comprising a base adapted to be secured to the upper rail of a lower sash, a latch pivoted thereon to swing in a horizontal plane and provided with an upwardly extending arcuate cam flange and y with a T-slot extending inwardly from the edge of the latch through said cam flange,
and a pivotally mounted member adapted to be secured to the upper sash to swing in a vertical plane and comprising a T-shaped bar and a stop member at substantially right angles to each other, said bar when invertica-l position being adapted to slide in said T-slot and said stop member being positioned above and adapted to be engaged by said cam flange when said bar is in horizon tal position, said stop being of greater width than that of the slot in the cam flange, and a stop at the end of said bar adapted to engage said latch, substantially as described.
2. A sash lock comprising a base adapted to be secured to the upper rail of a lower sash, a latch pivoted thereon to swing in a horizontal plane and provided with an upwardly extending arcuate cam flange and with a T-slot extending inwardly from the edge of the latch through said cam flange, and a pivotally mounted member adapted to be secured to the upper sash to swing in a vertical plane and comprising an elongated bar and a stop member at substantially right angles to each other, said bar being T- shaped in cross section, from a point immediately above said cam flange, when in ver tical position, to the end, and adapted when in said position to slide in said T-slot and said stop member being positioned above and adapted to be engaged by said cam flange when said bar is in horizontal posi- U tlon, sald stop being of greater width than that of the slot in the cam flange, and recessed to receive the upper edge of said flange, and a stop at the end of said bar adapted to engage said latch, substantially as described.
