To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL E. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Manchester, county of Hillsboro, State of New Hampshire, haveinventedan Improvement in Picker-Stick Mechanism for Looms,

'of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention relates to improvements in picker sticks for looms and the principal object of the invention is toprovide an improved modification of the usual picker stick mechanism of the Northrop type of loom which will be more effective in operation and more easily repaired and which will save material.

Other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the following description at its lower end to a shoe 2 having a curved sole 3 resting and rocking upon the usual support or stand 4 which is attached to the loom side 5 in the usual manner. The slotted stand 4 supports a depending bracket 6 which serves as a journal for a spring drum 7 which carries a strap 8 for returning the picker stick to normal position. The picker stick may be and is actuated by the usual cam mechanism and lug strap not shown.

The picker stick 1 desirably is secured to the rocker shoe 2 by a clamp comprising a channel shaped member 9 of the form illus trated in Fig. 2, the picker stick being located within the channel 10. The other member 11 of the clamp is U-shaped in cross section and embraces the opposite face of the picker stick, the clamping members being secured together and to the shoe by a bolt 12 passing through said clamping members and said picker stick and being provided with set nuts 13.

In order that the picker stick may be adjusted properly a backing screw 11 provided with a check nut 15 passes through the shank of the shoe and bears against the rear side of the clamping member 9 as illustrated in Fig. 1. In order to retain the shoe in proper position the clamping member 10 extends through a slot in the stand and is provided with bearing surfaces 16 and 17 which engage the sides of said slot. Lugs or projections 18, 19 formed upon the lower end of the clamping member 9 prevent the picker stick from jumping out of the slot during the actuation of the picker.

In the usual construction the strap 8 which is actuated by the spring drum passes around the end 20 of the picker stick and is secured to the same beneath the clamping member 11 by the bolt 12. In this construction itwill be'observed that the strap has an indirect pull upon the picker stick. Furthermore the breaking of the strap requires the dismantling of the clamp and the removal ofthe member 11 to fasten the strap in place.

In order to obtain a more direct tangential pull upon the strap by the spring drum and to increase the effective leverage upon thepicker stick, and provide means whereby the strap may be easily attached to the picker stick and readily repaired I have provided the clamping member 9 with an extension 21, preferably in parallelism with the axis of the picker stick, said projection having a hooked end 22 adapted to enter a suitable aperture in the strap adjacent its end and positioned so that the pull upon the lower end of the picker stick for returning thesame to normal position is substantially tangential thus providing an increased leverage on the picker stick while permitting adjustment of the picker stick to the proper field of operation. By this construction the distance between the drum and the hooked member 21 is approximately half the distance between the drum and the clamping member 11 which secures the strap to the picker stick in the old form of construction, whereby a saving of considerable of the valuable material used in the strap for the picker stick is effected. sands of looms are used in each large weave straps avoids a considerable amount of stretching of the straps and insures a more uniform operation of the picker stick" It Will throughout the life of the strap. be observed that this form of attachment of the picker stick to the spring drum can be easily substituted in the usual type of loom by merely removing the old form of clamping member and substituting therefor the new form of clamping member illustrated in Fig. 2 so that it may be adapted to looms now in use and in many instances its substitution Will provide means for using the remaining portion of a broken strap, thus increasing the life of the picker stick mechanism in the usual form of loom, furthermore by thus providing a means for attaching the strap to the clamping member the device may be readily repaired if the hooked extension is fractured by reason of crystallization or any other cause.

It is to be understood that the form of clamping member and the extension thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings are illustrative merely and that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms within the meaning of the claims hereto annexed.

Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. Picker stick mechanism for looms comprising a picker stick and rocker shoe, and means for supporting the same, a clamping member for said picker stick adjustably secured to said rocker shoe and having a projection extending beyond the bearing surface of said rocker and means secured to said extension to return the picker stick to normal position.

2. Picker stick mechanism for looms comprising a picker stick, a rocker shoe and means for supporting the same, a clamping member for said picker stick secured to said rocker and having an integral depending hook extending beyond the bearing surface of said rocker, a spring drum, a strap se-- cured to said drum having its end extending substantially tangentiallyto said drum can apertured to engage said hook whereby said A stick will be restored to normal posit-ion;
