TYPE-'WRITING MACI-IIfiE:
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A 4., 1916.
Application filed November as. 1911. Serial No. 661,661.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADoLPHUs S. DENNIS, a citizen of the United State s,residi'ngin Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in TypefiVriting' Machines, of which the following is a specidesigned to separate sheet or fication.
This invention relates to the special paper feeding devices of typ'ewriting machines,
facilitatethe writing of bills and simultaneously recording them on a ledger leaf.
In billing machines the bill to be sent out is inserted on the platen together with the I tally or record sheet from the loose leaf ledger with a carbon sheet in between. It is desirable tohave the items of the separate bills written closely together on. the ledger sheet so as to waste no space thereon. To platen is rotated backwardly a predetermined distance after each bill is "written, to a position permitting the completed bill to be removed and a new bill placed on the machine, the platen being then rotated forwardly to carrythe new bill with the same ledger sheet up to the proper printing point. In this. operation the platen is rotated forwardly a distance determined by the depth of the bill head, or the distance of the first typewritten line from the upper edge of the bill, and is rotated backwardly a less distance, the greater forward rotations providing for spacing on the ledger sheet, the entries of succeeding bills.
An object therefore of my invention. is'to improve and simplify the means for rotating the platen so as to feed the paper, 'and'cause the proper spacing of the tally sheet or ledger leaf, and so that it may also} be used to feed envelope. 1,"
In the preferred form of the invention, the crank is mounted on a sleeve pro ecting through the casing, the sleeve carrying a detent which floats idly o ter a (toothed) crown gear; By adjusting a cam formed on the retaining wall or casing, the detent may be locked to the crown gear, so that the gear may travel over a predetermined distance with the crank. It will be seen that th s forms a clutch for connectingtlie ci'ankwitli the body portion of the crown gear, which is effective fora portion of the revolution of the crank. The extent ofthe effective con-.- nection can be adjusted, to correspond to the .ted, showing the relative tation of the platen thereby, .in their proper relative positions. Fig. 9 is 105 number of lines.
, extent of movement of the platen desired, by
changing the position of theadjustable cam. The crown gear in turn is connected to the platen axle by an adjustable means, so 'as to rotate the platen a variable amount. on the return movement of the crank, so that a'certain amount of space may be lost, so 'as to uncover the last line of writing on the ledger lowing bill or item'sheet. 'The invention may also be used for feeding envelops 'seriatim over the platen, or for other work rjustable cam. I-spring detent yieldingly holds the crank in its. normal position of .rest, but permits it to be moved beyond said position in either direction. N Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel sheet on the subsequent'feeding of the fol- I isa fragmentary view showing the device attached to a carriage of a typewriter. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectio Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 33 0 Fig. 2, partly broken away to disclose the underlying structure and showing the crank starting on its movement in a direction to rotate the platen-backwardly. Fig. 4: is a vertical section oii lline 1% of Fig. 2, showing the detent and cams in their normal position. Fig. 5 is 'a vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig.'l2,iand shows the means for determining the distance to be lost in the movement of the crank in a direction to rotate the platen backwardly. Fig. 6 is a detail )erspective view of the cams. Fig. 7 is a front view of the device with parts in cross section and parts omitposition of the detent to the crown gear when not in clutch ing engagement therewith. Fig. 8 is a View similar to Fig. 3, showing the crank at an indu'ring the backward rotermediate position with ,all parts;
a right endview, showing the pin and scale for setting the feeding device for a certain the crown gear. g 1
The usual platen 1 of the Underwood typewriter is mounted on an axle 2- our- Fig. 10 is'a detail view of naled in the bushings 4, of the inside carriage 5 held to the main carriage, which is not shown, by the lift hooks 6. Fastened at one end of the axle 2 is a finger knob 7, by means of which the platen may be moved in either direction an unlimited extent. At the left end, between the bushing l and the finger knob 7, the regular paper line-spacing mechanism is found, consisting of a ratchet 8 fast on the axle 2, moved intermittently by apawl 9 and heldin position by a detent 10. At the opposite end of the axle 2 projecting beyond the carriage 5, a on 11 is held by a pin 12 extending through lts hub 18 and the axle 2. Mounted loosely on the hub 13 for adjustment around the hub is a disk ll having an arm 15 carrying a cup 16. Projecting through this cup 16 is a. pin 17 adapted to be projected through any one of a series of holes 22 in the cup 11.. The pin 17 has a cap 18 by which it may be grasped, so as to be drawn against the action of a coil compression spring 19 anchored against the wall 20 of the cup i6 and a shoulder 21 on the pin 17. lVhen this pin is withdrawn from a hole 22 in the cup 11, Fig. 5, it may be reset in one of the other holes enlarging or decreasing the distance between the movable pin 17 and a pin 23 fixed to the cup 11.
Operating between the pins 17 and 23 carried by the cup 11, is another pin 2i fixed in the body of a crown gear 25. This crown gear 25 is mounted loosely on the axle 2 and floats between the limitations of the pins 17 and 23, but is normally held with the pin 24: against the pin by the tension of a coil. spring :26 anchored at its ends in a slot- 27 in the crown gear 25 and to a pin or stud 28 on the axle Across the face of the teeth 29 of the crown gear 25 rides a detent 30. This detent 30 (Fig. l) is pivoted by pins 31, to the hub This hub 33 revolves loosely on the axle 2, and protrudes through a casing or cam disk 31, so that an actuator in the form of a crank may be fastened to the hub. It will now be seen that by rotating the crank 35, the detent 30 will be forced out by the cam surfaces of the teeth a9 which are pointed. Therefore, to connect the driving power of the crank 35, the detent 30 is jammed between two teeth by a means which will now be described. A sec ond cam disk 36, loosely mounted on the hub 33, is held against turning, by a pin- 38, fixed on a stationary casing 39, and resting in a slot $0 in the disk 36. To connect the cam disk 3st to the cam disk 36, and thus hold the disk 34 stationary, the latter is pro vided with a movably mounted springpressed pin l2, which'is similar in construction to the pin 17, and is adapted to engage in any one of a plurality of holes 41 in the disk so that the relative positions of the cam disks may be varied. The cam disks 34 and 36 have respectively cams l3 and 37, which are concentrically arranged with respect to each other and in 'close juxtaposition, so that the extent to which they overlap can be varied by a relative movement of the disks 3% and 36, and thus the combined effective extent of camming surface can be varied. In other words, the cam portion -13 of the disk 3% is constructed on the edge of the said disk, while'the cam portion 37 of the disk 36 is slightly away from the edge, so as to allow the camming surface 43 to slide by, in order to telescope the two camming surfaces and reduce their length of action upon the detent 30. A slot ll in the disk 31 is for assembling purposes only, to admit the disk being placed below the pin 38.
To provide a definite starting and stopping point for the movement of the crank, and to insure uniformity of operation, a hollow 45 is made in the casing 39 fast to the disk 46, held against rotating by the screw l7 in the stud 48 on the inside carriage Into this hollow 15 a detent roll d9 on a plate 50 is forced by a spring 51. anchored to a pin 52 in the crank 35 and a stud on the plate 50. The plate 50 has two slots 51, through which studs 56 and 57 pass, allowing a sliding movement of the plate 50. As the detent roll i is held with a yielding pressure in the hollow 15. the crank may, if desired. be carried beyond the stopping point and the platen thus rotated indefinitely in either direction.
For the purpose of indicating the relative positions of the cams l3 and37, the disk 3i is provided with a series of graduations. indicated at 60, which form a scale located in juxtaposition to the overlapping margin of the casing 39, which is provided with a let erence mark 61 showing the relative adjustment of the cam disk 3% to the casing 39, and thus indicating the extent of overlapping of the cams l3 and 37. Means is also provided to indicate the number of lines which the mechanism will space at each actuation thereof, which consists in a graduated scale 62 provided on the periphery of the cup 11, which has located in juxtaposition thereto a reference mark 63 on the adjustable pin 17. This shows the amount which the pin 2i will move idly before coming in contact with the pin 17, and thus the amount or number of lines which the ledger will be spaced between the writing of two successive bills;
In the operation we will assume that it is desired to start a fresh ledger sheet with the first bill. The ledger sheet and the'bill are placed together with a carbon sheet in between so that they enter at the bight of the platen. The crank 35 is moved to the right (looking at Fig. 5) one complete revolution. and the detent 30 which is permanently conmated to travel with the crank, at first rides on r the teeth 29 of the crown gear 25, until iii-reaches the cam portion .43 of the disk .34. ,The detent-will. now; be forced into thecav ity between two teeth ,on-. further travel it willdrive or crown gear 25 with; it.
I tinned rotation-ofthe crank and therebycause the platen to rotate.
and held there, sothat carry the 10 to lock the platen inposition; the crank the socket 45 operation, the platen may rotation of the crank or actuator 35 in the opposite direction ,The crank 35, on
by the arrow shown the crown gear 2 5,
.. to the platen 35 continuingvuntil.ithas completed its revolution when the roller 49 comes to rest in The crown gear has its teeth arranged in accord with those of the ratchet 8. of the {regular line space mecha-' nism, so as .to coincide with the resting positions of the detent 10. The bill and ledger sheet have now-been advanced to a position. where they can be written on,
be rotated backwardly to a position such that the bill can be removed from the platen, leaving the ledger sheet still on the platen. This backward rotation of the platen is eifected by a from that just described. being rotated as indicated in Fig. 3, willfcarry the idly over the teeth 29 of until again 'cammed in, the cam- 37 on the diskBG. The 25 will then be carried along detent as before,
this time by crown gear with the crank, first winding up on the spring 26, until the pin 24 comes into engagement with the pin 17, when a positive connection will be made through the cup 11 axle 2, so that the platen can be rotated backward to enable the bill sheet to be slipped fromtheplaten. The extent ofthisrota-tion will thenbe determined by the cam 43 and the teeth the point where the detent 30 slips-o'itthe free end ofithe cam 43g the crank 35 continuing its movement beyond this point until it has madea complete reverse .revolution with the roller 49 once more entering the socket4'5fl V y With the freein' of the detent 30 from 29. not only will the platen 1 stop itsmovement butthe spring 26 will be free to act so as gear 25' and bring thepin 24 once more into engagement with the pi-n23', in order to en able the platen onjja' subseouentrotation'of the crank 35, to androtated in a 'line-feeding direction just It will be noted that the extent which the ledger sheet and the bill sheet are fed onto The.- crown gear .251
and after this to carry the crownbe "immediately picked up will be determined the period detent ,is locked between the teeth 25, and that this in turn the platen, I which the 229 of the crowngear depends uponthe' combined.- eflfe'ctive cam- ,ming length of .the cams 37 and 43.- Hence,--'
, it will be evidentthat the extent which the bill sheet is'fed to avoid the bill-head, so
to bring a clear space thereon opposite printing pointof the typewriter, may be regulated by regulating the combined ate reversed to remove thebill sheet from the platen, a lost motion takes place beforet'ho spring 26 is wound up sufiiciently to bring the pin 24 into engagement with the pin 17 During this time, the platen 1, of course, is stationary, so that it has not ha as much counterrotation for a single revolution of the crank 35, as it had. in placing the bill sheet on theplaten. It is therefore apparent that the ledger sheet instead of being returned its full distance which it was advancedby the initial rotation of the crank 35 will be only returned a traction of this distance, so that when it is subsequently refed with a fresh bill sheet, instead of the last typewritten line which was at the printing point coming once "more to the printing point, afresh line of the ledger sheet will be advanced to the printing point. The extent of this feed betwimn-two successive bill sheets, that is to say, the distance between the last printing line and the new printing line on the ledger-sheet, will be determined by the extent of play,
the distance between the pins 23 and 17. It will-thus be see that by varyingthe position of the pin 17, the extent which the ledger sheet will be. fed upbetween the writing of two bills, will depend on the position of the pin 17,- which can be adj ustedby placing it in any-one ofthe holes 22, to vary the space between the written items of two separate bills as inscribed on the ledger sheet.
or, in other words, by
