Be it known that I, LESTER A. WERNERY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn borough, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for feeding work pieces over the platen of a typewriting machine, and more particularly to means whereby an original sheet and a record sheet, may be fed concomitantly, and the original sheet may also be fed separately or independently of the record sheet as may be desirable for example, in making condensed records. v
For various kinds of work it is customary to provide a series of blank forms, such as bills, checks, or the like, arranged in a long sheet or continuous web to be fed over the platen of a typewriting machine to permit typewritten entries to be made on said forms. A record sheet or web, together with a carbon sheet may be placed on the machine with the original sheet comprising the blank forms, the original and record sheets being advanced together as the platen is rotated in the course of making the typewritten enor outer web may, at a single operation, be

Itis desirable that the original sheet may then be advanced separately from the record sheet to bring a succeeding blank form into position to receive the first typewritten entry thereon, while the record sheet remains at rest, so that the typewritten records of the entries onthe several bills or the like are close together or condensed on the record sheet and thereby economize space.
The present invention provides improved means for effecting these operations, and further provides means whereby the original advanced to position a new blank form to receive the first line of writing after the entries on the preceeding form have been completed.
The record sheet may be fed over the platen by feed rolls running on the platen usual line spacing mechanism. In order that the original sheet may be further advanced independently of the record sheet, a hand operated driver is provided, which is operable through a suitable train of gears to drive said feeding couple, said driver also operable through suitable means to automatically disconnect said feeding couple from the platen, so that the latter together with the record sheet, remains at rest while the driver operates the feeding couple to advance the original sheet.
It is desirable that the driver at each operation shall move the original sheet, forward just the distance required to position a new blank form for being written upon, and as this distance depends upon the distance the sheet has been advanced during the writing of the entries on the preceding form, suitable means are provided to regulate the extent of operation of the feeding couple at each operation of the driver to effect said result. That is to say, the invention provides means whereby the extent of rotation of the feeding couple at each operation of the driver is complemental to the distance the platen has been rotated during the writing of the bill or form that has just been completed. The mechanism for effecting this result is in some respects similar to that disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 827,539.
The driver may comprise a crank loosely mounted on a drive shaft and having a pawl to drive a ratchet-wheel fixed to said shaft, the latter being connected through a gear train to drive the auxiliary feed rolls. The driver may have a uniform throw at each operation between fixed stop positions. While the platen is being rotated to feed the original and record sheets, the auxiliary feed rolls, driven from the platen as above noted, operate through said gear train to rotate said shaft and ratchet-wheel a correspond ing distance while the driver remains at rest. During such rotation of the ratchet-wheel, an interponentdisk frictionally driven with the ratchet-wheel, is brought to an interme diate position, determined by the extent of the rotation of the platen. When the driveris operated it first, breaks the connection between the platen and the auxiliary feed rolls so that the platen remains at rest during the entire throw of the driver. The latter then moves idly until a notch in the interponent disk permits the pawl and the driver to engage the ratchet-wheel and drive the latter during the remainder of the throw of the driver, thereby operating the feeding couple and advancing the original sheet. As the distance through which the driver moves idly is measured by the extent the platen has.
been rotated, the extent of rotation of the auxiliary feed rolls will be complemental to said distance so that the total advance of the ori inal sheet by the platen and the driver will be the same for each complete operation.
The auxiliary feed rolls for the original sheet may be located in advance of the printing line and may be separated to permit the work to be readily adjusted therebetween. To permit such separation, one roll may be mounted on a swinging frame comprising arms journaled on the platen frame ends.
The throw of the driver maybe regulated by an adjustable stop to correspond with the length of the individual forms in use on the machine. In order to prevent overthrow of the feed rolls when actuated by the driver, the latter may be provided with a latch to engage said adjustable stop'and thereby be wheel and associated parts, the driver being at the limit of its driving stroke.

The roller platen 12 is mounted on an axle 13 journaled in the platen frame ends 14 and 15. A paper table 16 extending upwardly and rearwardly at the introductory side of the platen may form. part ofthe platen frame. The platen may be rotated by hand wheels 17 secured to the ends of the platen axle. Line spacing mechanism for rotating the platen step by step, may comprise a line spacing lever 18 pivotally mounted at 19 on the carriage 20 and comprising an arm 21 to drive rearwardly a slide bar 22. A dog 23 pivoted on the slide bar 22 drives a line space ratchet-wheel 24 secured to the platen axle, and thereby rotates the platen. An adjusting lever 25 may, through the usual means, vary the point at Y which during the throw of the driver 22, the
dog engages the ratchet-wheel, and thereby vary the distance through which the platen is rotated at a line spacing operation. The above described parts may be those usual in the commercial Underwood typewriting machine.
Front and rear feed rolls 26 and 27 bear against the under surface of the platen and cooperate therewith to feed work pieces around the platen. These rolls are preferably located adjacent the ends of the platen to engage the side margins only of a record sheet to advance it over the platen, while the space between the rolls accommodates a narrower original sheet which at times may be fed independently of, or relatively to the underlying record sheet, as will appear more fully hereinafter.
Paper guiding fingers 28 are mounted on a rod.29 extending parallel with the platen and secured at its ends to the platen frame ends. The fingers 28 extend-downwardly in front of the platen to guide the record sheet as it moves upwardly past the printing line, and are provided with feed rolls 30 to bear on the platen. The fingers 28 are adjustable lengthwise to the platen and are designed to engage the side margins of an underlying sheet 47. Means for feeding the outer or original work-piece 46 separately from the underlying record sheet may comprise auxiliary or special feed rolls 31 and 32 arranged to form a feeding couple or feeding couples located at a point above the printing line. The rolls 31 and 32 are mounted respectively on shafts 33 and 34. The shaft 33 may be mounted in the platen frame ends and the shaft 34 may be mounted to be moved outwardly to separate therolls 31 and 32 to facilitate the adjustment of the work therebetween. To this end the shaft 34 may form part of a swinging frame comprising end bars 35 and 36 mounted by pivots 37 and 38 respectively on the platen frame ends.
The frame may be swung outwardly by the handle 39 to separate the rolls 31 and 32, and is returned by a spring 40 which also maintains an operating pressure between the rolls. A brace rod 41 may connect the end bars 35 and 36. v
The shaft 33 forms a drive shaft for driving the feeding couples 31,- and 32 and may be driven from the platen through a gear train comprising a gear wheel 42 fixed to the platen to rotate therewith, a pinion 43 keyed to the shaft 33, and an intermediate pinion 44 meshing with the gear 42 and pinion 43. The peripheral speed, of the feed rolls 31 and 32 may be made either greater or less than that of the platen depending upon the diameter of said rolls and the proportioning ,of the gearing, so that the sheet fed by such rolls as the latter are driven from the platen may be caused to move as desired at either a greater or less speed than the underlying sheet fed directly by the platen. For example, the speed of the platen might be only one half that of the feeding couple 31, 32, where it is desired that the copy on the record sheet shall be closely line-spaced. As shown, the parts are so proportioned that both sheets will be fed at the same speed.
The mechanism as shown is particularly designed for use with work in which the,
original or outer sheet or work piece 46 consists of a series of blank forms such as bill heads or blank checks in the form of a continuous sheet or web, the individual forms being preferably separated by rows or perforations permitting each form to be removed as it is completed. For a clear understanding of the invention, the machine will be described as used with such original work-piece and a record sheet for receiving a condensed record of the entries on the original. v This original work-piece 46 is placed on the machine together with an underlying record sheet 47, a carbon sheet 48 being interposed between the webs 46 and 47 as indicated in Fig. 5. The record sheet 47 is of such width that its side margins are engaged by the platen feed rolls 26 and 27 and also by the rolls 30 on the paper fingers. The record sheet is thus fed directly by the platen and at the surface speed thereof.
The original sheet or web 46 may be narrower so that it lies within the s ace between the feed rolls 26 and is fe by the rolls 31 and 32. With this arrangement the original web may be fed simultaneously with the record web by means of the gear train 42, 43 and 44 as the platen is line spaced in the course of making typewritten entries on a bill or other form. After such entries have been completed it is desirable to advance the outer web to bring a succeeding bill or form into position to be written upon without advancing the record sheet, so that the record, of the typewritten entries on succeeding bills will be closely spaced or c'ondensed on the record sheet.- 7
To permit this independent advance of the original work piece, there is provided a hand crank or driver 50 and mechanism actuated thereby to disconnect the special feed rolls 31 and 32 from the platen and then rotate said rolls while the platen remains at rest. Such mechanism also includes means whereby, the extent of rotation of the feed rolls at each operation of the driver is automatically regulatedso that the original or outer work-piece is advanced the exact distance required to position a succeeding bill or form to receive the first typewritten entry thereon. The driver 50 is loosely mounted on a drive shaft 51 to oscillate between the stationary forward and rearward stops 52 and 53, and has a normal position of rest against the forward stop 52. The driver 50 comprises an arm extending radially from a disk 54 journaled on the drive shaft 51, said arm being provided at its outer end with a handle 55. The drive shaft 51 is mounted in an auxiliary frame on the platen frame end 15, said auxiliary frame comprising upright members 56 and 57. having openings in which the shaft is journaled. A gear wheel 58 keyed to the shaft 51 is in mesh with the pinion 44, the latter mounted on a stud 59 (Fig. 6) on a stationary arm 60 depending from the shaft 51. The drive shaft 51, together with the gear 58 and pinion 44, is movable endwise (by means hereinafter described) to move said pinion 44 into mesh with the gear wheel 42 on the platen so that the platen may, through the said pinion 44 and gear 58, drive the shaft 51. bered that-the pinion 44 operates through the pinion 43 to drive the feeding couple 31, 32. That is to say, the feeding couple 31, 32 is at all times geared to the drive shaft 51, so that'when said couple is driven by the platen, it rotates the shaft 5?1, but said couple may be driven bythe shaft 51 while disconnected from the platen. The purpose of this arrangement will be pointed out later. When the shaft 51 is shifted to the left the platen is connected through the pinions 44 and 43' (Fig. 7) to drive the auxiliary feed rolls 31 and 32 and also to drive the shaft 51 from the platen. When the shaft 51. is moved to the right to disengage 1 the gear 42 and pinion 44, (Fig; 8,) the feed independently of thefplaten while the latter is at rest.
The drive shaft 51 may be rotated by the driver 50 by means of a pawl or dog 62 mounted on the driver and movable thereon into and out of driving engagement with a ratchet-wheel 63 fixed to the drive shaft 51.

The plate 64 has a slot and pin connection 65 with the driver permitting radial movement of the pawl, and has a stem 66 guided in a lug 67 on the driver. A coil spring 66 on the stem 66 moves the pawl 62 radially inward to engage the ratchetwheel 63.
When the driver is moved rearwardly from its normal position of rest, (Fig. 10)
toward the stop 53, the pawl 62 may be held out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel during a portion of the driving stroke, by means of an interponent 68 shown as a disk loosely mounted on the shaft 51 and substantially the same diameter as the ratchet wheel, so that the periphery of the disk engages the pawl 62 and holds the latter out of driving engagement with the ratchet-wheel except when said pawl is brought into position to enter a notch 69 in the periphery of the disk thereby connecting the driver with the ratchet-wheel. It will be remembered that the platen as it is rotated in the course of making entries on a bill or work-piece, rotates the drive shaft 51, sothat the interponent disk 68, which is frictionally held against the ratchet-wheel to rotate therewith is advanced from its starting position (Fig. 10) as the platen rotates. The position of the notch 69 therefore corresponds to the extent the platen has been rotated. When 4 the entries on a bill have been completed, the
driver is thrown rearwardly to the Fig. 4 position. As the driver advances, the pawl 62 rides idly along the disk 68 until it reaches the notch 69 and snaps into engagement with the ratchet wheel, so that a connection is effected between the driver and the ratchet-wheel, and the drive shaft 51 is by the throw of the driver and is adjusted to correspond to the length of the work-forms. The length of throw of the driver may be adjusted by adjusting the stop 53. To permit such adjustment said stop is mounted on a disk 70 rotatable on the shaft 51. A holding pin 71 extending through the stop 53 is provided with a head 72 by which the pin may be withdrawn from engagement with a stationary holding plate 73. Said plate 73 is provided with an annular series of openings 74 into any one of which the pin 71 may be inserted to hold the stop 53.
The interponent disk 68 may be frictionally held to rotate with the ratchet wheel by When the driver is returned from the stop 53 to the stop 52, the interponent disk is returned with it as'the pawl 62, remains in the notch 69. Duringthis return movement the pawl rides idly over the ratchet Wheel, but is not moved upwardly a sufiicient distance to release the disk 68. As the driver 50 approaches the forward stop 52 in completing its return movement, a shoulder .77 (Fig. 6)
on the plate 64 rides upon a cam surface 78 on the plate 73, thereby moving the dog 62 radially outward to disconnect it from the ratchet wheel. As the interponent disk 68 completes its return movement a pin 79 thereon strikes the stop 52 and prevents overthrow of said disk. The forward rotation of the disk 68 may also be limited by a stop pin 80 on the disk in the path of the stop 52. Over-throw of the ratchet-wheel 63, as the driver completes its operating stroke, is prevented by a locking latch 81 connected by a pivot screw 82 to the driver. As the driver approaches the stop 53 the latch 81 strikes said stop and is thereby swung about its pivot so that a shoulder 83 thereon engages the lug 84 on the pawl 62 and locks said pawl in engagement with the ratchet-wheel, thus preventing the ratchet-wheel from being my tated beyond the position to which it is car platen to remain at rest while the feed rolls,
31, 32 are actuated by the driver. To permit a the shaft 51 to be thus disconnected, it is mounted for endwise movement in the fra e members 56, 57. The parts mounted on said shaft also partake of said endwise movement, such parts including the gear and pinion 58 and 44, the driver 50, ratchet-wheel 63, interponent 68, and a hand wheel 86. The hand wheel 86 is secured to the drive shaft and provides a convenient means for rotating the drive shaft and special feed rolls 31, 32 in either direction and desired extent independently of both the platen and the driver 50.
With the parts in their normal position of rest, the drive shaft 51 is held at the limit of its shifting movement to the left, as shown in Fig. 9, by means of a coil spring 87 (Fig. 9)
so that the pinion 44 meshes with the gear 42 on the platen. When the driver commences its driving stroke or rearward movement, a lug 88 thereon rides up an inclined cam surface 89 on a guide 90, and thereby cams the drive shaft and gearing thereon ea ers outwardly, or to the right, to. the Fig. 6 position.
The annular uide 90 is fixed on the frame member the latter being in the 5 form of an incomplete disk or segment.
The arm 60 carrying the pinion 44 has secured thereto a pin 91 extending-through an opening in the frame member 56 whereby said arm 60 is guided during the shifting of the drive shaft and is held against rota- As the driver 50 tionon the drive shaft. advances the lug 88 rides'along the guide 90 so that the drive shaft is held out of gear with the platen until the driver has 1 been returned to its starting position when ing sections connected by a pin 93 (Fig. 6).
The operation may be summarized as follows: The record sheet 46 and the carbon sheet 48 may be placed on the paper table 16 and moved forward between the platen and the feed rolls 27, 26 in the usual man ner to writing position. The original or outer web, comprismg a series of printed forms, is introduced between the paper ta-.
ble and the record sheet moved forward 30 around the platen; its forward end is then positioned between the feed rolls 31, 32 and the web adjusted to position the printed form for receiving the first typewritten en try thereon. The typewriting then proceeds 35 in an ordinary way, the line space lever-being operated after each line is written to space the work. As the drive shaft 51 is at this time geared to the platen it is rotated a step at each line space operation so that the interponent disk 68 thereon is advanced tion, determined by the distance the work form has been advanced from its initial po sition. The driver is now thrown rearwardly. At the commencement of this driving stroke, shaft 51 is shifted by the cam 50 89 to disengage it from the platen, and then moves idly forward until the pawl 62 reaches the notch 69 and is permitted to engage the ratchet wheel and during the remainder of the driving stroke rotates the 55 drive shaft, and through the gear train 58,
44, 43 rotates the feeding couple 31, 32. The stop 53 is adjusted to the length of the work form so that the driver, when arrested by said stop has brought a new work form into I position to recelve the first lme of wrltmg.
The operator nowreleases the driver permitting a coil spring 94 to return it to starting position. The spring 94 is located in a pocket provided by recesses in the opposing 55 faces of the disks 54 and 73. The ends of the spring are secured respectively to said disks. During the return to the driver the pawl 62 rides over the teeth of the ratchet wheel but remains in the notch 69 thereby. returning the disk 68. As the driver completes its return movement thecam 78 lifts the pawl free from the disk ratchet wheel.
It will be observed that the frame 56, 57 and the mechanism carried thereby may be quickly attached to, or removed from a standard machine. The other mechanism including the feed rolls 31, 32 and the frame 68 and the I carrying the roll 32 may also be readily a-ttached, so that the invention is well adapted to be applied to machines of standard make. Although the invention has been described as used for a particular kind of work, it will be understood that it is not limited to such use, but may be employed for a great variety of work.
It is to be noted that the drawings are somewhat diagrammatic and that the proportions of the various gears are to be such as to secure the proper extent of rotation of the several parts during the stroke of the driver 50, and it is also to be understood that the cam, lockin latch, stops, and other parts, are to be suitably timed to accomplish the purposes above set forth. The stop openings 74 and the teeth of the ratchet 63 are preferably spaced to correspond with the spacing of the line spacing ratchet. That is to say, the angular distance between adjacent teeth of the ratchet wheel or adjacent openings 74 is the distance through which the shaft 51 is driven to rotate the feeding couple 31, 32, the distance said couple is rotated at a line spacing operation.
The gear 44 may be enlarged as seen at 44 in Fig. 12 so that the top or original sheet will travel at a greater peripheral speed than the carbon copy. With this arrangement it will be seen that the spacing on the original sheet may be wider than the spacing on the copy thereby obtaining a condensed carbon copy. A device of this character may be seen in my application No. 838,634, filed May 15, 191.4.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of mechanism coeperating therewith to feed a work piece thereover through a predetermined fixed distance, including means for rotating the platen through a variable angle and thereby advancing the work piece a corresponding distance less than said fixed distance, and means operable at a single operation while the platen is at rest to advance the work piece through the remainder of said fixed distance.

3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of mechanism cooperating therewith to feed a work piece thereover through a predetermined fixed distance, including means for rotating the platen through a variable angle and thereby advancing the work piece a corresponding distance less than said fixed distance, and means operable at a single operation while the platen is at rest to advance the work piece through the remainder of said fixed distance, said last mentioned means comprising a manually operable driver arranged to move between fixed stop positions, and a stop by which one of said positions is determined, said stop adjustable to vary the throw of the driver, whereby said predetermined distance through which the work piece is advanced may be regulated.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of mechanism cooperating therewith to feed a number of work pieces concomitantly a variable distance, and means to feed one of said pieces while the other remains at rest, a distance determined by the distance through which the pieces were fed together.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and means to rotate it, of
sheet feeding mechanism operated by said means to advance a number of work sheets together a variable distance, a manually operable driver, and means actuated thereby to feed one of said sheets while the platen remains at rest, a distance complemental to the distance through which the sheet was moved during the rotation of the platen.v
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of means to rotate the platen, means operated when the platen is rotated by said first mentioned means to advance a work piece on the platen, and means to advance the work piece by a single operation while the platen is at rest, a. distance determined by the distance it has been ad vanced during said rotationof the platen.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, and means to rotate it, of mechanism operative by said means to advance a work piece on the platen, and means to advance the Work piece while the platen is at rest a distance determined by the distance work sheet was advanced by said rotation of the platen. e
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, means cooperating with the platen to feed a work sheet thereover when the platen is rotated, separate sheet feeding means driven from the platen to feed a second work sheet, a manual driver, and means operated thereby to disconnect said separate feeding means from the platen and feed said second work sheet while the platen remains at rest. p
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, means cooperating with the platen to feed a work sheet thereover when the platen is rotated, separate sheet feeding means driven from the platen L to feed a second work sheet, a manual driver, and means operated thereby to disconnect said separate feeding means from the platen and feed said second work sheet while the platen remains at rest, and means to automatically return the driver and restore the driving connections between the platen and said separate feeding means.
11 In'a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of feed rolls running thereon to feed a work sheet over the platen, a feeding couple separate from the platen, gearing by which the feeding couple is driven from the platen for feeding a second work sheet concomitantly with the feeding of the first work sheet, a driver to actuate said feeding couple, and means to disconnect said couple from the platen and permit it to be operated by driver while the platen is at rest.
12. In a'typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of feed. rolls running thereon to feed a work piece over the platen, a feeding couple separate from the platen, gearing by which the feeding bination with a platen and a plurality of feeding means each operable to advance a work sheet over the platen, means forming a driving connection between said feeding means whereby they are operated concomitantly to feed the work pieces, means to break said connection and operate one of said feeding means singly, and means automatically set during the concomitant feeding of the work pieces to determine the distance through which'said last work piece will be fed singly.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of feed rolls cooperating therewith to feed a work piece over the platen, a feeding couple separate from the platen for feeding a second work piece, a gear train between the platen and said feeding couple for actuating the latter as the platen is rotated, a drive shaft, earing connecting the drive shaft to the eeding couple whereby said shaft is rotated from the platen, a driver to actuate said drive shaft and thereby actuate said feeding couple, and means controlled by said driver to disconnect the feeding couple from the platen while maintaining the driving con nection from the driver to the feeding couple, whereby the latter is actuated by the driver to feed said second work piece while the platen and the first mentioned work piece remain at rest.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of feed rolls cooperating therewith to feed a Work piece over the platen, a feeding couple separate from the platen for feeding a second work piece, a gear train between the platen and said feeding couple for actuating the latter as, the platen is rotated, a drive shaft, gearing connecting the drive shaft to the feeding couple whereby said shaft is rotated from the platen, a driver to actuate said drive shaft and thereby actuate said feeding couple, means controlled by said driver to disconnect the feeding couple from the platen while maintaining the driving connection from the driver to the feeding couple,
whereby the latter is actuated by the driver to feed said second work piece while the platen and the first mentioned Work piece remain at rest, and means to determine the distance through which the feeding couple is rotatable by a single operation of driver, said distance being c'omplemental to the distance through which the feeding couple is rotated from the platen.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of feed rolls cooperating therewith to feed a work piece over the platen, a feeding couple separate from the platen for feeding a second work piece, a gear train between the platen and said feeding couple for actuating the latter as the platen is rotated, a drive shaft, gearing connectin the drive shaft to the feeding couple where y said shaft is rotated from the platen, a driver to actuate said" drive shaft and thereby actuate said feeding couple, means controlled by said driver-to disconnect the feeding couple from the platen while maintaining the driving connection from the driver to the feeding couple, whereby the latter is actuated by the driver to feed said second work piece while the platen and the first mentioned work piece remain at rest, a gage to determine the distance through which the driver is operative to drive said feeding couple, and means actuated by the platen to automatically set said gage.
18. The combination with a rotary platen, of work sheet feeding mechanism comprising means to feed a work sheet over the platen when the latter is rotated, a drive shaft, a driver loose on said shaft, a ratchet wheel connected to rotate with said shaft, a
dog on said driver to drive the ratchet wheel, and means driven by said shaft to advance the work sheet'while the platen is at rest.
19. The combination witha rotary platen, of work sheet feeding mechanism comprising means to feed a work sheet over the platen when the latter is rotated, a drive shaft, a driver loose on said shaft, a ratchet wheel connected to rotate with said shaft, a dog on said driver to drivethe ratchet Wheel, a driving connection between the platen and said shaft for causing the platen to rotate said shaft, a gage frictionally driven with said shaft and holdin said dog out of engagement with the ratchet wheel while the shaft is driven by the dependently of said shaft, ratchet wheel connected to rotate with said shaft, a dog on the driver to engage said ratchet wheel, an interponent between the dog and ratchet 'platen, a driver mounted for rotation inwheel frictionally held for rotation with the ratchet wheel as the platen rotates and holding the dog away from the ratchet wheel. and means operated by the driver to disconnect the platen from said feeding means. said interponent formed to permit the dogto engage the ratchet wheel when the driver has been moved to a position varying with the position to which the platen has been rotated, the driver being operative, during the remainder of its throw to actuate said feeding means while the platen remains at rest.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a drive shaft, work piece feeding means arranged to be driven by said shaft, line spacing mechanism, gearing between said mechanism and said shaft for driving the latter and operating said feeding means when the line spacing mechanism is ope ated, a driver to rotate the drive shaft. and means actuated by the-driver to disconnect said feeding means from the line spacil'lg mechanism and permit said feeding means to be actuated by the driver independently of the line spacing mechanism.
22. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a drive shaft, work piece feeding meansarranged to be driven by said shaft, line spacing mechanism, gearing between said mechanism and said shaft for driving the latter and operating said feeding means when the line spacing mechanism is operated, a driver to rotate the drive shaft, means actuated by the driver to disconnect said feeding means from the line spacing mechanism and permit said feeding means to be actuated by the driver independently of the line spacing mechanism, means to limit the throw of the driver, the latter being normally at rest while the drive shaft is rotated by the platen, and a gage automatically adjusted during the rotation of the platen to variably determine the extent of operation of said feeding means at each operation of the driver.
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a drive shaft, work piece feeding means arranged to be driven by said shaft, line spacing mechanism, gearing between said mechanism and said shaft for driving the latter and operating said feeding means when the line spacing mechanism is operated, a driver to rotate the'drive shaft, means actuated by the driver to disconnect said feeding means from the line spacing mechanism and permit said feed-' ing means to be actuated by the driver 1ndependently of the line spacing mechanism, means to limit the throw of the driver, the latter'being normally at. rest While the drive shaft is rotated by the platen, and an interponent between the driver and said shaft by which the driver is held out of driving movable with the shaft as the latter is 210mb ated by the platen and forming a gageadjusted by said rotation of the platen to a position corresponding to the extent of said rotation, said interponent permitting the driver during its throw to be connected with the drive shaft at a point corresponding to said adjustment of the gage.
24. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of feed rolls running on the platen, line spacing mechanism to 1'0- tate the platen, a feeding couple, a gear train connecting said feeding couple to be driven by the platen separate driving means for said couple comprising a drive shaft geared to said couple, a driver normally disconnected from said shaft and at rest during the rotation of the shaft by the platen, said driver having a. limited throw, and means controlled by the driver to disconnect the platen from said feeding couple and then connect the drive shaft to actuate said feeding couple while the platen remains at connect the drive shaft'ito actuate said feed-,
ing couple while the. platen remains at rest, and means set by the platen to control the extent of rotation of the feeding couple by the driver.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of feed'rolls running on the platen, line spacing mechanism to rotate the platen, a feeding couple, a gear train connecting said feeding couple to be driven by the platen, separate driving means for said couple comprising a drive shaft geared to said couple, adriver normally disconnected from said shaft and at rest during the rotation of the shaft by the platen, stops to limit the throw of the driver, the driver having a limited movement free from the said shaft, and a gage to determine the position at which the driver during its throw is connected to the drive shaft, said gage set by the platen so that the distance through which the feeding couple is actu ated by the driver is complemental to the distance through which said couple is actuated by the platen, one of said stops being adjustable to vary distance through which naaassa the feeding couple may be actuated during the successive operations of the platen and driver.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a drive shaft to rotate the platen, a ratchet wheel on said a shaft, a driving crank loose on the shaft,
a dog on said crank to drive the ratchet wheel, a stop to limit the throw of the crank,
and arlocklng latch carried by said crank,
- gagement with the ratchet, and a stop to limit the throw of the driver, said stop being in the path of the locking latch and arranged to swing said latch into position to lock the dog to the ratchet and thereby prevent overthrow of the drive shaft.
29. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and work sheet feeding means, of a gear train between the platen and said means for driving the latter: when the platen is rotated, a drive shaft on which a gear of said train is mounted, a driver to rotate said shaft, and a cam in the path of said driver operable when said driver is rotated to shift the driver and said shaft and thereby move the gear on said shaft out of driving engagement with the platen to permit the platen to remain at rest while the driver rotates said shaft and drives said feeding means.
30. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and work sheet feeding means, of a gear train between the platen and said means for driving the latter when the platen is rotated, a drive shaft on which a gear of said train is mounted, a driver to rotate said shaft, a ratchet wheel connected to said shaft, a dog on the driver to drive said ratchet, said driver having a limited idle movement, and a cam operable during said idle movement to shift the driver and said shaft and thereby disconnect said shaft from the platen, said driver operable after the driver is thus disconnected to drive said feedin means.
31. n a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a work sheet feeding couple, a train of gears connecting the platen to said couple, a shaft to which one of the gears of said train is attached, said shaft mounted for endwise movement to disconnect said gear from the platen while maintaining a drivin connection between said gear and the fee ing couple, a driving crank mounted on said shaft, a spring to hold the said shaft normally in position to maintain said driving connection from the platen to the feeding couple, a cam in the path of the driver by which the latter when rotated is moved in a direct-ion to shift said shaft to disconnect the platen from'the feed ing couple, and an annular guide by which the driving crank and shaft are held in said disconnected position during the rotation of the driving crank.
32. In a typewriting machine, the combina tion with a rotary platen, of feed rolls running thereon in position to engage the side margins of a work piece to feed the latter over the platen, separate feeding means positioned and arranged to engage and feed an overlying sheet extending over the platen in the space between said feed rolls, mechanism to drive said separate feeding means from the platen, and means operable at will to drive said separate feeding means independently of the rotation of the platen.
33. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of feed rolls running thereon in position to engage the side margins of a work piece to feed the latter over the platen, separate feeding means positioned and arranged to engage and feed an overlying sheet extending over "the platen in the space between said feed rolls, mechanism to drive said separate feeding means from the platen, means operable at will to drive said separate feeding means independently of the rotation of the platen, said last mentioned means comprising a driver, and means operated thereby to disconnect said feeding means from the platen, said driver being normally at rest during the operation of said feeding means from the platen.
34. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of feed rolls arranged to run thereon and positioned to engage the side margins of a work piece to feed the lat ter over the platen, a feeding couple positioned to feed an overlying work piece eX- tending over the platen in thejspace between said marginal feed rolls, a gear train connecting the platen with said feeding couple whereby when the platen is rotated said work pieces are fed concomitantly, a driver arranged to operate said feeding couple, and means actuated by the driver to disconnect the feeding couple from the platen whereby said couple is rotated by the driver independently of the platen to advance the said overlying Work piece while the underlying work piece is held stationary.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of feed rolls arranged to run thereon and positioned to enindependently of the platen to advance the said overlyingwork piece while the underlying work piece is held stationary, said driver being normally at rest and (liscon nected fro-1n the platen and said feeding couple while the latter is driven by the platen, said driver having a limited throw, and means set by the platen to hold the driver out of driving engagement with the feeding couple during a portion of its throw corresponding to the extent of rotation of the feeding couple by the platen, so that the distance through which the overlying work piece is fed by thedriver is complemental to the distance it is fed by the platen.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen frame and a roller platen journaled therein, of a feeding couple comprising feed rolls located in front of the platen above the printing line, roll shafts on which the rolls are mounted, one of said shafts journaled in the platen frame ends, the other roll shaft arranged to swing forward to separate the feeding couple, and a swinging frame in which said last-mentioned shaft is mounted, said frame com-- prising arms pivoted to the platen frame ends in front of the platen and below the printing line and extending upwardly from their pivots, said last-mentioned shaft mounted in said arms.
37. In a typewritin machine, means for advancing one work-s eet through a movement of mechanically-prodetermined extent,
and a second work-sheet through an accom-. panying movement of indeterminate extent, including line-spacing mechanism and means connected thereto for advancing said sheets simultaneously, and also including means whose operation is pre-limited, for effecting the final instalment of movement of the first sheet.
38. In a typewriting machine, the combination of means for advancing a work-sheet in instalments through amovement of fixed extent, including line-spacing mechanism and a feeding device having a fixed cycle of movements and controlled thereby for mak ing the initial instalments; and means con-. trolled by said line-spacing mechanism for simultaneously advancing a second worksheet; the means for advancing said first work-sheet to said fixed extent also including a driver connected to operate said feed ing device to make the final instalment of said fixed cycle of movements of said feeding device while said second sheet remains stationary.
39. The combination with a revoluble platen to carry an outer sheet or web and an inner or record sheet, of means for advancing the outer sheet in instalments through a movement of fixed extent, including a feeding device having a fixed cycle of movements and line-spacin mechanism controlling the'same for ma ing the initial instalments, said platen controlled by said line-spacing mechanism for simultaneously line-spacing said innersheet; said advancing means also including a driver to make the final instalment of movement of said feeding device and said outer sheet while said platen and said inner sheet remain stationary.
40. In combination, means, including two revoluble feeding devices, for advancing a work-sheet in instalments through a movement of fixed extent, one of said'feeding devices comprising a platen to carry the work-sheet, and the second of said feeding devices including a member having a fixed cycle of movements, a single line-s acing mechanism controlling both of said eedin devices, and a driver havin means to a Vance said second feeding device to effect the final instalment of movement thereof and of the work-sheet, independently of the platen.
41. In combination, means, including two revoluble feeding devices, for advancmg a work-sheet in instalments through a movement of fixed extent, one of said feeding devices comprising a platen to carry the work-sheet, and the second of said feeding I devices including a member having a fixed cycle of movements, a single line-ipacing mechanism. controlling both of said eeding devices, and adriver having means to disconnect said second feeding device from.

42. In a. typewriting machine, the combination with means to carry outer and inner. work-sheets, of means for advancing the outer of said work-sheets in instalments through a movement of fixed extent, in-
cluding (.1) line-spacing mechanism for making the initial instalments; means being controlled 'by said line-spacing mechanism for simultaneous] work-sheet at "a 'iferent speed from the outer sheet; and also including (2) a driver and means coiiperatin therewith for making a final mechanical -determined instalment of movement of t e outer sheet while said inner sheet remains stationary.

In combination, means, including two revoluble feeding devices, for advancing-a work-sheet in instalments through a movement of fixed extent, one of said feeding devices comprising a platen to carry both said work-sheet and a second work-sheet, and line-spacing mechanism for said platen; and the other of said feeding devices comprising (1) a feeding device having a cycle of movements of-fixed extent and geared to said platen to rotate therewith, and to advance the first work-sheet at a diiferent speed from the second, and also including (2) a driver having means to disconnect said-second feeding device from the platen and advance said second feeding device to effect the final mechanically-determined instalment of movement of the first sheet, while the platen and the second sheet remain stationary.
45. In a typewriting machine, means for advancing one work-sheet through a movement of mechanically-predetermined extent, and another work-sheet through an accompanying movement of indeterminate extent, including line-spacing mechanism and means connected thereto for advancing said sheets simultaneously at difierent speeds, and also including means whose operation is pre-limited, for effecting the final instalment of movement of the first sheet.
