To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, MARION ALLEN RADER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, in the countyv of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented anew and useful Door-Latch, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention appertains to latches, and has for vits object the provision of a door latch of novel and improved construction.
This invention resides in the provision of. a latching device ofI unique construction, whereby the reciprocation of a spindle is utilized for turning a latch bolt to one position or the other in order that it may be forced against its spring when the door is pulled or pushed open.
The invention embodies a latch bolt which is mounted for both rotatory and sliding movements, and which is normally projiected under the influence of a spring, the spindle being slidable through the door, and the spindle and latch Ibolt having cooperating means whereby when the spindle is slid properly for opening the door, the latch bolt will be rotated so that it may readily be disengaged from the keeper when the door is pulled or pushed open by the spindle or knobs carried thereby.
It is the object of the invention to provide a door latch of the nature indicated, em bodving a novel assemblage of the component parts, wherebv the efficiency and utility of the deviceis enhanced, and in order that `the device is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, may be readily installed upon a door,`and will ffectively serve its oiiice.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a horizontal section through the device, taken on the line 1--1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 ofFig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, there is employed a tubular casing 1 which is fitted in a bore or circular mortise 2 drilled in the free edge portion of the door 3, the casing 1 having a reduced inner end portion 4, and having a Hangeor plate at its outer end or mouth which is adapted to rest against the free edge of the door. y
A latch bolt 6 of circular cross section vis mounted snugly within the casing 1 for both rotatoryand reciprocatory movement, and is provided with a reduced inner end portion 7 projecting into the reduced portion 4 of the casing to coperate with a coiled wire expansion spring 8 disposed within the said portion 4 of the casing. The spring 8 bears at one end against the inner end of the casing, and a headed bearing member 9 is litted within the other end of the spring 8 and bears against the pointed end of the endl 4portion 7 of the latch bolt, whereby the latch bolt may turn easily within its casing. The spring 8 tends to project the latch bolt, but notwithstanding this, the latch bolt may turn readily within the casing.
The latch bolt 6 has a reduced outer end portion 10 which passes slidably through an aperture 11 provided in a face plate 12 resting against the iange or` plate 5, screws or other securing elements 13 being engaged through the plates 12 and 5 for clamping them against the free edge of the door. The reduced outer end portion 10 of the bolt in passing through the restricted aperture 11 will prevent the excessive outward ment of the latch boltsince the latch bolt will seat against the plate 12 whichjgcts as a stop, the latch bolt 6, however, being readily removable'vhen the plate 12 is removed. The end portion 10 of the latch bolt.l has an oblique cam face 14 to engage and coperate with the keeper 15 carried by the jamb 16 of the door frame or casing. I
The door 3 is provided with a second bore 17a drilled therethrough from one side to the other adjacent and between the .ends Iof the bore 2, and' the spindle 17, extends through the bore 17a .outside of thejgcasing 1 whereby the spindle may be reciprocated from one side to the other. The casing 1 is provided with an opening or cut away portion 18A adjacent thevbore 17*l and'lreceiving Vthe longitudinal rack 18 carried by the spindle 17. The latch bolt 6 is provided with a f gear or toothed portionv 19 intermeshing with elements 21 to the opposite sides of the-door 10 the rack 18, whereby When the spindle is reciprocated, the bolt 6 will be rotated.`
As ameans forslidablysupporting thespindle 17,` guide iplates or disks l20 are'secured 'by meanso screws or other seeming and have central instruck tongues 22 :providing apertures throughwhich the spindle is-slidable snugly, the tongues 22 bearing upon that side of the spindle opposite the rack 18 in order 4to hold the rack inproper engagement with the gear 19.

, end portion of the spindle, while a similar knob or handle 24 is secured upon the other end portion of the spindle.
A plate or disk 25 is secured to one side of the door and. has a depression26 receiving the respective disk 20, the samescrews 21 which secure said disk 20 to the door being employed for securing the plate '25 thereto.
-The plate 25 has an outstandingneck or collar 27 surrounding the spindle, and a sleeve v28 is slipped onto the hub 29 of the knob 24,
and is secured thereon by the same screw 30 that isV employed for fastening the hub 29 upon the spindle. The sleeve 28 fits telescopicallykor slidably' 'over the neck or collar 27, and the said sleeve and neck providea housing inclosing a coiled wire expansion spring 31 which surrounds the spindle and which bears against the hub 29 of the knob 24 and the respective ldisk 20. 'The spring` 31 moves the knobs 23 and 24 toward and away from 'the door, respectively, when the spindle is released, and which will rotate the latch bolt to normal position, as seen in -full lines Fig. 1.
Supposing the door to be opened with the spindle released, the spindle will be moved under the influence of its spring 31 to norl" mal position. as seen in .full lines in Fig. 1, and this will rotate and hold the latch bolt at such a position, that it may readily snap into engagement with the keeper 15 when I `the door is closed. To open the door, either the knob 23' is pulled away from thedoor, or the knob 24 is pushedl toward the door, which will cause the spindle 17 tobeslid through the door, and asa consequence, the
latch bolt 6 will be rotated through one-half revolution to reverse the position of the cam face 14. The latch bolt 6 will therefore readily disengage the keeperl when lthe Y door 1s forced open, the latch bolt` `Gbeing forced inwardly against 4the tensionV of its spring 8.
