WINDOW-BEAD menace.
. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 1131328, 1916,
Original application filed Febrwiary'lG, 1915, Serial Ito/8,485. Divided and this application filed July 23,
1915. Serial No. 41,489.
To a l whom it may concern Be it known that ,I, MnNzoM. BENS'IfER, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Gettysburg, in the county of Potter and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Bead Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in windows and more particularly to window beads and fasteners, the present application being a division of my application for patent for windows, Serial No. 8,485, filed February 16, 1915, and has for its object to PTO. vide improved means for permitting the ready removal of window sashes and for holding them in place in operable position.
My invention consists in certain features of construction, arrangement, and combination of window beads and their fastening means as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the application, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a portion of window frame showing my improved bead fastening means. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bead removed from the window frame. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a sash runner used in connection with my bead. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the spring actuated locking pin.
In carrying out my invention in connection with a frame and sash as indicated by A and K a guide strap E is also used which lies against the inner side of the frame abutting at one end the rib is of the sash as clearly shown in Fig. 1; said guide strip E is provided with slots 6 adjacent its upper and lower ends to receive the headed spring bolts F fitted in the tubes F secured in the frame near its upper and lower ends, a coiled spring F surrounding the shank of each bolt and bearing at one end against shoulder on the bolt and at the opposite end against the inner end P of the tube; the shank f of the bolt which is reduced is threaded at its free end where it passes through the inner end of the tube and a nut f is threaded thereon whereby the amount of the part of the bolt projecting fro-m the tube may be regulated according to varying thickness of beads and runner strips; an angled shelf f is secured to the inner face of the frame adjacent the tube and the nut f and forms a placed in its proper relation thereto the openings e are in alinement with the open ings f so that the bolt heads F may pass through both members E and F the head being of such size that it just passes through openings F in the plate F secured to the bead F; the head of each bolt is beveled on its rear face so that when the latch F frictionally mounted on plate F is swung upwardly and to the left, the cut out or slot f will pass over the bolt and engage the said rear face with a wedging action drawing the parts tightly together so as to exclude all wind and dust; or the latch itself may be beveled.
It will be seen that the sashes can be readily and quickly removed by simply releasing the latch first, removing the bead and then taking out the strip E whereupon the lower or inner sash can be easily taken out of the frame and into the room, the upper sash can then be removed by removing a parting strip D between the two sashes.
I claim 1. In a window construction, the combination of a spring actuated headed bolt mounted in a side beam of the frame at the inside thereof, of a window bead having an opening to pass over said headed bolt, a latch pivoted at one end to said bead adjacent the opening and having a slot in oneedge adapted to pass beneath the head of said spring actuated bolt to fasten the bead in place.
2. A window bead and fastener consisting of a bead having an opening therethrough, a spring actuated headed bolt adapted to pass through said opening, the rear face of the bolt head being beveled, and a latch pivotally mounted on said bead adjacent the aforesaid opening, said latch having a notch in one side edge adapted to pass on each side of the bolt and permit the latch to engage the beveled rear face of the bolt head with a wedging action to hold the bead tightly to its place.
3. In a window bead fastener for window frames, the combination with a bead having an opening therethrough, a spring actuated headed bolt carried in the casing and adapted to pass through said opening, and
means for regulating that part of the bolts the opening in the bead and threaded at a the inner end'and projecting throughthe tubular socket into the Window casing,- and a'nut engaging said threaded end, a latch pivotally mounted on the bead adjacent the 1 opening, said latch having a notch infone edge adapted to engagethe bolt beneath its head. a
