HOSE-CLAMP VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
Application filed June 15, 1915. Serial Ito/34,152.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose-Clamp Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vises and consists in improvements therein designed par ticularly for adapting the Vises of my invention to be used in the operation of tightening the standard types of one piece sheet metal hose clamps. As is well known, the band of a clamp of the type referred to is slotted at each side; by the forming of an integral tongue at one side and at the opposite sideto provide an opening for the end of the tongue. y i i An important feature of myinvention resides in an improved form of vise jaw which is adapted to engage the ordinaryclamp which has no special provision therefor, as
the shoulders aforesaid. Tothat end I have devised 'a vise jaw of peculiar form to effect engagement with the clamp within the slots thereof, for this purpose having a shoulder formed thereon to fit into the slot of the clamp andengage the wall thereof. My improved arrangement is thus suited to engage the clamps of standardform and.
furthermore the means of engaging the clamps so provided performs an additional important function of rigidly holding. the
clampin proper alinement with the jaws against any tendency to twist when subjectedto the tightening pressure.
The described and other features of myimproved vise are shown in the accompany- 4. bottom plan view f bersdetached.
ing drawing wherein. the reference characters of this description are applied to like parts in the several views;
In the drawing Figural is aview in side elevation vof a vise embodying the teatures of my invention and illustratingthe hose clamp in position to be tightened thereby, thehose clamp being shown in section.
.7 F g. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig.1 as viewed from the under side.
Fig. .8 illustrates the vise in vertical cross section on line133 of Fig. l and Figs. 4 and 5.are respectively an end elevationjand aperture in its supporting one of, the .jaw mam-z i tightening llO'S clamps 0f the general type The construction here shown embodies the bearing and supporting frame 1 of angular form having the base portion 2 and the oppositely arranged arms or uprights 33. These arms support the stationary and movable jaw members 4 and 5 respectively, the former being secured to the arm by having a reduced shank 6 thereon fitted to an apperture in the arm. The movable jaw 5 is carried by a reciprocating slide 8 of angular form and fitted to a suitable bearing arm 3 so as to support the movable jaw in alinement with the opposite jaw 4. The movement of the slide 8 is controlled by the feed screw 9 journaled in the vertical arm of the slide and threaded to the supporting arm 3 whereby upon being rotated by means of lever pin 10, fitted to the. end thereof, it Will be moved to advance and retract the jaw 5 with reference to the co-acting jaw 42.
For supporting the hose clamp in position to be engaged by'thejaws I have provided an adjustable shelf or rest member 12 pivotally supported on pins 13 by the slotted supporting arms 14.1-i secured to the frame 1 by the clamping bolts 15 having nuts 16. The arrangement as described permits of adjusting the rest 12 to accommodateclamps of differentsizes.
The clamp, as shown, is'one of a standardcuring screw 20 having the securing nut 21 on its end as shown. The bandof the clamp is provided with the elongated slots 22-+23 at each sidewhich assist in gripping the hose and have the additional important functionof permitting the metal, in form-- ing the slot 22, to be bent inwardly to form the tongue 24 to span the space between the ends OftllB clamp so thatthe clamp when applied to the hose will engage it through outpits full circumference.
into the hose.
-As aforesaid, an important feature of my improved vise conslsts .in adapting it for The tip of thetongue 24, as shown. is received in the opposite slot '23 to the end that it shall, not bite beveled off at the end to each side of the center portion so as to form central shoulder 25 which is of a size to enter within the slots of the clamp as described. In so forming the shoulders, it will be seen that the beveled side portions 2626 will engage the peripheral surface of the clamps to bear thereon during tightening and maintain the proper engagement of the shoulder 25 with the clamp. The engagement of the jaw and the clamp as provided for bv the shoulders entering the slots, in accordance with my invention, possesses the additional advantage of securely holding the clamp from twisting sidewise when under pressure during tightening. The form of jaw shown will also permit of tightening the special forms of clamp wherein special lugs or shoulders are provided.
The manner of using my improved vise will be obvious from the foregoing description and it will be understood that upon tightening the clamp by means of the vise the clamping screw thereof is then screwed up to clamp it in position before the clamp is released by the retraction of the jaw 5. To give access to the screw 20 fortightening it with a screw driver I have formed the supporting arms 3-3 with recesses 28 on their upper surfaces as shown.
As many changes could be made in the above described construction without departing from the scope of my invention it is intended that all matter contained herein shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described mv invention, I claim,
