NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRIETTA O. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshall, in the county of Clark and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
1 My invention relates to non-refillable bott es.
The primary object of my invention is to providea non-refillable bottle wherein each of the operating parts is protected against accidental displacement or the likelihood of injury through contact with extraneous mat ter.
Another object of my invention resides in the simplicity of the device as a whole and in the durability and efficiency of the co acting parts.
With other objects in view, which will be referred to, my invention consists in the pe culiar combinationand novel adjustment of parts such as will be hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out by the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of my invention showing the neck and body portion of the bottle broken away in order to more readily illustrate the parts of my inventionwhen the bottle is in an upright position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my invention showing the neck and body portion of the bottle broken away to more readily illustrate the parts of my inventlon when disposing the bottle in such a position to allow egress of the contents therefrom. In 'orderto provide a seat for the ball valve 3 the neck of the bottle adjacent the body portion is slightly enlarged to form an 7 annular flange, as shown at 4: upon which ferred to.
enlargement the ball valve 3 seats itself when an attempt is made to refill the bottle; thereby adequately closing the neck against ingress of liquid after having once dispensed the contents of the bottle.
In order to prevent tampering with the ball valve 3 and to complement the said ball valve in acting its functions I provide a cylindrical stopper generally designated by 5, which cylindrical stopper is sealed'at its lower extremity as shown at 6 to prevent the ball valve 3 from passing into the interior thereof; A plurality of openings 7 are formed in the body portion of the stopper 5, to allow for the passage of fluid through said stopper when desiring to dispense the contents from the bottle.
In order to facilitate the flow of the liquid past the ball valve and into thestopper I have provided an enlarged opening in the neck designated by 8 so that the fluid may pass unretarded into the body portion of the stopper through the openings which are provided therefor; this opening also serves the dual function of providing a cavity into which the ball valve 3 is seated or retained when holding the bottle in a dispensing position. Adjacent the mouth of the bottle I provide a restricted portion 9 which is of substantially the same circumference as the cylindrical stopper before re- Upon disposing the stopper within the neck of the bottle the periphery of the body portion of said stopper engages with the wall of the restricted portion to provide a watertight closure. As a means for retaining the said stopper against extraction from the neck I provide a retaining spring 10 which is semicircular in-shape and has two upwardly bent ends'll, which ends upon disposition of the stopper within the body, spring into locking engagement with an annular flange 12 formed adjacent the mouth of the bottle, an annular semicircular recess 13 is provided in the cylindrical stopper for the retention, of the semicircular portion of the spring 10 to prevent extraction as before stated.
A modified form of my invention is shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings. In this particular embodiment I have shown the annular cut out portion 16 formed in the stopper 5 adjacent the upper termination thereof. Seated within this annular cut out portion 16 is a cylindrical collar 17 formed of metal and having a plurality of outstruck fingers 18 formed therein and having their points to extend in spaced relationship there around. In disposing the said stopper within the neck of my bottle these fingers 18 which are flared outwardly seat themselves against an annular flange 12 hereinafter mentioned to prevent the extraction of said stopper from within the neck of my bottle. The cylindrical stopper 5 is provided with a flared portion 1 1 which is normally seated upon the upper portion of the annularflange 12 to prevent disposition of the stopper too far within the neck of the bottle.
To assemble the various. parts of my invention, the liquid is first placed within the bottle and the ball valve 3 is disposed within the neck whereupon it seats itself upon the annular flange. The spring member 11 is then placed in position within the semicircular groove formed in the stopper. The stopper is forced within the neck of the bottle until the flared portion 14 engages the annular flange 12, theyends 11 of the spring member 10 will then spring into engagement with the flange12 thereby preventing the extraction of the stopper from the neck of the bottle.
In operation, should it be desired to dispense the contents of the bottle the cork 15 is extracted from the interior of the stopper and the bottle upturned as shown in Fig. 2
whereupon the ball valve will unseat itself and will travel to the position shown in Fig. 2 thus allowing the liquid to pass by the same and to have egress through the stopper by means of the opening 7 but, when it is desired to refill the bottle the ball valve will reseat itself as shown in Fig. 1 and absolutely preventing ingress'of liquid through the neck.
While I have shown and described only specific forms of my invention, I desire it to be understood that slight changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do'not wish to be limited except by such limitations as the claims may import.
I claimi 1. A bottle including a neck, a'valve' seat in said neck, a valve member in said-neck to operate 011 said seat, a shoulder projecting into the bore of said neck, a stopper carried in said neck, said stopper provided with a circumferential cut out, and a resilient strand having its intermediate portion seated in said out out and its terminal ends bent upwardly to engage with said shoulder to prevent removal of said stopper.
2. In a non-refillable bottle, the combination with a neck structure having a shoulder projecting into the bore thereof, a stopper in said neck structure having a circumferential cut out, and a valve to control ingress and egress through said neck, of a strand of wire havingits intermediate portion fitted in said out out and its terminal ends bent to engage with said shoulder to prevent removal of said stopper, as and for the. purpose specified.
3. In a non-refillable bottle, the combination with a neck structure having a'shoulder projecting into the bore-thereof, a hollow metallic stopper arranged in said neck, said stopper being open at its upper end and closed at its lower end,transverse apertures in said stopper in proximity to the lower end thereof, means carried, by I said; stopper to limit its inwardmovement with respect to said neck and a normally seated valve in said neck to control ingress and egress therethrough, of a strand of wire bent intermediate its ends to form an arcuate body, said stopper, provided with a semi-circular cut out to receive said arcuate body, and the terminal ends of said strand of wire beingbent to engage with said shoulder and prevent removal of said stopper, as and for the purpose specified.
4:. A bottle including a neck, the interior bore of said neck being constricted adjacent its connection with said bottle to form a valve seat, a ball valve arranged in said neck normally seating on the constriotedportion thereof, said neck provided with an inwardly projectingannular shoulder adjacent its upper end, the inner wall of said shoulder being cut slanting, a stopper positioned in said neck, said stopper being flared adjacent its upper end to engage the slanting face of said shoulder, said flared portion limiting the downward movement of said stopperin'said neck, said stopper being cut out circumferentially adjacent its upperend, and a single strand of wire having its intermediate portion bent to fit snugly in said cut-out and its t'erminals'upturned to bear against the under face of said shoulder to lock said stopper against removal substantially, as and for the purposes specified.
5. In a bottle, a ,neckrhaving a longitudi nal bore, a shoulder projecting into said bore adjacent the upper end of saidneck, said bore constricted slightly toward its lower end to form a valve seat, a valve to be normally seated in said'bore, a hollow cyline drical stopper positioned in'said neck,-said stopper being open atits' upper end and closed at its lower end, means to limit inward movement of said stopper, an annular ofl'set projecting'into the bore of said neck substantially intermediate its ends to engage with said stopper and prevent lateral movement thereof, said stopperi'provided' with openings adj aoent its lower end, the bore of said notched neck being enlarged opposite i their openings to form a fiuid space, said stopper provided with a cut out intermediate said shoulder and said oflset extending approximately half the circumference thereof, a strand having its intermediate portion shoulder to prevent removal of said stopper, as and for the purpose specified.
