To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Corona, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens andState of New York, have invented a new and Improved Self-Propelling -Hose-Nozzle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are :to provide a nozzle constructed to deliver a boring jet on a line substantially parallel with the axis of the nozzle to provide rearward openings, forming jets from said nozzle to propel the same by pressure against a volume of water in the rear thereof; and to provide means for varying the effectiveness of the rearwardly directed jets.

vention, it is found that the obstructive pressure referred to is totally avoided and that a propelling or drawing impulse is imparted to the nozzle and hose connected therewith, while performing to a marked degree. the scouring of the walls of the sewer pipe through which it is assing.
As seen in the drawings, a nozz e when constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, has a neck 7, the screw-threaded section a threaded end or nut 10 conventionally mounted thereon. The neck 7 is integrally formed with a balloon-shaped body 11, the

These In per I This practice has pressure applied to the hose 8 whereof is opera-v tively attached to a hose pipe 9 by meansof enlarged chamber 12 whereof is tapered forwardly to form a contracted passage 13 from which a jet is forcefully emitted, the object being to break down by the impact of water delivered from thehose pipe 9, any obstacle in the path of the nozzle and hose.
The chamber 12 is centrally bellied or spread to form arearwardly turned wall. This wall is pierced at several points to receive bushings 14, which are provided with screw threads and secured in the tapped holes formed in the body 11. The bushings 14 are centrally bored to form delivery paspassages as seen best in Fig. 2 of the drawings 'are so disposed as to give a rearwardly inclined direction to water leaving the chamber 12.
While I have herein described the'use of the bushings 14, it will be understood that I may dispense. with such and provide the body 11 with delivery apertures, -cast or otherwise formed therein. I prefer, however, to use the bushings 14, as by so doing, I may employ a number of bushings having different sized passages to form variously sized jets and in so doing change .the action of the nozzle to increase the speed ofpropulsion thereof at the expense of the scouring of the side walls of the sewer pipe, or to increase the effective scouring of the sewer pipe at the expense of the rapidity of travel of the nozzle.
Claim:
A hose nozzle comprising a transversely extended chambered body having forwardly and rearwardly faced walls; a propeller for moving said nozzle in'a forward direction,
'said propeller embodying openings in the rearwardly faced wall of said body for desisting'area of the material leaving said body.-
