HOSE NOZZLE.
Application led April 29, 1920. Serial N'o. 377,475.
To all wlmi/i, t may cmwern Be it known that I, SIDNEY C. SLAnnErI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose Nozzles, of which the followingr is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to rotate a nozzle of the character mentioned by the force of the operating stream therefor; and to avoid frictional resistance to the nozzle in its Inovement through the medium belng operated upon.
Drawings.
Figure 1 is a side view partly in section, of a nozzle constructed and arranged In accoi-dance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section of .the nozzle, the section being,r taken as on the line 2-2 1n Figure 1;
Figure El is a cross section of the nozzle,V
the section being taken as on the line 3-3 in Figure 1.
The present invention has for its object more particularly an improvement of the structure disclosed in the patent granted to John T. Burns March 21, 1916, and numbered 1,176.518. Nozzles constructed in conformity with the said patent have` one objection. in that they meet with resistance when driving through immobile substances, which resistance retards their forward move ment, caused by delivery of water under pressure from the rearwardly opening orifices provided in the nozzle.
Nozzles of the character mentioned constructed in accordance with the present invention avoid this pressure by rotating on their axis thereby shifting the point of contact with the resisting medium.
As seen in the drawings, a nozzle 1() is provided with a bulged body. to form an interior chamber 11. From the chamber 11 water is emitted by way of a contracted spout 12, and a series of propelling orifices 13. The orifices 13 in the present invention are extended through the wall of the bulged body of the nozzle 10. to project the water from the chamber 11 backward, and as nearly parallel with the throat 14 of the nozzle as is practical. The streams emitted from the orifices being larger in area, overcome the resistance of the-stream passing from the spout 12, and thus force the nozzle l() and parts connected therewith forward, in the direction of the stream emitted from the nozzle 12. To impart a rotary action to the nozzle 10, the orifices lil in the preferred form of the invention shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 are inclined somewhat from planes coincident with the axis of the neck 14. The same inclination beingr imparted to each of the orifices, the same rotary thrust is given to the nozzle which, while being forwardly propelled in the direction of the arrow a, is also rotatably propelled in the direction of the arrow b.
The nozzle 1() is operatively connected with a reducer connection 15, which is provided with a threaded section 16, for couplingr with a hose of any desired character and description. The nozzle is operatively connected with the reducer 15 by a coupler 17, the neck of which is threaded to engage the threads provided on the neck 18 of the nozzle. The lower end of the coupler 17 is ared to form a hell-like extremity 19. The extremity 19 is fiared to fit the reducer 15 at the central opening thereof, and to avoid the friction of the metallic connection a series of halls 2() is interposed between the walls of the reducer 15 and of the extremity 19.
Where it is desired a packing 21 is disposed in a groove formed adjacent the edge of the extremity 19. said packing resting normally against the surface of the reducer 15. The molded extremity 22 of the neck 18 is disposed adjacent to the edge of the opening in the reducer 15,to prevent the dislodgment of the extremity 19 from the wall of the reducer 15 to permit the escape of the balls 20 from service disposition.
From the foregoing it will he seen that when water is turned on to the hose with which the nozzle is connected, it is admitted to the chamber 11 of the nozzle 10. and from thence emitted. under pressure, from the spout 12. and the orifices 13. The pressure of the water passing from the orifices 13 is sufficient to propel the nozzle 10 and parts associated therewith forwardly. while revolving the said nozzle on the bearingr in the reducer 15 formed by the balls 20. Thus. if the nozzle 10 in boring through an obstacle, should become attached to the obstacle, the
twisting action provided for the nozzle would enable 1t to escape from the frlctlonal engagement.
Claims.

A nozzle as characterized comprising an enlarged head having a plurality of openings for discharge theiefroni, said openings being located at the rear of said head for delivering liquid which passes through said head to the rear thereof, and said openings being arranged whereby the passage of the liquid therethrough will impart an annular thrust to the nozzle and rotate the same.
2. A nozzle as characterized comprising an enlarged head having a plurality of openings for discharge therefrom, said openings being located at the rear of said head for deliverin liquid which passes through said head to tie rear thereof, and means for rotating the said nozzle, said means supplementxng said openings, said openings bein correspondingly inclined to the axis of sai nozzle to impart an annular thrust to said nozzle.
3. A nozzle as characterized comprising an enlarged head having a plurality of openings for discharge therefrom, said openings being located at the rear of said head for deliverin 'liquid which passes through said head to t ie rear thereof, and means for rotating the said nozzle, said means suppleinenting said openings, said openings being correspondingly inclined to the axis of said nozzle to impart an annular thrust to said nozzle, and means for connecting said nozzle in service to a hose, said means embodying a connection pivotally united to said nozzle.
4. A nozzle as characterized comprising an enlarged head having a plurality of openings for discharge therefrom, said openings being located at the rear of said head for delivering liquid which passes through said head to the naar thereof, means for rotating the said nozzle, said means supplementing said openings, said openings being correspondingly inclined to the axis of said nozzle to impart an annular thrust to said nozzle, means for connecting said nozzle in service to a'hose, said means embodying a connection pivotally united to said nozzle, and friction reducing devices interposed between said connection and said nozzle for reducing the resistance to the turning effort of the contents of said nozzle.
