EGG-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
i Application mea June 21, 1915. serial No. 35,399.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALLAN C. BUssnY, citizen of the UnitedStates, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State ofMinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Boxes, of which the following is a speciiication.-
The object ofiny invention is to provide a box of compact, durable construction in which a quantity of eggs can'be packed and shipped with perfect safety by express or parcel post and roughly handled in transportation without the slightest danger of breakage. Y Y
A further object is to provide al box of Vsimple construction and one in which there will be comparatively little waste of stock in the manufacture.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed ont in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the egg` box with the filler removed, Fig. 2 is a similar viewof the filler, Fig. 3 is a sectional view, taken on line -rc of Fig. 4, through a series of boxes, showing how they are packed, one upon another, in the egg case, Fig. 4 is a plan sectional view, taken on the line ye-g/ of Fig. 3, of the egg box, showing the relative arrangement of the egg pockets therein.
1n the drawing, the box is shown having upper and lower panels 2 and 3 in parallel relation to one another, 4and side walls L which hold the panels 2 and 3 in their proper position and support the boxes when piled one upon another. The box is open on two sides and has a flap 5 provided with a score line 6 extending longitudinally thereof and forming a tongue 7 or extension of the flap that is adapted to be inserted under the upper panel 2 when the flap is raised to close the opening'in the box. At each end of the flap 5 flaps 8 are formed which are folded inwardly and normally concealed by the flap 5 and operating to brace and strengthen Y the corners of the box. The upper panel has rows of openings 9 therein with tongues projecting into these openings and forming yielding seats for the eggs when thrust into the openings. The bottoni panel has a corresponding number of openings with tongues projecting therein. The rows of openings in the bottom panel are staggered with respect to those in the top panel and are consequently out of register with one another.
The filler comprises a plate 11 divided byV score lines 12 into a series of panels of equal size and when the plate or blank 11 is folded along these score lines a corrugated member will be formed, the corrugations on one side alternating with those on the other side and consequently, when the plate is thrust into the box, the corrugations on one side of the plate will register with openings in the panel of the box on that side, while the corrugations on the opposite side of the plate will register with the openings of the opposite panel, so that when the row of eggs are placed in the box, those fitting the openings in the top panel will be in staggered relation to those in the openings in the lower panel. The corrugated plate Vis provided with triangular flaps 13 at the ends of the egg pockets, said 'flaps being folded inwardly against one another between the walls of the pockets and serving to resist crushing strain and prevent the walls of the pockets from collapsing against one another and breaking the eggs fitting therein. These flaps are all alike and are folded inwardly upon one another into the ends of the pockets preparatory to thrusting it into the box.
From the foregoing it will be evident that three boxes will be necessary to properly cover and protect the eggs placed in the pockets of the middle box; that is, when the filler has been placed in the box, the ends of the eggs inserted into the pockets in the top panel will project above this panel and those inserted into the pockets of the lower panel will depend below itand a second box must be placed over the iirst one to receive the upper ends of the eggs in the top panel and a third box placed under the first one to receive the lower ends of the eggs in the lower panel. This will be continued until the desired number of boxes have been placed one upon the other. Usually these boxes will be placed in a suitable receptacle, such as a case 14, the boxes being fitted one upon another therein until the top of the case is reached.
It will be noted that the eggs are yieldingly supported by the tongues and held out of engagement thereby with the walls of the pockets and will be separated by the air space from the walls of the boxes so that pressure on these walls or a sudden blow thereon will not be `transmitted directly to the fragile egg shells but will be absorbed by the box walls and it will be practically inipossible to break the eggs in these boxes by Y ordinary handling in the mailsor express.
l claim as my invention: l.v An egg box comprising an upper and a lower panel having intermediate supporting walls, said panels having rows of openingstherein of vsuitable size to receive eggs, the rows of one panel being in staggered relation to the rows of the other panel, and a corrugated filler ittingbetween said panels Vand having V-shaped pockets, those on one rside of the iiller registering with the openings in one'panel and those on the other side ofthe filler registering with theopenings of the other panel. I A
Y 2. An egg box comprising an upper and a lower panel having intermediate supporting walls, said panels having rows of openings.
therein of suitable size to receive eggs, the
' Y rows of one panel being in lstaggered rela- Y and, supporting walls between them, said tion to the rows of the other panel, rand a corrugated filler fitting between said panels and having V-shaped'pockets, those on onev side of the filler registering withrthe openof the filler registering ywith the openings of the other panel, andlaps formed on the Walls ofthe pockets at the Vends thereof and folding Vinwardly upon .one another and bracing the pockets against external pressure;V
"3; An egg receptacle comprising a case, boxes fitting therein, one upon another, each box comprising an upper and a lower panel Copies of this patent may be obtained Vfor panels having rows of openings therein to receive the ends of theV eggs, the rows of openings ofVone-panel of aV box being in staggered relation to the corresponding rows of the other panel of thevsai'ne box, a
filler fitting within each 'box andprovided with a series of corrugations formingV shaped pockets, the pockets on one side of the liller registering with the openings in one panel and those on the other side of the filler registering with the openings offfthe` and tongues and iaps closingthe openings Y having upper andA lowerV panels and supporting walls on two sides between the' panels on `the other two sides,
said panels having openings therein to receive the ends of the eggs,'and filler plates fitting between said panels ,and Y' having ockets therein to register res Je'ctivel with P Y s Y Y the openings in said panels.
pAn egg-boxhaving upper and lower panels and supporting walls between them,
said panels having rows ofopeniiigs therein v i of suitablesize to receive eggs, the rows of l one panel being 1n staggered relation to the i rowsof the Vother panel, and a iiller tting Ywithin said box and having pockets upon opposite vsides thereof to register respecf tively with thefrows of openings-in' said v my hired this'lth day of Jim@ 1915.
