BLOW-OFF COCK FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Soorr MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blow-Off Cocks for Locomotives, of which the follow- V the invention consists ing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in blow off cooks for locomotives and more particularly to a device of this character which is provided with an improved valve seat which eliminates the necessity of packing and also provides a valve which can be used as a cab valve upon head light throttles, air pump throttles, lubricator throttles, injector throttles and the like and, in fact, this improved valve can be used for all valves of a locomotive.
The primary object of this invention is to provide means whereby to remove any sediment that collects within the interior of the valve without taking the valve apart.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken through my improved blow off cock. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the valve member.
Referring-more particularly to the draw ing, 1 indicates the body portion of my improved device. one end of which is interiorlv threaded and is adapted to receive the exterior threaded portion 2 of the barrel 3.
The barrel 3 is provided with the hexagonal portion 4 which is adapted to be engaged by a wrench or other tool in order to securely connect the stem 3 to the bodv member 1. Formed in the interior of the barrel 3 at the inner end thereof is a relatively wide recess 3'. The exterior of the barrel 3 is preferably tapered and is provided with the screw threads 5, whereby the same may be readily connected to a steam pipe or other source of supply. The body 1 is provided with a cone-shaped valve seat 6, upon which the valve 7 is mounted for rotation. Formed integral with the valve 7, is a stem 8, which projects through the extension 9 of the body 1 and mounted upon the outer end thereof, is a handle 10 which is securely held in position by means of a thumb screw 11. Mounted upon the stem 8 and disposed between the end of the extension 9 and the handle 10, is a coil spring 12, the tension of which is adapted to normally retain the valve member 7 upon the seat 6.
Formed integral with the body member 1 and projecting at right angles thereto, is a boss 13, and formed integral with the outer end 'of the boss is an angular projection 13, the outer end of which is threaded and removably engaged therewith, is a sleeve 14 which is adapted to receive the lower end of a water gage. A plug 19 is removably arranged within the opposite end of the projection 13 whereby any sediment that collects within theprojection may be removed. It will be understood that in the manufacture of my improved device, this boss and the means for supporting the water gage is to be eliminated when the device is tobe used as a blow off cock for locomotive cab valves and the like. The body 1 is providedwith a transverse opening 15 which communicates with the interior of the body and arranged therein, is a discharge spout or nozzle 16, whereby steam or water from the body 1 may be readily discharged. The valve member 7 is provided with a substantially conical-shaped face 8 which is adapted to fit tightly within the valve seat 6 and formed within the valve is a transverse port 9' and communicating therewith, is a diagonal opening 10', the opening 10 communicating with the barrel 3 and the transverse port 9 being adapted to communicate with the discharge nozzle 16. By providing the recess 3' in the barrel 3 it will be seen that the valve 7 may be reciprocated within the same.
' Formed integral with the valve member 7, at one end thereof, are the spaced ears 17 and pivotally secured between said ears, is a spiral blade 18 which is adapted to project within the barrel 3 and rotate therein upon rotary movement of the stem 8. This valve 7 will be rotated to establish com munication between the interior of the bar- .rel 3 and the discharge pipe 16. It will be seen that by the use of the coil spring 12, the valve 7 will be normal] retained in its seat 6 at all times and wil also retain the valve against accidental rotation, but should it be desired to remove the sediment from the barrel the valve 7 is reciprocated within the recess 3 and rotated at the same time thereby imparting the same movement to the blade 18 which will convey the sediment toward the valve 7. When the port 9 of the valve 7 is brought into registration with the port 15 the action of the steam or water will force the sediment through the port 10 into the port 9', and thence out through the discharge nozzle 16. My im roved device, as herein shown and describe is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.

what I claim is r A valve of the class described including a valve casing having an outlet, an inlet barrel extending from the casing, a valve arranged in the casin having a transverse port extending the entire width of the same, and further rovided with a port that communicates with the transverse port, and a Water gage supporting member carried by the caslng and having communication therewith, the valve normally occu ying a position whereby communication 1s established between the barrel and the water gage supporting member.
