. Referring to Fig. 3, inlet pipes 26 and 26' are connected with outlet pipe 27, by pipe 28 and three-way cock 29, the latterbeing controlled by handle 29', seen in Figs. 1 and 2, said cock being also connected with pipe 26a and adapted to open and close the same for controlling passage of water through said pipe, which is connected with a source of water'supply, not shown.
Inlet pipe 26 is connected with nipple 4 by pipe and connections 2G" for conducting water therefrom into Water jacket 3.
Nipple 5 is connected with pipe 27, by pipe connections 27".
Inlet chamber 17' is connected with nipple 4', by jointed pipe connections 17a "(see Pigs. 2 and 23,) while chamber 17" is similarly connected with nipple by jointed pipe connections .17. 'Said chambers are formed in the end portions of shaft 17. Inclined trough 31 has its lower end secured on tie rod 16, 4the upper endof said trough being supported by trough legs 31', the lower ends of which are securely mounted on base 11" of frame sides 11, (see Fig. 1,) said trough being adapted to support and guide castings 32, which gravitate thereon, from chills 1 and 1. Said castings gravitate along said trough, and therefromonto any suitable receptacle not shown. Before chill 1 is placed. in the position shown, heads 22 are elastically held in a position, slightly toward the right from the position seen, by .springs 21, extended to their elastic limit` `While said chill is being inserte-d and lowered to position in carrier 18, projections 8' pass in front of the lower ones of heads '22', moving said heads to the position shown,
-thereb f com )ressin their s rinffs 21.
In operation. with the parts in the position seen in Fig. 1, water under pressure in pipe 2G, (see also Fig. 3,) circulates continuonslyT through chills l and 1', while the machine is in useas hereinafter described. Said Water flows through pipe 2G, Cock 29 and pipel 26, from whence a portion of Said water tions through pipe connections 2G" and nipple l. into hvater jacket 3, upward through said jacket, and thence through nipple 5. pipe connections 27" and outlet pipe 27. into any suitable receptacle, (not showin) sach as a sewer, tank or the like. Whih` water is thus circulating through water jacket 5i, olf chill 1. the remaining porion of said water which has passed through cock 29 and pipe 26, passes through pipe 2G',
into inlet chamber 17', and thence through the jointed pipe connections 172l and nipple 4' into water jacket 3 of chill 1'. Said water passes upward through said jacket andl thence through nipple .5 and jointed pipe connections 1T", into outlet chamber 17".
Said water Hows from said chamber, thron h Y pipes 27' and 27, into the previously oescribed receptacle.
In making castings, the operator not shown, rotates lever 13 until the same is stopped on lever stop 11', which by the previously described shaft, rod and crank connections draw chill carrier 18 toward the right u'ntil chill 1', (guided by register studs 6",) is in register and in contact with chill 1. Said operator then adjusts the tension of springs 21, by screws 20 to a. sufficient pressure to overcome such static pressure as the hereinafter mentioned molten metal c-X- erts in the previously described molds, and maintain absolute contact of the face of chill 1 against the face of chill 1. The parts are detachably held in this position, by the gravity of handle 13, stopped on stop 11` and also by reason of the fact, that cranks and connecting rods 2l act as the limbs of toggles, in holding chill carrier 18. Said operator pours molten metal, not shown, into the described funnel shaped gates, thereby filling said molds and partially filling said gates, which the `previously described circu- /lation of water cools very quickly. When the thus formed castings 32, are suthciently cooled, the operator 'moves lever 13 from stop 11', back to the position shown; upon which said castings gravitate from the described molds into trough 31, from whence they gravitate onto any suitable receptacle7 not shown. Said operator repeats the previously described actions as long as desired, thereby rapidly molding a large number of clean, well formed castings, in a comparatively short space of time.
Chills 1 and 1', together with their pipe connections are drained by rotating cock handle 29', and thereby closing pipe 26?, and at the same time opening communication through said cock, between chamber 17' and pipe 28, upon which both of said chills will he drained through their previously described pipe andA chamber connections and pipe '17 into thc lcfore mentioned receptacle.
