MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM ZOPFF, a subject of Emperor William H of Germany, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a music leaf turner, and has for its primary object to provide a novel-construction wherein it will successively turn the leaves or sheets of music, and can be conveniently positioned upon a piano, organ, music stand, or the like to support music, and is automatic in its action.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a music leaf turner of this character wherein a single member is operated for the autcmatic turning of the music leaves in their order singly, thus obviating the necessity of h-..ndling the sheets for this purpose as is customary. A further object of the invention is the provision of a music leaf turner of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.

\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawings :F igure 1 is a front elevation of a music leaf turner constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation. Fig. 3 is a similar View, looking toward the opposite edge. Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line 41 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the music leaf turner comprises a main support orboard 10, preferably made from-wood,

having secured to its rear face a lower transversely arranged rail 11, and an upper resilient hook member 12, both being designed to serve in the mounting of the music leaf turner upon the instrument or stand when it is to be used for the turning of the leaves of music.

Fixed to the front face of the board 10 is a ledge 12 which serves as a rest for the music, while at an intermediate point on the front face of the said board above and below the ledge 12 are substantially U- shaped bearings 13 which are arranged in longitudinal alinement and have journaled therein stud shafts 14 to which are fixed the ends of swinging frames 15, each serving as a turning member for sheet music, and is preferably made from a single strand of stiff wire to give the requisite rigidity thereto, and these frames of the series vary in size with respect to each other.

Coiled about one of the stud shafts 14 are a series of springs 16, one end of each being fixed to one limb of each frame, while the other end is secured in the bearing 13, and these springs serve to move the arms from right to left for the automatic turning of the music leaf when the said frames are released, in a manner presently described.

Arranged centrally of the board 10 and fixed beneath the uppermost bearing 13 and the lower ledge 12 is a resilient cord or band 17 which serves to hold the music in place upon the said ledge, while connected to the frames 15 are suitable members 18 for engaging the leaves of the music so as to assure the successful turning thereof when the frames are released.

Mounted at the lower edge of the board 10 is a boxing or housing 19 in which is journaled a horizontally disposed roller 20, the shaft 21 of which is mounted in the sides of the boxing or housing 19 and has fixed thereto without the said boxing or housing ratchet wheels 22 and 28, respectively, while mounted upon the roller 20 are a series of trip projections 24, the same being arranged in staggered relation circumferentially of the said roller with respect to each other. FiXedto the-boxing. or housing 19 is a spring dog 25 which engages the teeth of the wheel 23' so as to lock the roller against rotation in one direction, yet permitting it to be moved in the reverse direction.:- l.

Loosely connected with the shaft 21next to the wheel 22 is an operating arm 26 on which is mounted a spring-held locking dog or pawl 27 which is adapted to engage the teeth of the wheel 22 for intermittently moving the roller 20 in one direction on the downward movement of the arm 26, while connected with the latter. is acoiled retractile springQS, the same being also connected to the board 10, and this spring serves to automatically lift the arm 26 after being pulled downwardly for the rotation v of the roller.

The pins 30 are formed with projections T 35 arranged in the path of movement of the trip projections 24 on the roller 20 so that when the roller is rotated the said trip projections 2.4 will engage the pro ections 35 on sistance of the springs 32 for the successive releasingof the frames 15, and thereby permit the turning of the leaves of the sheet music, which is eflected by the frames under the tension of the springs 16 connected thereto.

Connected to the arm 26 is 'a pull cable or cord 36 which'when pulled upon draws the said arm 26 downwardly, and in this movement it is locked with the ratchet wheel 26, thereby rotating the roller 20 a predetermined distance for the tripping of a single latch pin 30 to free the frame engaged thereby, and thus the latter will turn a single sheet of themusic from right to.

Mounted in the housing or boxing 19 is a guide bail 37 which serves to hold the pins 30 in close relation to the roller 20 so as to guide the said pins when being tripped by the projections 21 on the respective roller and pins for the successful operation of the music leaf turner. When it is desired to turn the sheets of music from left to rightthe pins 30 are pulled downwardly out of the path of movement thereof, and when released will lock the frames 15 at the right hand side of the board 10 so that the leaves of music will be automatically turned from right to left when the music leaf turner is operated.
