a CHIMNEY-PROTECTOR. I
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1916.
Application filed June 30, 1915. Serial No. 37,297.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stanley, in the county of Mountrail and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to chimney liners or protectors, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a liner for insertion into the section of a chimney which extends through the roof of a house, for protecting the roof against ignition by sparks flying through the chimney, in case the masonry of the chimney should become ruptured or broken in any way.
Another object of this invention is to provide a chimney liner as specified, which includes a pair of telescopically connected substantially U-shaped members, which are adjustable for increasing or decreasing the width of the liner for fitting various sized chimneys, and further to provide a plurality of transversely extending wings formed upon the ends of the section for insertion between pieces of the masonry of which the chimney is formed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view through a chimney, showing the improved liner mounted therein, Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the chimney liner.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates a chimney of ordinary construction, which is built out of brick or like material, and which extends through the roof, indicated at 2, of a house. The liner,
designated by the numeral 3 as an entirety,
is positioned interiorly of the section of the: chimney which extends through the roof 2,
and is composed of a pair of substantially U-shaped members 4 and 5. The members 4 and 5 are constructed of sheet metal, and
bent to assume substantially U-shape. The
The legs 6 and 7 of the member 5, are provided with spaced slots 14, which extend lengthwise of the legs. The legs 6 and 7 have substantially rectangularly shaped housings 15 secured to their inner surfaces, and inclosing the space immediately inward of the slots 14. The legs 8 and 9 of the member 4, have pins 16 inserted therethrough, in corresponding spaced relation with the slots 14. The pins 16 have heads 17 formed upon their ends, which heads are positioned within the interior of the substantially rectangularly shaped housings 15. The pins 16 are slidably seated in the slots 14, and form guiding means for guiding the adjustable movement of the sections 4 and 5, and also form stops for limiting the adjustment of the sections.
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alteration, to which the patentee is entitled, provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is 1. In a chimney liner, a rectangular body portion formed of a pair of adjustably connected substantially U-shaped members formed of sheet metal, transversely extending wings formed upon the ends of said members for insertion between the masonry of the chimney.
2. In a chimney liner, a substantially rectangular hollow body formed of a pair of transversely extending wings' formed zu-pon' the upper and lower ends of saidmembers for insertion in the masonry of a ehinl-ney;
and means for guiding and limiting the adjustable movement of said sections.
