r' IMPROVMENT IN HOSE-CLASPS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,563, dated August l, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. PETTIT, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Hose- Olasps, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure I represents a front view of a clasp embodying my invention. Fig. II is a side view of the same.
A A are light frames, connected together through the circular spring B, forming thus the desired clasp. The frames A are constructed of light sheet metal, with the inner sides a made slightly circular to correspond with the shape of the limb or leg. The metal is then, at one end, n, bent upward and concave to form a recess for the spring B, and is then turned backward until this part m meets the end of the inner side c, where they are fastened together by'turning the end s of said inner side a over the end of the outer side m. In the concave part u a small tongue, m, is cut out of the material, suitably shaped to receive the ends of the circular spring 1 B, which are either soldered or otherwise fastened to these tongues, and'consequently to the frames A. On the outer side m a tongue, w, is cut out of the material, suitably shaped, and bent Y upward to form a handle, by which the clasp is operated. This tongue w may be corrugated to increase thereby its stiffness. At the inner corner, between the inner side a and the concave part fn, one of the frames p A is constructed with two or more pointed tongues, fu, entering into corresponding holes made at that part in the other frame. Instead of these pointed tongues on one frame entering holes in the other frame, both frames may be made rough at those corners to take. a iirm hold of the material. The metal at the inner sides a. is left a little wider on each side than the remaining parts, which are then turned upward, forming a tlanch, i, on each side for the purpose of strengthening the frames A. These frames A may be made of very light castings, or the same may be formed of wood or any other suitable material; but the construction above described I iind the most advisable, as when made in the manner speciiied the same will be very light, and can be easily formed and shapedby suitable dies.
To operate this clasp, the frames are forced apart, against the action of the circular spring B, by pressing the projections or handles zo together, when that part of the hose which has been previously gathered together on one side of the limb or leg is placed into the central part of the circular spring B, and the frames A placed close to the limb. rllhe handles w are then let loose, when the pointedtongues c pass through the material, while the frames A close, through the action of the circular spring B, and hold thus the hose perfectly tight around the limb.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of two frames, A, and a circular spring, B, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
