IMPROVEMENT IN TOVS.

Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,559, dated August 1, 1871.

To all 'whom 'it may concer/n:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL PATTERSON, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toy 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being sists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the toy, as hereinafter more fully described.

' A and B are two uprights, connected at their lower ends by a horizontal plate or board, G. D are boards, any desired number of which may be used, and the ends of which are secured to the uprights A B. The upper faces of the boards D are grooved longitudinally with straight or zigzag grooves d, as shown in Fig. l The boards D are inclined alternatelyin opposite directions, the upper end of each lower -board being placed near the lower end of the b'oard next above it, and the grooves d' being continued through the uprights A B from the lower end of each upper board to the upper end'of the next lower board. One, two, or more sets of the grooves d may be formed, as desired, or as the size of the toy may render expedient. To the upper end of one of the uprights, as A, may be attached an ornamental cap, E; and to the top of the other upright, as B, is attached a flat cap, F, having curved grooves f formed upon its upper surface, as many grooves j" being formed as there are sets of grooves d in the inclined boards D. The grooves f are continued through the upper part of the upright B to connect with the grooves d', as shown in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. l. The ends of the grooves j" may be enlarged, as

shown in Fig. 2, for convenience in placing the balls or marbles in them. The grooves d of the lower board D are continued through the upright B, and to the outer side of said upright, just beneath the orilices or terminations of the grooves cl', is hinged a block, G, which has curved grooves g formed in it, the end parts of which are enlarged and deepened to serve as receptacles for the balls. Vhen the toy is not in use the block G may be turned up againstthe outer side of the upright B and secured by a button, H, thus keeping the balls securely.

Ii desired, one, two, three, four, or more conical pieces, I, having spiral grooves i formed in their outer surfaces, may be placed upon the cap F, one above the other, the upper end of the groove in each lower piece l communicating with the lower end ofthe groove in the next upper piece through a hole in the bottom of said upper piece, and the lower end of the groove of the lower piece I communicating with one of the grooves in the cap F. The pieces I are connected with each other and with the cap F byV dowel-pins or other convenient fastenin gs.

In using the toy the object aimed at is to see how many balls can be kept passing down through the toy at the same time, by taking the balls, one at a time, from the receiving-block Gr and placing them in the end ofthe groove in the cap F or in the upper', piece I.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-l 1. An improved toy, consisting ofthe uprights A B, inclined grooved boards D d', grooved cap F j", and grooved and hinged receiving-block G g', said parts being constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
