Description

UNITED STATES .FICE
IMPROVEMENT IN POWDER-BOXES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,510, dated August l, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, BENJAMIN F. BROWN, of Boston, in the county of Su'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gases for Powdered Materials, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a box to contain a powdered article, provided at one end with a perforated cover, the p erforations of which are closed by attaching to the inner face of the cover-head a sheet of paper or other similar material of suitable size, which paper is applied previous to placing the cover on the boX, when it is sealed at its joint or seam therewith in any suitable manner.
A box constructed as above described is more especially intended for the putting up of bluingpowder for household uses; and the object of the invention is to close the perforations to the escape of the powder in transportation, and yet, at the same time, allow them to be readily opened to discharge the powder as. desired by simply puncturing the paper seal at the perfor-ations with an ordinary pin or sewing-needle, which with all housekeepers, is always at hand.
In the accompanying drawing my improvement in cases for powdered material is illustrated, Figure l being a central vertical section of a case constructed according thereto, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the outside of case-cover.
A in the drawing represents a case or can, which may be made of sheet metal, Wood, or other suitable material, to which B is the cover, adapted to set over the open end of the can and thus close it. The head-plate C of this cover B is provided with perforations a of any suitable number and distances apart, which perforations, by a sheet or disk of paper, b, of suitable size, are closed, the said paper sheet being applied to the inside face Vof the cover-head c, and there secured by glue, paste, or other suitable adhesive material. With the perforated cover-head c prepared with paper sheet b as described, and the case A iilled with the powdered article desired, the cover B is then placed on the case and its joint or seam (Z therewith sealed by a strip of paper, as shown. It is plain that the contents of the case are sealed from escape in transportation, but that, by puncturing the paper sheet b with a common pin or needle, the powder can be discharged through the perforations, as desired.
I am aware that powdered substances have been before put up in perforated cases the perforations of which were sealed, but my improvement possesses many important advantages, among them the following: That -the sealing medium is within the case, and, therefore, not liable to be detached in transportation, and that the sealing mediiun is such as in puncturing it to open the perforation no particles are detached.
Having thus described my invention., I shall state my claim as follows:
As a new article of manufacture, a package or case for bluing-powder, &c., constructed of a can or box, A, and head-plate O, adapted to lit over box A, when said head-plate C is made of rigid material and has perforations a closed by paper sheet b, all as herein described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 7th day of December, A. D. 1870.
Witnesses: B. F. BROWN.
