Beit known that HENRY J. MURRAY, a
Richmond, county of Richmond, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Presses, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention. relates to hydraulic or other fluid pressure hat presses of that class in which the hat is pressed against a die, usually heated, by means of a flexible and elastic pressing bag which is forced against the hat by the pressure of the water or other fluid admitted to a pressure chamber of .which the pressing bag forms one side,la,nd' the invention relates more particularly to. improvements in the pressing bag and the 4 gasket which is usually employed for protecting the edge of the bag when it is.

Pressing bags for use in these-machines are commonly made of india rubber and the life of a bag is comparatively short to which it is subjected in use, the wear and tear incident to the grip of the clamping devices and the presthe die and die support, and the high tempera- -ture of parts .of the machine with which it comes in contact. The cost of providing new pressing bags forms a very considerable expense in the operation of these machines. The gaskets used for protecting the edge the bags are also usually made of of comparatively short life, and form another very considerable item of expense.
The object of the present invention is to provide machines of this class with rubber pressing bags and gaskets which shall be so formed as to havegreater power of resistance to the wear and tear of use chine and -to the deteriorating action of heat than the bags and gaskets heretofore in use; and to this end the invention consistsin providing in or for use in a machine ofl this class a pressing bag, and preferably also a gasket, strengthened Aand protected as hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows the pressure dome 10, die seat 11, and die 12, of a well-known form of hydraulic hat press. The pressure dome 10 has a clamping plate or flange 13 formed around its edge and a movable clamping plate or flange v 4lx1 adapted tobe drawn toward the flange 13 'l-bTylfmeans of tightening bolts and nuts 15.

The pressure dome is" provided with a water inlet 21 to which water `isfsupplied in the usual manner, and is .also;zprovided with an air cock 22. These parts as shownarejof well known construction and maybe of any suitable or desirable construction: The edge portion of the pressing 25 is clamped between the clamping l bag plates or flanges 13 and 14 in the usual manner, a gasket 26 being preferably placed between the bag and the lower clamping plate.
A protecting sheet 27 of leather or other suitable material is usually placed between the bag and the hat to protect the surface of the bag during the operation of pressing.
The pressing bag 25 is formed of india rubber or other suitable material having the characteristics of flexibility, extensibility and elasticity of rubber, and the term rubber as .usedin the claims, as applied to the pressing bag, is to be understood as including any such other material. To protect and strengthen the portion of the bag which is most subjected to wear and strain in the machine and to the deteriorating action of heat, the bag is provided with a covering 28 of flexible fabric on one or both, preferably both, surfaces of that part of its brim portion which includes a part which is clamped between the clamping flanges and a part inside of and immediately adjacent thereto. The flexible fabric preferably extends from the edge of the bag inward for a distance substantially greater than the width of the clamping flanges, and is preferably secured to the surface of the bag by being vulcanized thereto, and is preferably a woven fabric `which may be of cotton or other suitable material. A circular strip of one or more pieces cut from fabric woven with an ordinary cross weave, such as canvass or duck, answers the purpose well. For use where the bag` is to be subjected to extremely high temperatures, the cpvering fabric may be formed of asbestos. Such a covering of flexible fabric on one or both surfaces of the outer part of the brim portionof the bag, while not interfering with the action of the bag in the machine, will strengthen the bag where the greatest strength" is needed, that is; Ligand adjacent to the illner edges of the clamping fianges,and will protect the bag from being cut by the edges of the clamping anges and of the die seat and by the edges of the die when'the die is of a form having its upper outer edge near the clamping flanges, and will also to a large extent protect the rubber from being burned or deteriorated'by contact with the heated parts of the press. j
It will be understood that a pressing bag is frequently used in a hat press without having the gasket interposed between the bag and the lower clamping flange as shown in the drawings, and that whenso used the lower surface of the outer brim portion of the bag in the position shown in Fig. l will come directly in contact with the lower clamping ange and with the die when the latter is of the form shown or of any form which brings its outer upper edge in position to be engaged by the bag or gasket. The gasket 26, which is .also made of rubber or other suitable flexible and elastic material, is made of such size or diameter as to lie between the bag and the lower clamping flange, and of such width as to extend inward sufliciently beyond the inner edge of the lower clamping flange to provide a yielding support for the bag and to protect the bag from the edge of the die seat and the outer upper edge of the die or of any saddle or material which may be used as a filling when dies of other forms than that shown and which reuire such lilling are used. The lower sur- .ace, and preferably also the upper surface, of the gasket is provided with a protecting and strengthening covering 29 of flexible material which extends from the outer edge of the gasket to within a short distance of the inner edge thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, leaving an uncovered portion of the rubber projecting beyond the covering fabric at the inner edge of the gasket. The covering fabric is preferably vulcanized to the rubber and is preferably a woven fabric of cotton, asbestos or other suitable material. The use of asbestos fabric is desirable when the gasket is to be subjected to extremely high temperatures; and the strengthening and protecting of the bag and gasket with a flexible fabric of asbestos or other material having high power of resistance to heat forms a featureof the invention. Furthermore the inner edge of the gasket is preferably made of tapered or beveled form so as to give with the bag under pressure and lessen the chafing of the bag by the edge of the gasket.
To get the best results, the lower protecting strip of fabric on the bag and the gasket should be of such relative widths that the protecting strip of the bag will extend inside of the inner edge of the gasket, as shown clearly in Fig. 3, so that if the bag is bent downward the portion of the bag which engages the inner edge of the gasket will be protected by the fabric, and it should be noted also that because of the inner edge of the gasket being free of any fabric covering, the chaling and wear on the fabric covering of the bag at this point will be less than if the fabric on the gasket extended clear to its inner edge. It will be understood that dies of various forms and sizes may be used in hat presses of the class to which the invention relates and with which my improved pressing bag and gasket may be employed, and that the shape which the pressing bag will assume in the operation of the machine and the strains to which it will be subjected will vary greatly according to the shape and size .of the die. A simple and symmetrical form of die is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, with which the pressing bag takes a position in which its brim portion extends directly inward from the clamping flanges. With dies of other shapes and sizes, the brim portion of the bag, especially near the clamping flanges, would ytake other positions and be subjected to different possibilities of wear and strain.
What is claimed is:
l. In a fluid pressure hat press, the combination with the pressure dome, the die, the die seat, and the clamping faces for securing the pressing bag to the dome, of a flexible rubber pressing bag having a protecting and strengthening covering of flexible fabric secured to one surface of that part of its brim portion which includes a part which is clamped between the clamping faces and a part inside of and adjacent thereto, the main central portion of the bag being without such covering.
2. In a fluid pressure hat press, the combination with the pressure dome, the die, the die seat, and the clamping faces for securing the pressing bag to the. dome, of a liexible rubber pressing bag having a rotecting and strengthening covering of, secured to each surface of that part of its brim portion which includes a pa'rt which 1s clamped between the clamping faces and a partinside of and adjacent thereto, the main central portion of the bag being without such covering.
3. In a :fluid pressure hat press, the combination with the pressure dome, the die, die supporting and heating means, and the clamping faces for securing the pressing bag to the dome, of a flexible rubber pressing bag having a protecting and strengthening covering of flexible woven fabric secured to one surface of that part of its brim portion which includes a part which is clamped between the clamping faces and a part inside of and adjacent thereto, the main central portion of the bag being without'such covering. 1
4:. In a fluid pressure hat press, the combination with the pressure dome, the die, die supporting and heating means, and the clamping faces for securing the pressing bag to the dome, of a flexible rubber pressing bag having a protecting and strengthening covering of flexible asbestos fabric secured to one surface of that part of its brim portion which includes a part which is clamped between the clamping faces and a part inside of and adjacent thereto, the main centrai portion of the bag being without such covering.
5. In a fluid pressure hat press, the conif bination with the pressure dome, the die, die
supporting and heating means, clamping faces for securing the pressing bag to the dome, -of aiiexible rubber pressing bag having secured to one surface of its brim portion a protecting and strengthening covering of flexible fabric extending from the edge of the bag inward for a distance greater than the width of the clamping faces, the main central portion of the bag being without such covering.
6. In a fluid pressure hat press, the combination with the pressure dome, the die, die supporting and heating means, and the clamping faces for securing the pressing bag to the dome, ing bag having a protecting and strengthening covering of flexible fabric vulcanized on one surface of that part of its brim portion which includes a part which is clamped between the clamping faces and a part inside of and adjacent thereto, the main central portion of the bag being without such covering.

8. In a fluid pressure hat press, the combination with the pressure dome, the die, the die supporting and heating means, and the clamping faces for securing the pressing bag to the dome, of a flexible rubber pressing bag having a protecting and strengthening covering of flexible fabric on the surface toward the die of that part of its brim portion which includes a part which is clamped between the clamping faces and a part inside of and adjacent thereto, and a rubber gasket between the bag and the clamping face on the die side of the bag which extends inward beyond the clamping face and which is provided on its surface toward the die with a strengthening and protecting covering of flexible fabric which ends short of the inner edge of the gasket.
