CHARLES O. JOHNSON AND ALBERT J. JAHRAUS, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
CLOSET-SEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. '7, 1916.
Application filed July 8, 1914. Serial No. 849,800.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES 0. JOHN- SON and ALBERT J. JAHRAUs, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closet-Seats; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to closet seats for small children, and has for an object to provide an improved folding seat adapted to be temporarily attached to or placed over an ordinary closet seat.
A further object of the invention is to provide a seat of the class described which shall have improved means for holding the child in desired position while using the seat.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- Figure I is a top plan view'of the seat with the holding means in position for use and indicating in dotted lines the position of the holding means when folded. Fig. II is a view of the seat in rear elevation. Fig. III is a vertical cross section on line AA in Fig. I.
A side frame 5 is hinged as at 6 and 7 upon the seat 1 and provided with lugs 8 and 9 projecting therefrom for engaging said seat member 1 to prevent said frame 5 from being unfolded beyond a position perpendicular to said seat member 1. Likewise upon the seat member 1 we provide a side frame 10 hingedly mounted as at 11 and 12 and having lugs 13 and 14, in construction and purpose similar to the frame 5 and lugs 8 and 9. A band 15 secures one end of back 16 to frame 5 and permits it to be folded thereon. At its other end back member 16 is provided with a vertically arranged tubular clasp 17 having a longitudinal slot in one side and a hook 18 extending laterally from one end of the clasp. The tubular portion engages the upright of the adjacent side member and the hook engages the horizontal portion thereof.
Near the front of the side frame 5 We mount a strap 19 with a snap hook 20 at its other end, engaging when in operative posi tion the ring 21 mounted at the front of the side frame 10 all as clearly shown at Fig. I.
It will be apparent that when the side frames 5 and 10 are raised to vertical position and the back member 16 swung to operative position and engaged by its hooks 17 and 18 with the side frame 10, a child sitting upon the seat member 1 will be inclosed by the back and sides forming a fence upon the three sides and when the hook 20 is engaged with the ring 21 the child will be entirely inclosed and held in desired position.
It will also be apparent that when not in use, the whole device may be readily removed from the closet seat, the hooks 17, 18 and 20 unhooked, the back member 16 folded upon the side frame 5 and then both the side frames 5 and 10 folded into dotted line positions shown in Figs. I and II so that the whole will be in compact form for storage, transportation or traveling.
We claim:
In a device of the class described, a seat, side members comprising uprights and horizontal portions, a back member, means for permanently and hingedly connecting said back member to the upright of one of the 'side members, and foldable thereon, fastening means engaging respectively the upright and the horizontal portion of the opposite side member when in operative position, and means hingedly connect- In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures each in presence of two witnesses.
