. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. '7, 191?.
Application filed October 28, 1914. Serial No. 869,077.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. GARLAND, a. citizen of the United States, residing at High Point. in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Kitchen Safes or Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to kitchen safes or cabinets for various purposes, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide reliable and efficient means of simple construction for connecting the parts of the safe or cabinet together and for permitting them to be removed for folding the cabinet into a small space for storage and shipping.
Another object of the invention is to provide a foldable or knock-down safe or cabinet, which can be quickly assembled and held in operative position, and which can be readily taken apart and folded for shipment.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a rear elevation with the back removed of a kitchen safe made in accordance with this invention, the lower portion of the safe or cabinet being broken away, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 5 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow, Fig. 3 is an end view of the back and two sides of the safe when in folded position, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the cam fasteners, Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the front side of the safe, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the rear side of the safe.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the front upright of the safe or cabinet and 2 is the upper cross piece and 3 is the lower cross piece. Suitable gauze doors 4 may be hinged at 5 to the inner sides of the members 1. The members 1 of the safe or cabinet are each provided with a mortise 6 on the rear side thereof, and the side members 7 are each provided with a tenon S which fits in the mortise (3 when in set-up position. The members 1 and the sides 7 are hinged together at 9, so they can be folded in the condition shown in Fig. 3. The side members 7 are also provided with tenons 9 and connected to the side members 7 are rods or bolts 10, which extend through the back member 11 of the cabinet, said rods terminating in angular projections 12. The back member 11 is provided with a mortise 13 to receive the tenons 14 of the sides 7. Cam levers 15 provided with suitable handles 16 are pivoted at 17 to the back adjacent to the angular ends 12 of the bolts 10, and when said bolts are passed through apertures in the back 11, the cam levers 15 are turned underneath the angular portions 12 to firmly hold the four parts of the safe or cabinet in position. By merely turning the cam levers 15, the bolts 10 may be withdrawn and the two side members 17 may be folded in position as shown in Fig. 3.
The top 21.0f the safe or cabinet on its underside is provided with two smooth spring latches, said latches each comprising a casing 22, in which is pivoted at 23 a latch member 24 having a finger hold 25 and a spring 26 which bears upon said lever and holds the projecting end 27 in connection with a notch or stop 28 formed in the side members 7 of the safe.
In order to fold the safe into small space for storage or shipping, the latches 241 are operated against the tension of the springs 26 and the top 21 is removed. Then the cam levers 15 are operated and the back 11 is removed from the sides 7. The sides are then folded down as shown in Fig. 8 and the back is laid on top.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
What is claimed is A folding cabinet comprising a front wall having a longitudinal extending groove adjacent each end on its inner face, side walls being hingedly connected to said front wall and adapted to fold on said front wall, a tongue arranged on each longitudinal edge of each of said side walls, said tongue being flush with the outer face of said side walls, one of said tongues of each side wall being adapted to engage in the grooves of said front wall whereby a tight joint is formed when said side walls are in extended position, rearwardly extending bolts secured to the rear edge and adjacent said tongue of each side wall, angular projections on said bolts, a rear wall having a plurality of slots formed flierein cams pivoted to said rear wall and adjacent each of said slotsya' tongue formed on each longitudinal edge of said rear Wall, said tongue being 'flush'with the outer surface of said rear wallwhereby said rear Wall is adapted to be fitted to said side Walls, said bolts being adaptedto extend through said'slots, and said cams being adapted to engage in said angular projections whereby said rear Wall is secured to Wherebysaidtbp Wallis held lII-pOSltlOII.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature 15 7 V in presence "of 'two Witnesses.
