BRUSH ATTACHMENT FOR DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1916.
Application filed April 21, 1915. Serial No. 22,879.
To @ZZ @nimm t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT M. CRAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fontana, in the county of Miami and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush Attachments for Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to ,new and useful improvements in brush attachments for -doors and my object is to provide means for agitating the brush when the door is opened to cause flies or other insects adjacent the door to be driven away.
A further object is to so mount the brush that it will be agitated every time the door is opened. And a further object is to provide means for returning the brush to a p0- sition adjacent the face of the door and' parts to which .it is connected when the'door is closed.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed ont in the accompanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure l' is a front elevation of a door and casing showing my improved device attached thereto and in closed position. VFig. 2 is a similar view showing the brush in elevated position and the door partly open. Fig. 3isaperspec tive view of the door and frame showing a portion of the brush broken away, and Fig. l is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of operating lever.
Referring to the drawings in which simi-V lar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the door frame and 2 the door casing to which the frame is hingedly secured in the usual or any preferred manner, the frame 1 having screen wire 3 attached thereto. Hingedly secured to the horizonvtal portion 4 of the casing 2 is a wire frame 5 which is preferably rectangular in general outline, the upper bar thereof being pivotally secured to the horizontal portion l in any suitable manner as by means of staples 6, or the like, said wire frame being preferably covered with fabric or other material 7, to the lower edge of which is sei cured the brush proper 8, which brush is vpreferably formed of strips of paper or similar material that will cause a rustling sound when the frame 5 is agitated. rlhe upper bar of frame 5 is provided with angular extensions 9 which are so bent as to form a loop v10 at their point of juncture, said loop being designed to receive the stem 11 of an operating lever l2 and by means of which the movement of the frame 5 in one direction is controlled.
In,I order to cause the frame 5 and parts carried thereby to be violently agitated and swung upwardly to a horizontal position when the door 1 is being opened, the lever 12 is provided with a crank portion 13, the connecting arms 14; and 15 thereof normally resting. in a vertical position and adjacentl thev outer face of the upper end of the door l when the door is in a closed position, the main body of the lever 12 being in a plane immediately above the upper edge of the door 1 and pivoted to the casing 2 by means of clips 16 or otherwise.
By directing the arm 14 downwardly and into the path of the upper end of the door l, it will be readily seen that when the door is moved to an open position, said arm 14 will be contactedand the frame 5 and brush attached thereto violently swung upwardly, thus agitating the brush and scaring the liies and other insects to such an extent as to cause them to leave the vicinity of the door and by providing the 'crank portion 13, which' will rest upon the upper edge of the door at such time as the door is in an open or partially open posit-ion, the frame 5 and parts carried thereby will be held in a horizontal position until the door is entirely closed. As soony as the door reaches its closedposition a tension spring 17, one end of which is attached to the lo-op 10 and the opposite end to the horizontal portion 4L, will immediately lower the frame 5 and parts carried thereby to their normal position over the face of the door and casing and will hold the same in that position until the door is again opened.
The tension of the spring 17, in view of the position of the arm la, will also assist in holding the door l in closed position and will prevent the same from swinging open when a strong blast of air is directed thereagainst.
1n view of the simplicity. of this device, it I can be very cheaply manufactured and readily applied 'to use" and can be used with any preferred make of door and casing'.
It will further be seen that in view of the rapid pivotal movement of the frame when the door is opened, the brush portionthereof will be violently agitated and swung in the arc of a circle in such manner as kto frighten the ilies or other insects adjacent the door, thus keeping them at a distance while the door is being opened and closed. Y
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, the operating lever l2 is provided with a stem 11 'at each end so that by shifting said lever 12 from edge to edge of the door frame, the brush may be operated by doors opening in either direction withontrequiring the employment of a separate lever.
Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by LetterslPatent is 1. The combination with a swinging door and a casing therefor, of a frame, a brush carried bythe frame, a lever pivoted to the casing having a crank portion and a stem, said stem coacting with theframe to raise Vand .lower thersame and the vcrank section the casing, a brush attached rto the frame, a
loop formed on the frame, an operating lever pivoted to thecasing and having parts thereof extended in the path of the door,
and a stem on thelever engaging said loop to operate the frame vwhen the door is opened, and means to lower the frame when the door is in closed position. Y
In testimony whereof I have signed my .name to thisspeciication inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERBERT M. CRAMER.
