To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Groen F. RUss, a citizen of the United States, residing 1n leehawken, in the county of Hudson andl State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line-Taping Devices, of which the 'following' is a specification.
This invention relates to, and has for a main object to provide, means for taping lines such as wash lines whereby to protect the goods to be secured on the line from being soiled by any foreign material that may have collected on such line.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a taping means for wash lines which will feed out the tape simultaneously with the movement of the wash line.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a feeding arrangement which can be readily disconnected from coperl ation with the wash line.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a suitable exit guide from the tape housing which exit guide can with facility be displaced so as to prevent the tape from feeding Jfrom said housing.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings ink which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the tape housing attached to a wash line pulley. Fig. 2 is a view showing the tape housing and pulley partly in cross section. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevational view, parts being broken away to show the closing means for 'the tape housing. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevational view showing the taping arrangement in functional position in connection with a wash line. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary end view of the tape housing showing the closing means for such housing.
In the embodiment shown, there is pro vided a pulley bracket 1 having a securing eyelet 2 in which bracket is formed an opening 3 concentric with but of greater diameter than the opening il formed in the wall 5 of the tape housing 6 vwhich wall 5 is integral with the bracket 1, is circular and has an annular' rabbet 7 around its outer edge to accommodate the annular edge'of the cylindrical wall 8 of the housing 6 which wall 8 is integral with the disk shaped outer wall 9 of such housing, the cylindrical wall 8 being secured to such wall 5 by any suitable means, 1n the present instance, the cylindrical wall 8 having lugs 29, provided with openings registering with the openings formed in theY ears 30 of the wall member 5 to receive the thumb screws 10.
The tape 11 is wound on a spool 12 having a. cylindrical tube member 13 to which are secured two disk shaped guiding members 14 spaced apart from one another and between which the tape is wound on such tube member 13A being guided by the disk members 14.
The pulley 15 and spool 12 are both mounted on a common shaft 16, the shaft 16 having an enlarged portion 17 which has a longitudinally disposed slot 18 to form a resilient seat for the spool 12 which is mounted on such enlarged portion 1.7 vand frictionally maintained thereon. On the smaller portion 19 of the shaft 16 is mounted the pulley 15 which hasan annular recess around one side of its centrall bore to accommodate a washer 20, which is located against the shoulder formed between the enlarged portion 17 and the smaller portion 19, and the outer free end of such smaller portion 19 is screw-threaded to receive the screwethreaded nutY 21l disposed in the enlarged opening 3 in the bracket 1, by means of which the pulley 15 is securely clamped between the washer 2O and the nutV 21 and the washer 20 securely held against the shoulder formed between the enlarged portion 17 and the smaller portion 19 and the pulley thereby frictionally fixed to such shaft 16 so that with the rotation of the pulley 15 the spool 12 frictionally fixed to the shaft 16, will be also rotated. From the foregoing it will be seen that when it is desired to disconnect the spool 12 from the pulley 15 it is only necessary to loosen the nut 21.
In one side of the cylindrical wall 8 of the housing 6 is formed an opening 22 through whichV the tape 11 is fed out of such housing 6. To form a guide for the tape out of such opening 22, there is provided a shield 23 fixed to a rod 24 pivotally secured in bearings 25 formed in said cylindrical wall 8 adjacent to said opening 22, the shield 23 having a finger piece 26 by means -of which the shield can be manipulated.` By tilting the shield 23 into the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 3 in which it projects inward into the housing llO 6 it will serve as an exit guide for the tape from such housing 6. On the other hand, by tilting it into the dotted line position illustrated in such Fig. 3, where it is in alinement with the cylindrical wall 8, it will serve as a deiector to prevent exit of such tape from such housing 6.
The operation of the device is as follows: lNhen it is desired to have the spool 12 rotated with the pulley 15 and to permit the tape 11 to feed from said housing 6 simultaneously with the movement of the wash line 27 illustrated in Fig. l, it is only necessary to turn the nut 21 to clamp the shaft 16 on said pulley 15, and to tilt the shield 23 into the full line position illustrated in Fig. 3. Thereupon the tape 11 will feed out of the housing 6 with the movement of the wash line 27 as illustrated, be secured to said wash line, the garment to be supported on said wash line secured over said tape 11, and the clothes pin 28 clamped thereover.
When it is desired to use the wash line 27 without the tape 11, and to prevent the tape 11 from being fed out of such housing 6, it will be necessary, either to tilt the shield 23 into the dotted line position shown in F ig. 3, or else to loosen the nut 21 and permit the pulley 15 to rotate on said shaft 16 without also rotating the shaft 16 in which case, the spool l2 will remain stationary.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the genera-l spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A device of the character describedl having a pulley bracket, a tape housing, a common shaft passing through both the housing and the bracket, a pulley in said pulley bracket mounted on said shaft, a tape spool in said housing, a shoulder yon said shaft, and securing means on the end of said shaft between which shoulder and securing means said pulley is located, said pulley being frictionally clamped to said shaft when said securing means are tightened.
2. A device of the character described having a pulley bracket, a tape housing attached thereto, a common shaft passing through both the housing and bracket, a pulley in said pulley bracket mounted on said shaft, a tape spool in said housing also mounted on said shaft, there being an outlet in such housing through which said tape may be fed, and an exit guide disposed in said outlet to guide the tape out of said housing.
3. ln a device of the character described having a tape housing, a tape spool in said housing having tape thereon, there being an outlet in such housing through which said tape may be fed, a guide disposed in said outlet tiltably mounted, and adapted when inclining inwardly to guide the tape out of saidy housing and when in alinement with the wall of said housing to prevent the feeding out of such tape, said guide being frictionally mounted so that it will remain set when disposed in its inwardly inclining position or lwhen disposed in alinement with the wall of said housing.

A device of the character described having a pulley bracket, a tape housing attached thereto, a common shaft passing through both the housing and bracket, a pulley in said pulley bracket mounted on said shaft, a tape spool in said housing also mounted on said shaft, there being an outlet in such housing through which said tape may be fed, a guide disposed in said outlet tiltably mounted, and adapted when inclining inward to guide the tape out of said housing and when in alinement with the wall of ysaid housing to prevent the feeding out of said tape, said guide being frictionally mounted so that it will remain set when disposed in its inwardly inclining position or when disposed in alinement with the wall of said housing.
5. A device of the character described having a pulley bracket, a tape for protecting goods to be secured on a wash line, and means attached to said pulley bracket for feeding out said tape.
6. A device of the character described having a pulley bracket, a pulley mounted thereon, a tape for protecting goods to be secured on a wash line, and means attached to said pulley bracket for feeding out said tape simultaneously with the movement of said pulley.
7. A device of the character described having a pulley bracket, a tape housing attached thereto, a common shaft passing through both the housing and the pulley bracket, the common shaft comprising an enlarged portion provided with a longitudinal. slot to form a resilient seat, and a smaller portion, the outer end of which smaller portion is screw-threaded, the tape spool in said housing frictionally mounted on said enlarged portion by means of its resilient seat, a washer in said pulley bracket mounted on said smaller portion and disposed adjacent to the shoulder formed between the enlarged portion and smaller portion of said common shaft, a pulley mounted on said smaller portion, and a nut internally screw-threaded and secured on the screw-threaded end of said smaller portion and adapted to clamp said pulley between said washer and said nut and against the shoulder formed between said enlarged portion and smaller portion, whereby the rotation of said pulley will rotate said shaft and with it said tape spool.
8. In a device of the character described,
a tape housing comprising a cylindricaly wall, a tape spool in said housing having tape thereon, there being an outlet formed in said cylindrical wall to permit the feeding out of said tape from said housing, a rod pivotally connected to said cylindrical wall and disposed in said outlet, and a shield frictionally fixed to said rod and adapted to be tilted inwardly to forni a guide for the feeding out of the tape and to be disposed in alineinent with the cylindrical wall t0 prevent the feeding out of the tape, the frictional engagement between said shield and said rod operating so that said shield will remain set when disposed in its inwardly inclining position or when disposed in alinement with the wall of said housing.
9. In a device of the character described, a tape housing comprising a cylindrical wall, a tape spool in said housing having tape thereon, there being an outlet formed in said cylindrical wall to permit the feeding out of said tape from said housing, a rod pivotally connected to said cylindrical wall and disposed in said outlet, and a shield frictionally fixed to said rod and adapted to be tilted inwardly to form a guide for the feeding out of the tape and to be disposed in alinement with the cylindrical wall to prevent the feeding out of the tape, the frictional engagement between said shield and said rod operating so that said shield will remain set when disposed in its inwardly inclining position or when disposed in alineinent with the wall of said housing, said shield having a nger-piece projecting outward therefrom by means of which the shield may be manipulated.

A device of the character described having a pulley bracket, a tape housing, a common shaft passing through both the bracket and the housing, a pulley in said pulley bracket mounted on said shaft, a tape spool in said housing mounted and frictionally held on said shaft, a tape for protecting goods to be secured on a wash line wound on said spool, and means for frictionally securing said tape pulley to said shaft so that the rotation of said pulley will actuate said tape spool to feed out said tape simultaneously with the movement of said pulley.
