mentioned, first that of providing a novel' gasburner unit wherein a screen 15 disposed to prevent back fire without retarding the flow of gas; second, burner units that can be easily and compactly assembled to form a multiple burner having a large flame area, and third, a multiple burner which affords a central opening for a controlling valve.

Figure 1 is a plan of burner units grouped or assembled to heat the coil of an instantaneous water heater; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a burner unit partly broken away and partly in section; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on the line III- III of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 1.
Burner units in accordance with my invent-ion each comprises a mixing tube or pipe 1 having the lower end thereof provided with a conventional mixing device 2 by which air and gas commingle to insure proper combustion when ignited. The upper end of the pipe '1 has an expansionchamber 3 slightly flaring in shape with the bottom thereof provided with, an annular interior seat 4 at the juncture of said expansion chamber and the pipe 1. The top of the expansion chamber 3 is rounded off or convex to that extent as to shed water and is closed with the except'on of a concentric opening 5 having the walls thereof screwthreaded to receive a threaded plug 6. This plug has the outer end thereof provided with a nut 7 adapted to accommodate a wrench, and the inner end of said plug has a sleeve or positioning member 8 adapted to cooperate with the seat 4 in properly positioning a vertically disposed tubular screen or foraminous body 9. ameter than the bore of the pipe 1, with said'screen of suflicient length to allow gas to pass through the same into the chamber 3 without retarding the flow of gas or reducing the pressure of the same. The tubular screen also serves as a filter and it is through the medium of the plug 6 that the screen can be properly installed and cleaned should occasion require.
The large or upper end-of the expansion chamber 3 has a burner head 10 radially disposed relative to the longltudinal axis of the chamber 3 and said burner head has side walls 11 tapering away from the expansion chamber 3, to the end of the burner head, which is closed and has thereof provided with positioning lugs 12 and lug receiving sockets 13. The burner head 10 is in communication with the chamber 3 and the sidewalls 11 of saidburner head have jets or orts 14. The jets 14 on one side of the burner head are staggered or alternately arranged relative to the jets 14 on the opposite side of the burner head, this being best shown in Fig. 1, where it will be also observed that the jets of adjoining burner heads are staggered or alternately arranged. With the burner units positioned as shown in Fig. 1,- the disposition of the jets insures a large grouped or jets'14 are-disposed at an acute angle relative to the vertical plane passing through the axis of the burner Fig. 4, whereby gas will be directed upwardly and outwardly toward the spaces between the jets of an adjoining burner unit.
One of the reasons the jets are not vertical the bottom side head, as best shown" the lug receiving socket 13 said lugs and is, because all automatic water heaters colthe coils which drops and would be deposited intheopenings and interfere with the combustion, therefore the top of burner units is madelike a roof and the jets of flame are protected from drip pings, but the flame is directed to the horizontal plane to impinge against at an angle the coils. By tapering the expansion chamflames as provided by my improved multiple burner, which is essential in connection with an instantaneous water heater.
I attach considerable importance to the grouping or assembling of the burner units as I am enabled to place twelve burner units in a space of fifteen inches in diameter, and as each burner unit has nine jets, there are one hundred and eight jets all told providing a flame of such intensity that Water can be heated when flowing through the coil of an instantaneous water heater.
The manner of connecting the inner ends of the burner heads insures a central opening of suflicient size to accommodate an automatic gas and water valve such as shown in and forming the subject matter of a companion application filed Sept. 30, 1915, Serial No. 53382, consequently the burner units are compactly assembled relative to the valve and the entire structure can be readily embodied in an instantaneous water heater having a conventional coil subjected to the action of a burnerflame. While the burner units have been found very economical in the consumption of fuel gas, where an intense heat is desired, it is to be understood that the burner units may be used under boilers, in stoves either for heating or cooking purposes, and in many other places.
What I- claim is 1. A gas burner unit comprising a pipe,
able means in the top of said chamber 7 adapted to hold and osition the upper end of said screen.
2. A burner unit comprising an expansion chamber, a jetted burner head disposed at right angles to the axis of said chamber, a tubular screen having the lower end thereof seated in the bottom of said chamber, and a detachable plug in the top of said chamber adapted to hold and position the upper end of said screen.
3. In a multiple burner for water heaters, converging burner heads adapted to receive fuel gas at the outer ends thereof and having tapering side walls provided with jets and the jets of one wall staggered relative to the jets of the other wall whereby the assembled burner heads have staggered jets at the confronting walls thereof affording a large flame area. 4. A multiple burner for water heaters, comprising pipes, converging burner heads in communication with said pipes and disposed at right angles thereto, said burner heads having tapering side walls provided with jets and the jets of one wall staggered relative to the jets of the other wall whereby the assembled burner heads have staggered jets at the confronting walls thereof afiording a large flame area, and means carried by the inner end of each burner head adapted to maintain the inner ends of said burner heads in spaced relation.
