Be it known that. we, VALENTINE voN DER LIN and SIMON J. voN DER LIN, citizens of the United States, and residents of the borough'of Manhattan, city, county, and

Stateof New" York, have inventedv certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture- Treads, of which the following is a specification.

The main object of our present invention is to afford a very simple, cheap, yet eiec tive adjustable tread for application to theA 1,123,959, and No. 1,123,960, issued to us l sa VJanuary 5th, 1915, and in our lconcurrent application Serial No. 876,772, filed Dec. 12,

1914, we have shown and described threepart devices of this character which have l'jipven practical and effective in use, alt ough somewhat expensivelto manufacture. By our present two-part structure lwe are enabled to attain like results much more economically as related to cost of production without detracting from the utility or convenience of the device.

Hence our Invention consists in the specitic construction and arrangement of parts herein described and claimed,-di stinctive vfeatures being an internally threaded mem# ber U-shaped in vertical section and hence closed at bottom to form a central tread or contact surface, said tread member screwing directly upon a screw post attached to the furniture support, and vin the means provided whereby these parts may be held in' prescribed relation upon and with relation to each other while at the same time the extent of adjustment is limited and the parts coupled together, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.

The-tread member T, consists of a, hollow f i cup-shaped single piece which is U-`shaped" internal screw thread t', for engagement with the male screw thread b2, on the lower end of the post B', and it will be noted'that the construction in this respect is materiallyY different vfrom that disclosed in the Letters Patent and application hereinbefore; recited, in which the tread member is threadedexternally for engagement with an adjusting sleeve or nut. In fact, to all intents and purposes, in the present case we have comblned the tread member and the sleeve or nut member Vin one piece and rotate the tread member directly on the post or stud member, thereby eliminating one member from the combination of parts while attaining a like function .in so far as the adjustability of the tread is concerned,-the decrease in cost of production attained by this simpler structure being an important factor in a commercial sense. v

In order to couple the tread member T, to the'post B', and provide means for clamping the tread member T, in a' desired position upon the post B, we use one or more set screws-t, laterally positioned in the neck or upperportion of the tread member T, and

When these are screwed 'inwardwith theirpoints projecting above the peripheral 4depth of the male screw t?, the upper 'convolution of which, acting as an annular shoulder 2), as before set forth, it is obvious that the two parts, the post B', and the tread member T, will be therebT coupled together,-the,annu lar shoulder b4, limiting the extent of ad justment of the ltread member downward, and the base plate B, limiting the extent of its adjustment upward. V'When the tread member T, is positioned to contact properly with the Hoor or other sustaining surface y', or screws t2, are tightened to impingrc torciblT against the contiiaoted cylindrical portion L, oi the screw post B, thereby locking' the tread 'member T, in the ascertained and prescribed portion. It will thusibe seen-that the contracted cylindrical portion L, ofthe screw post B', is an important factorin that it affords a margin of adjustability above and beyond the male screw thread b2, so that the latter is left intact and is not damaged or marred as would be the case ii the set screws t2, impinged directly thereon.

Thetread member T, is preferably formed with a peripherally roughened zone t3 for linger contact, to facilitate manipulation.

Y That we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,

l. The furniture tread herein described, comprising a base plate, means for securing the same to a furniture leg or support, a post on said base plate formed with aV screw threaded lower portion and a contracted cylindrical portion between said screw threaded portion and the basedplate, an internally threaded one ieee trea member U-shaped in longitudina cross section engaging with said threaded post, theclosed end of said tread member tact surface for the purpose set forth, and one or more set screws positioned laterally on the tread member and opposed to the reduced cylindrical portion of the said screw threaded post.

The furniture tread herein described comprising a base ilate, means fo' attachu ing the same to a furniture leg or support, a screw threaded post on said base plate, an internally-threaded tread member U-shaped in longitudinal cross section engaging with said threaded post, the closed end ot' said tread member forming a central axial contact surface for thepurpose set forth, and means for clamping the said tread member to said post. l
